3 tutorials by request. I didn’t save the .PSD file for any of these, so they might not come out the same as my originals.
How to make
to
Tutorial 1
This is a very simple icon, very easy to make. First get your image, I got a cap from Harry Potter GoF, cropped it and got my base.

Sharpen your image twice. Duplicate it and set it to Soft Light

Take this mask

Copy it onto your icon and then set it to Screen.

Now you’re done, very simple icon.
Tutorial 2
How to make
to
This icon is a bit more difficult, but it is still quite simple. First choose your image, I chose a screencap from the Yule Ball.

I cropped out Hermione, and got my base.

Now Sharpen your image, Duplicate it and then set on Screen.

Now for some colour, Merge all your layers together (Ctrl + E) and then go to Image > Adjustments > Variations. I don’t think this can be done on PSP or older versions of Photoshop.
Now colour your picture by clicking on what you think looks good with your icon. I clicked More Blue and More Yellow. Once you have a colour you’re happy with, click ok.

After that, I just smoothed out her skin a bit with the blur tool. Doesn’t have to be perfect.

Now take this mask

and set it on Screen

Copy this little pattern

and then paste it on your icon

Then add some text, I used the font Trajan Pro to write “Tears”, and then used some tiny text underneath it. I then rotated the text by going to Edit > Transform> Rotate 90 CW. Here is the image if anyone wants it.

Ok so now for the final part. Go to Layer >New fill layer > Gradient and then set to Screen like below.

Now choose the colour you want your icon to be filled with.

Click ok once you have a colour you’re happy with, then you’re done!

Tutorial 3
How to make this banner

Using Photoshop CS2, easily translatable to other versions and programs.
This will be explained pretty briefly because it is almost the same as the icon tutorial above. We are going to make this banner

Make a blank canvas, 400x200 and paste an image on the right hand side like this

Take this mask

And set it on Screen

Get another image, and paste it closer to the left side

Take this mask

Copy the mask and paste it on the image you have just copied, set it on screen

Take this pattern

And paste it near the right image

Copy this image, it’s just the brushes I used, but I can’t remember which brush file it was. Paste it on the right side, but cut out the part in the middle where the other image is.

Add some text, I used the font Trajan Pro to write “Ron Weasley” Use a grey colour for the text.

Once you’ve done that, you can add the colour on now. Go to Layers > New fill layer > Gradient, put it on screen

Choose the colour that would suit your blend, then click ok.

This part is optional, I just added a white border around the banner.

Some other banners I have made following the same techniques

Hope the tutorials are useful, I would love to see what you come up with =) Please don’t copy these tutorials, they did take a while to write out. Masks are by
