Bay Area Hip Hop and The Hyphy Movement.
Being born and raised in the Bay Area I have witnessed the rise and mainstream onput and success, so to speak, of Bay Area music. The Hyphy movement. Artists like Mac Dre, E40, Messy Merv, Keak the Sneek, Federation, The Pack have become mainstream and quiet popular but a lot of people (not from the bay) I've noticed to not even consider bay music "authentic" hip hop, instead they see it as a joke. I mean, how can you blame them? When "we" (the bay area) talk about doing donuts, slideshows, popping pills, wearing vans, jumping outta cars like monkeys, riding 'yellow buses' going dumb, doing the bird, etc. Its seem a tad ridiculous right?

And everyone seems to believe the whole Bay Area is like this which is not true and YES, GHOST RIDING THE WHIP IS ILLEGAL AND PEOPLE GET TICKETS FOR DOING THAT SHIT! Lol, but back to my question at hand and I really wanna know your opinions,

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BAY AREA MUSIC?

Me, myself, I hate it. Viva la revolution!

Never really got into it, although E40 is okay. It's all just really a cultural thing, the type of music you listen to when you IN California.

Being born and raised in New Orleans (and not really travelling), when I talked to people in other cities I wondered just why bounce music (more famously Choppa as in "Choppa Style," but also DJ Jubilee, 5th Ward Weebie, etc.) never caught on. And then I moved to NYC. It just doesn't fit here. Nor does any other underground artist from N.O., that I've noticed anyway.

I don't mind the Soulja Boy and Chicken Noodle Soup songs in the radio simply because it's just music. Shit to make you move. But I just can't stand E-40 and the songs that came out last year. Whatever tickles your pickle, I guess.

And yes, the bay area music is still hip-hop to me.

I haven't heard much from the Bay other than Zion I. Never been a fan of E-40.

oh, it'll be fine. i think every region has their growing pains. i'm sure many outside of south thought screw was bullshit at first. besides, there's more to the yay than hyphy that got shine. too short. e-40, back when he was talking about slurricanes, he didn't call it hyphy then. blackalicious, lyrics born, etc.

plus, there's some value to regional flavor staying regional. i mean, i could totally understand why the dove shack didn't really blow up outside of socal.

Hyphy's still alive out here? I thought it kicked the bucket early '07.

At any rate, Bay music isn't terrible. Just the ones that suck are better marketed.

Give me Richie Cunning (straight outta' the Sucka Free) over any of the other hyphy slaps any day.

Eventhough I was raised on old-skool NYC hip-hop, I think Bay Area Hip Hop & The Hyphy Movement is just as relevant and important to Total Hip-Hop culture as Southern Snap-Rap, Hip-Pop, Horrorcore Rap (lol), Texas Screwed + Chopped et al. All of it is a part hip-hop evolution. Hip-Hop started as a single tree (roots and trunk was NYC based), but now branches are growing. Some branches become bigger (Southern Hip-Hop) than others (Hyphy). But its all the same tree and time will make some branches grow and others shrink.

I kind of look at the evolution of Hip-Hop in the same light as the evolution of Rock music. The rockers of the late 60s & early 70s did not like the electric synthesized rock sound of the late 70's & early 80's. This kind of hateration happened in Hip-Hop; only the old school hip-hoppers were NYC and the new hip-hoppers was West Coast (LA) Gangsta Rap. Regardless, I like the diversity of hip-hop (even though I cringe when I hear "Crank That Soulja Boy" is being nominated for a Grammy).

HIP HOP is all the same family... but you like some cousins better than others. :-)

While I like SOME of the songs that are supposedly hyphy("Vans", "Can I Get With You(?)", "Tell Me When To Go", you'll probably find me playing more Lyrics Born and Del than (insert Hyphy rapper's name here). I actually like E-40, but due to radio whorage, everyone's trying to sound like they're from the south, and that's irritating.
