Summary: Megan and Lizzie arrive in Washington, where they will try to capture Sylar.

So here they were: Washington DC. Megan put on her sunglasses as she watched the pilot and co-pilot unload the few bags Lizzie and her had brought. This was one plane flight she wouldn't soon forget. Talking to Lizzie was strange, but mostly in a good way; she just knew things about Megan that she didn't even know herself. Megan knew it was the empathy but she'd had enough experience with that ability by now to no longer be spooked by it. Unless pulled that projection thing again of course, that was probably lethal if gone through long enough.

Megan liked Lizzie, the woman's strength after all she'd been through would amaze anyone. But now that they were there, and the prospect of meeting Gabriel was closing in, Megan couldn't help but worry (or at least her own definition of the term). What if Lizzie couldn't cut it? What if she couldn't cut it? What if Sylar was too powerful for either of them? There were so many insecurities that it made Megan uneasy to think of all the possible outcomes. For someone that didn't feel any emotions, her heart had been racing for a while now.

"So how are we going to get this thing going?" she asked Lizzie when she got into the car. Megan started the car and drove off, "Are you going to call him?"

Lizzie bit her lip and watched Megan put on her sunglasses. So, here they were. Her heart was racing in anticipation of what to come. She noticed her hand were shaking; Lizzie immediately hit them in her pockets. Sighing, she recalled the numbness she acquired from Megan and enjoyed the silence in her head and in her soul once more, until her heartbeat got back to normal.

She was glad she was no more freaked out by Megan’s power. She liked the girl. But what would happen when the two of them and Gabriel – Sylar – would meet was impossible to tell. Megan’s power could give her the strength to take Sylar out once and for all. But would she do that once she was face to face with Sylar? Would she find the courage to end a life, even if it belonged to a killer, to Rafe’s killer?

"So how are we going to get this thing going? Are you going to call him?"

Elizabeth almost jumped in surprise. She was so lost in her thoughts she didn't realize Megan was talking to her.

“This is the only way," she answered quietly.

She let the numbness go, and recalled all the positive sensation she could think of. She had to sound calm, cheerful… in a word, herself. He didn’t have to suspect a thing. She took a long breath, and then she took her mobile out of her purse.
“Here we go,” she said, dialing his number. She inadvertently smile when she heard the voicemail.

“Hi, Gabriel… It’ me, Lizzie. Would you please change your voicemail message? I know it by heart now. Anyway… the school called me today. One of the teachers called in sick, so I have to cover for her... and attend a seminary in Washington D. C. What a coincidence, don’t you think? I’ve just landed… so… why don’t we see each other for a drink, or a chat, or whatever? Call me. Bye!”

Another deep breath, and Lizzie ended the call.

“He'll call me back. He always does. We just have to...”

The phone started ringing before Elizabeth could finish her sentence.

"Hope you won't leave me alone on this one. What do I have to tell him?"

They had only been driving a few minutes when Lizzie picked up her cellphone and dialled Gabriel's number, a number Megan didn't even have. Why had she never looked for contact when she got out of Cresthill? Oh right, she wanted to get away from everything and everyone she knew, so she could start over with her faked emotions. And had Gabriel been destroyed by that? Was it her and Lizzie's fault that he had turned out this way?

The call was made before Megan even knew what was going on. Not that she minded, the sooner they got to Sylar the quicker she could go home and forget any of this ever happened. But then Lizzie's phone rang, and it could only be one person. Sylar.

"I'm here Lizzie, if you need to just focus on my power. He'll most likely know there's someone else in the car with you through his superhearing," Megan said, but found nothing to explain her presence to Gabriel, "But he might know I'm a model now, so if he asks about me, tell him I'm here for a photoshoot."

Elizabeth relaxed against the seat and smiled to Megan.
"Thanks for the offer, Megan. I'll keep that in mind."
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and answered the call.

"Hi," Elizabeth said.

"Lizzie," replied Sylar. "Are you really here? It's more than a coincidence. It's fate.

"Whatever, Gabriel. So, what do you think? Do you have time for me? Cause I do. Lunch break. What do you think?"

"Who's in the car with you? You're not driving. And you hates cabs."
He was getting suspicious. Elizabeth's eyes flashed open. Superhearing, right.
She gave a nervous glance at Megan and then she opted for a very risky move.

"You would never guess. But since you talked about coincindences and fate... maybe you want to say hello to Megan, too."
He was surprised. He was wondering what reason on earth could bring Lizzie and Megan together. Lizzie smiled.

"You know, we couldn't believe our luck that day... How many chances are there? The best friend and the girlfriend getting to know each other, Gabriel. Am I wrong or it's a guy's worst nightmare?"
Come on, pick the bait...

"You're evil. I might have to stop you."

"So you've time for me... for us, after all?"

"I have to find it."

"Good to hear."

