What is your favorite barbecue sauce? I am looking for a change in my barbecue, because it seems like every kind I get tastes exactly the same. Perhaps something a bit sweeter? Perhaps something with a kick to it?

I agree wholeheartedly - KC Masterpiece makes a variety of great sauces, and their marinades are great too. It's a nice sweet/tangy/carmel-y flavor.

you can make your own -
generally you start with a ketchup base, to which you add liquid smoke, soy sauce, various spices, vinegar, honey, molasses, various oils and whatever else you have hanging around that you want to try out.
For sweetening, try brown sugar, molasses, dark corn syrup and honey.

When you say "more of a kick" I am going to guess that you mean spicer. Knowing about the diferent "heats" that diferent peppers give is obviously a plus here, but don't forget about the other "hot" spices, like cinnamon.

Here is "barbaque" type sauce that I really like:
Curry barbaque sauce
4 c ketchup
1 tbsp tumeric
2 tbsp cumin
3 tbsp corriander
1 tsp cinnamon
2 cloves minced garlic (1 tbsp?)
1 tsp liquid smoke
Sambal or other chilli paste, to taste
canola oil
sesame seed oil

Coat the bottom of a skillet with canola oil, using slightly more than you think that you will need. Place over medium high heat. When oil is heated (it should NOT be smoking) add the tumeric, cumin and corriander. Add more oil if spices absorb it all, but there shouldn't be pools of oil without spices. When the spices are a nice, nut brown (7 to 10 mins) add the garlic. Remove from heat when the garlic begins to brown, possibly less than 1 minute.

Stir the spice mixture into the ketchup, add liquid smoke and chilli paste (to make it spicy) finish with just enough sesamie oil to let the flavor come through.

My favorite is a bottle I bought from a guy during a street fair here in Portland: Ghetto Gourmet! Nice and sweet with tamarind in it.

I know, that's totally not helpful, but sometimes local, unique products are the best.

Being a KC native transplanted to California, I'm always hankering for good BBQ sauces, although I end up mail ordering more then I get at the store. I'm a KC Masterpiece fan, especially the spicier flavors. There's also a KC local brand called Arthur Bryants that is really good. I like their Bold and Spicy better then the regular (the regular is a little more Memphis style, with lots of black pepper flavor). Some off brand "KC style" are too sweet for me though (ilke the Trader joe's version.. too sweet!) HTH!

I don't know if they're available where you are, but I love HP's sauces. Their BBQ flavour is delicious, but they also do several other sauces - there's a fruity one which is yummy, and has a certain barbecue feeling to it, too :)
