M2K: Why I don't ask people to write at the site
This was a personal entry to [info]dewheatley, but Jason asked if I'd mind cross-posting to the Heroes LJ. I don't mind at all, though I kind of like the irony of the first sentence... - David, EiC of M2K

I've said this before and I will say it again. I don't believe in inviting people to write for a site. I prefer the writers who say 'I'm thinking of writing at the site' because they've chosen to be there. A writer at any fanfic site should do it because they want to write there and not feel like they're doing someone a favour. Maybe we miss out on the fanfic 'names' but I'd rather have not have them if they're going to mess us about.

The worst kick any group can get is 'I only wrote it as a favour to X' because it says that a) they didn't really want to write for the group in the first place and b) you've no guarentee they'll stick around. You've not got that with any writer but there's more chance of them leaving if X does. The sad thing is these are talented people and it's good to have their work on site, but if they leave midway through a storyline then they more often than not don't want their work continued and ask for it to be removed. Frankly it pisses me off, because it looks like you had no real commitment to the site in the first place. It really gets to me because they've wasted everyone's time - readers, fellow writers, site managers and themselves. Themselves I don't mind as much, they're entitled but to do that to the others just isn't on.

That's why I introduced the rule the first time round that I'd take stuff down at my discretion, the one that cause that big row between myself and Derrick. I've not changed my stance on that in anyway, and while I appreciate that RL gets in the way, at least have the courtesy to tidy things up so someone else can have a go. I do get asked to do things for sites and if I do it's because I think I can contribute something to the site itself and not because being asked is cool. I'll see what I'm doing through to the end. Matt Pierce has asked me to think about Artifice, I've had Frontier mentioned to me as well. I'd like to eventually but I've not had an idea enough to make work so as yet it's a polite 'maybe later'.

I'm trying to be a different EiC at M2K to the one I was before and not get so confrontational with people but when things come out like that... I'm not happy about it.

I can see both sides of the argument. I get what you're saying when you say you don't want someone who's only writing as a favor to someone else. However, sometimes giving a person a suggestion of writing something for a site could make some gears turn in their head that they wouldn't have considered in the past.

I would never in a million years have considered writing IRON MAN. But because Chris suggested it to me, I began thinking about it, and I came up with a lot of ideas. All from just one suggestion. Derrick once did something similar when he told me he's waiting to see me write something for Frontier. At first I told him, "thanks, but it's not really my thing." And now, I've sent three chapters for Exner to edit. Another example is on the HEROES list when I mentioned that Nightwing is one of my favorite DC characters and sometime in the future, I might like to write him. Curt e-mailed me and told me to send him a proposal, and now I'm gonna be writing NIGHTWING.

So basically, what I'm getting at is there are pros and cons to both sides of this argument. Sure, you sometimes get the, "I'm only writing here because so and so is, and now that he's gone, so am I" (hell, that happened with my X-FACTOR proposal at M2K).

I can understand that. That's how I got in to the game - Matt Pierce asked me if I was interested in writing a Captain Britain series, and put the idea in my head. I didn't, but ended up with X-Men 2099 instead.

The same thing happened again with Barry Reese asking about Pendragons and if I'd write there. I said I'd think about it, because I'd read things before there and because of what was being done I had no ideas, until I got the idea of a crossover, which sparked Dragon's Claws and I'm having a great time.

Yes, I'm doing it because Barry initally asked me, which is well and good, but I'm not doing it just because of that. I feel what I'm doing fits with the site as a whole, and while the odds of Barry leaving his site are remote, I'd stick around if he did because I like writing DC and I'll keep going until I either run out of ideas or I need something new.

The suggestions are how people expand their horizons, I know that, and it's great and walking away from things will happen at some point. I won't stop anyone from leaving, but if you can finish the storyline please do so, and at the very least don't have the issues taken down, because that gives a very bad impression of the site you're at. It may well be the wrong impression to have, but it's the impression you get all the same especially if it is widely known you were writing as a favour.

I've never said my issues should be taken down. When I had to leave GHOST RIDER at Marvel Anthology because of time constraints, I said to the editors there, "my stuff has no effect on continuity, so if you guys want to make it easier on new writers who may want to prop the series, go ahead and remove my issues."

If I ever decide to continue a series I left somewhere else, I won't ask that the issues be taken down -- they'll just be up at two different sites (a la ULTIMATE X-MEN).

actually I like this stance. I try my best not to get into the position where I'll actually agree to writing something as a favor. That causes me to come up with an idea I didn't do so naturally and my passion would not be there. And this whole 'favors' thing usually doesn't run with me.

usually when I get asked by a friend to write something.. my first response is 'I will think it over' what this means.. is if I have an idea for a character style that fits the site I'll go to them first. However this 9 times out of 10, will not take. cause I will not come up with an idea for a site. I get sort of peeved when i get asked multiple times... its definatly a problem, when people continue to ask you. Once is okay... more than that.. really is gonna make me never write at a site.

I wish that more people would not invite. Yeah starting sites need writers, but part of me wonders why sites can't function without this. I'd assume its cause most comic fan fiction sites tend to be marvel (insert cut off date here) and they are roughly all the same.

I suppose thats why I did my one tentiture on a marvel site cut off date site and that was that.

As to the 'tidy up stuff'

I think that JLU2001 is a good example of why people need to work on this better. Most of the open titles there have always tended be in such a mess.. best example is Aquaman there.. and Puffy Anderson deserves props for diving into that one..

I'm not sure the hows or the whys of why stories get left in bad positions. I suppose I'm one of the few pre-planning types who writes stories in advance, and like wise I can actually end in good places. Which came into effect when I decided to leave fiction for a while to cover my move I go in about a week. I'm proud to say that there is nothing on h4h, The Titans, or Green Arrow that will stop anyone from continuing the work.

I know that things happen and heck its only 'fan fiction' and people get burned out and stuff. but if I ever had one singular gripe about comic fan fiction.. it'd be the clean-up needed to continue titles on most sites.