"I have to finish a thing, but after that I have the rest of the day free. Lunch sounds great. Any ideas?"

It was little more than a flash, but was enough to Elizabeth to understand they have no reason to rush anymore.

"Meet us in our hotel hall," she said, trying to keep her voice as steady as possible. "We're at hotel Babylon."

"Well, bye Liz... and say hello to Megan for me. I can't wait to see you," and he ended the call.

She closed her phone and looked at Megan, chocking back tears.

"He's already killed his victim. Minutes before the call. Megan, we have to stop him."

Megan's eyes went wide when Lizzie told her the news. They were too late? Dammit! And they had been so fast to get on his trail. Megan took a deep breath and put her hand on Lizzie's, not because she cared, but she thought it might help Lizzie deal with her emotions better. Megan couldn't imagine what it must feel like to get inside the head of a serial killer.

"We'll get him Lizzie," Megan said assured, and meant it with every fibre of her being, "He's going to pay for all the things he's done."

Elizabeth covered Megan's hand with hers and once again she lost herself in her numbness. She was good at mimicking that feeling, but like for many things in life there was absolutely nothing like the real thing. It was scary how faster she had developed a sort of dependance from that power...
Lizzie took a deep breath and then she let Megan's hand go, leaning on the seat.
"Thank you" Lizzie whispered.
"Listen... You made yourself clear on the plane, but I still think I should meet him alone at first. He knows me enough to think I could never represent a menace to him. And from what I understand he doesn't have any power that might influence mine. I could make a good bait..."

"Bait?!" Megan almost shouted, her heart beating faster in her chest, only because Lizzie's hand had been on hers mere second ago. She pulled the car up to the curb and looked Lizzie hard in the eyes, "Are you crazy?"

"You said yourself this is not Gabriel anymore. Sylar is a killer Lizzie, and if he finds out you have a power, he will take it. Friend or not. History or not. There is no way in hell that you are facing him alone!" Megan ranted, something entirely new to her, "If anyone should even consider going alone, it should be me and I don't even know if that is a good idea."

Megan missed the point, in Lizzie's opinion.
"I know he's gone. Don't think I'm suicidal or something... I'm not. If I say I can do something, it means I can. People don't keep the guard up with me around... I'm just a tiny blonde girl after all, where's the danger?" she said, with a calm, serious tone. "This is what usually makes messing up with their heads a lot easier."
Lizzie smiled for a second, than she bit her lip. "No one knows about what I'm about to tell you, ok? If Peter ever discovered this he would lock me up in his basement forever, overprotective like he is."

She sighed. "I've been assaluted by two men in the subway, the week before we met."
There, she said it.
Elizabeth chased away the awful memory of those guys and their knives that tried to rob her on her way back home from the university, and focused on the better part of that bad adventure. That was the first time she experienced projection.

"I had a knife pointed at my throat but I convinced them not to kill me. After I was done with them they even apologized to me. Still thinking I'm going to be the sacrifical lamb?"

Megan sighed heavily and took a deep breath, ordering her thoughts in the process. Lizzie was being so blatantly honest with her that it almost made her feel sorry for what she was about to say. Megan knew that she could come across hard and decisive, but she felt that Lizzie needed it right now.

"I'm not talking about robbers or someone out to assault you," she said dryly, "and I'm sorry if I sound heartless here, but you need to understand one thing. Sylar is the most powerful person on this planet right next to Peter. He has acquired so many powers and his DNA has undergone so many changes that no-one can predict how he will react."

"There was a girl at the Company, Eden McCain, she had the power of persuasion. And she ended up killing herself so Sylar wouldn't be able to take her power."

"Do you understand what I'm saying to you Lizzie? There is no way to be certain whether your power will work on him."

I seemed heartless and almost sounded like she didn't care, but Megan needed Lizzie to know how much this man wasn't Gabriel Gray anymore.

Lizzie sighed again. She was so used to have her way with everyone that she had almost forgotten how it was like to receive a negative answer. The truth was she couldn't manipulate Megan in any way. It was like she was kind of blind when she was with her, used as she was to rely on her empathy to understand the world and the people in it.
When that mission would be over, she would to whatever in her power to keep Megan in her orbit. Being friends with that girl could reveal to be healthy for her, somehow.

"As you wish. I recognize a battle I can't win," Lizzie said, looking straight in front of her. "We better move. We don't have much time."

How could she explain the burning need for closure she was feeling right now? Before Megan entered her life, Sylar was a killer and Gabriel her friend. Now they were the same person. She could feel the dark feelings she had always kept at bay slowly rising inside of her. Hate, rage, frustration, desire to inflict pain. She had to thank Sylar for that.

Before connecting with his mind, those feelings were almost non-existent in her. she would think how to tame them later. As of this moment, Elizabeth just wanted them to grow. When the masks would come off, she would be ready to face him.
