The Darling Downs - How Can I Forget This Heart of Mine
THE DARLING DOWNS
How Can I Forget This Heart of Mine
(Carrot Top)
Singer Ron Peno fronts moody rock/pop fixture Died Pretty, while guitarist Kim Salmon has a long underground rock career ranging from the Scientists to the Beasts of Bourbon to his eclectic solo career. Put these two Australian music icons together and you get the Darling Downs, an acoustic country/folk duo with few artistic ties to anything either man has done before. Peno's keening voice lifts the often dour material away from its earthbound origins, while Salmon's back-to-basics guitar work wrangles it back down from the sky. It's that tension that gives "Still Falls the Rain," "And They Danced" and "Why Did She Leave?" their tangy poignancy. How Can I Forget This Heart of Mine isn't an easy listen, despite its low-key ambience, but it is a worthy one. Michael Toland
