Expensive Place Mat Alternatives
I a buying a brand new hardwood kitchen table set and am looking at place mats so I don't ruin the surface. I found these ones on crate and barrel, but I can't justify spending $50 on four place mats. Anyone have any ideas where I could find something similar for less?

Otherwise, do you know of places with modern kitchen linens/place mats? I just seem to find some old lady or really boring ones out there. I just want to make my style reflect on my table too. (I kind of go for the modern/earthy look)

Thanks in advance!!

Have you tried Bed, Bath & Beyond? They have some really cute ones that didn't look like that much.

try pier one and cost plus, and even Ikea - they have a lot of interesting styles that may fit your budget...but considering the materials in the mat, the price they are asking is too too bad...they look to last a very long time

Pier 1 often has good sales on such things.

And Overstock.com has some bamboo placemats.

(And that wooden one is really attractive, but I've dealt with smaller ones that are more like trivets/hot spots, and if you put things down on them wrong they can tip. Glasses slide. Potential disaster.)

Target sometimes has a nice selection of placemats (at least that's where I got mine, and I think they look lovely!)

I second Target - lots of styles and materials - they change frequently and fit every budget.

Third, I've actually seen some really similar mats there.

If you like craft projects you might consider making your own. Really nice placemats have cork backing to keep them on the table and protect the surface. You can buy this, it is used to make bulletin boards. Then you get some plywood or MDF cut to the size you want. You can decopage and seal the top or if it is nice plywood you can stain and finish it. Another option with plywood is wood burning. My grandmother had a set like this with a little wood trim around the outside that was older then I was, but was so coated in urethane that it still looked good.

if you have access to a sewing machine and an iron, it's pretty easy to make your own.

I had some gorgeous fabric I couldn't part with and I made some, it was pretty easy. I used flannel as the backing and sprayed with scotchguard

just an idea :)

I tend to find them all-over. Go to any home store (or store that sells kitchen furnishing, for instance The Real Canadian Superstore here in Ontario sells lots of kitchen accessories) and start browsing. I know that I saw some similar wood ones like those at Ikea last time I was there.

Don't forget that Bed Bath Beyond has regular coupons that never expire.

Also, Linens and Things is having their going out of business sales still, I think.

Check places like Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx- I've found some great ones there for MUCH cheaper than I would have bought them elsewhere. And since the stock their changes regularly if they don't have something you like now, they may have it in a week or two.

Pier One and World Market have awesome choices. The selection at World Market is quite large and they have several like that. Additionally they are all on the year end clearance for 50% right now at my local store.
