Exercise a Chore? Not Anymore! [22 Aug 2008|07:18am]

sophia_speaks
[ mood | bouncy ]

I, personally love working out. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE! Many of my friends and people I know, however, do not. Some do view it as a chore, with our busy lives and hectice schedules, adding exercise on your already mile long to do list, just seems like yet one more thing to do. We know we have to do it, for our physical as well as our mental health. It reduces stress, it slows down the aging process, and releases those feel good natural body chemicals into our system.

One of my friends LOVES her Jazzercise class, because it is fun, she likes the instructor, and the instructor incorporates different types of exercise to make it fun, like yoga, strength training. My friend looks 20+ years younger as well. SIGN ME UP, right lol

Well, these are 5 ideas I use to keep exercise fun and rewarding. I have found that by incorporating just these 2 elements that it increases the likelihood of success with any program/exercise/activity you decide to try and keeps you moving.

http://buzz.prevention.com/community/sofiah/exercise-a-chore-no-more

Enjoy! I would love to hear what you do to keep working out and if exercise was once a chore how you changed it around so it is not ANYMORE!

Diet Analysis Plus (Vista compatible) [08 Aug 2008|12:09pm]

Some were still having trouble downloading Diet Analysis Plus from the previous link (megaupload). Please make sure that you are logged into an account with administrator control to add programs on your computer.

For convenience I uploaded it to another site that should be rather straight forward.

G'luck, and lemme know if you need any help guys!

Seriously, you'll like this. [07 Aug 2008|09:21pm]

vigelunt
I just finished taking a Science of Nutrition course. Aside from it being a useful class, they gave us this program called Diet Analysis Plus. It has a database of almost every food, with all macronutrients listed: Carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. And of course, it logs calories.

For anyone on a diet, knows someone who wants to evaluate their diet, or just see what the culprit is from getting their "washboard abs" I recommend this program.

Uploaded for your fun. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YMHM2J6S

Let me know if you like it/want some of your results interpreted. Just go to "make a profile" and skip the "register student" part. Seriously, this thing has to be as affective as weight watchers or at least a damn good supplement.

Based on your anthropometric data it will let you know exactly how many kcalories/macronutrients you need to sustain your current weight. If you plan on dieting just rememember not to go below 1200 calories a day. Otherwise your metabolism just makes you burn less calories.

Just unzip the file once downloaded and click the setup.exe file. Enjoy:)

Protip: Click view profile once entered and look at the following:
Macronutrient Ranges

Fat Breakdown

Intake vs. Goals (highly recommend)

BTW, your body produces all of the needed saturated fat (and forget about trans fat). You don't need to worry about getting that at 100% obviously. The lower the better, just be concerned if you exceed it.

*EDIT*: Some were confused on how to download once the link was open. You have to enter in the three letters at the top (a captcha) and hit enter. After that there will be a 45 second wait until you can click "free download."

Can you make your own tonic water?? [05 Aug 2008|11:28am]

diane3699
[ mood | giddy ]

I have found a wonderful recipe sent  to me from one of my customers on how to make tonic water from Quinine all natural Amazon bark plant.  Let me share it with you!

The problem with homemade tonic water has always been a flavor profile that was too esoteric for the general audience. This recipe takes some of the positive qualities people have come to understand from commercial tonic water and updated them with fresh ingredients.

4 cups water
1 cup chopped lemongrass (roughly one large stalk)
¼ cup powdered cinchona bark (
quinine powder)
zest and juice of 1 orange
zest and juice of 1 lemon
zest and juice of 1 lime
1 tsp whole allspice berries
¼ cup citric acid
¼ tsp Kosher salt

Combine ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Once mixture starts to boil, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

Remove from heat and strain out solids using a strainer or chinois. You’ll need to fine-strain the mixture, as it still contains quite a bit of the cinchona bark. You can use a coffee filter and wait for an hour or more, or do as I do and run the whole mixture through a French coffee press.

Once you’re satisfied with the clarity of your mix, heat it back up on the stovetop or microwave, and then add ¾ cup of agave syrup to each cup of your hot mix. Stir until combined, and store in the attractive bottle of your choice.

You now have a syrup that you can carbonate with seltzer water; I use my iSi soda siphon for some nicely-textured bubbles. To assemble a gin and tonic, use ¾ ounce of syrup, 1½ ounces of gin and 2 ounces of soda water over ice.

Let me know how it works for you and enjoy!

Create Your Own Permanent Acne Cure [16 Jul 2008|09:44pm]
urikes1983

Vitamin B5 also known as pantothenic acid is a commonly used vitamin to treat acne. It become widely popular after Dr. Leung a Hong Kong acne expert published a paper on its effectiveness. His paper was based on the theory that acne sufferers are deficient in vitamin B. The result is excess sebum production, the root cause of clogged hair follicles leading to acne.

Even touching the face can worsen acne. Without realizing it, most of us touch our faces many times throughout the day. The problem is that our hands contain oils and bacteria that will increase the acne symptoms. In fact, all objects, including eyeglasses and telephone handsets, that make contact with the face must be clean. Hair, particularly long hair, also touches your face, so it is important to keep your hair clean and oil free. Fabric accessories such as hats and headbands should be avoided or used as little as possible.

The most common form of acne is known as "acne vulgaris", which means common acne. Excessive secretion of oils from the glands combines with naturally occurring dead skin cells to block the hair follicles. Oil secretions build up beneath the blocked pore, providing a perfect environment for the skin bacteria Propioni bacterium acne to multiply uncontrolled. In response, the skin inflames, producing the visible lesion. The face, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms are especially affected. The typical acne lesions are comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and inflammatory cysts. These are the more inflamed forms of pus-filled or reddish bumps, even boil-like tender swellings. Non-inflamed 'sebaceous cysts', more properly called epidermoid cysts, occur either in association with acne or alone but are not a constant feature.

Acne affects, according to some, up to 95% if teenagers at some time in their teen or early adult years. It can be serious and debilitating, mild and easy to control, or usually somewhere in between. The market for acne cures is huge, billions of dollars.

There are many moisturizers available that are specifically designed to help with acne such as Cetaphil, Eucerin, and Neutrogena. Severe acne, or acne that has not responded well to over the counter products, can be successfully treated with the knowledge and expertise of a dermatologist. A dermatologist will consider many things before suggesting treatment. He will perform a thorough evaluation of the patient, considering things such as severity of acne, patient age, lifestyle, and co-existing conditions. The dermatologist then may suggest a combination of two or three different therapies for best treatment.

Hormones (or a lack of them) during later years - especially for women - can play a role in acne flare-ups and prevention. One recent study showed that about 50 percent of women have acne, referred to as hormonal acne, problems during the week before their menstruation. Treatment options include topical retinoids, oral antibiotics and Benzoyl Peroxide for teen years. For adults oral contraceptives or hormonal birth control pills and hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) may be helpful for women, combined with systemic or topical treatments, prescription or over-the-counter products and medications.

Breakfast question [06 Jul 2008|07:58pm]

williamblair
I'm trying to live a much healthier lifestyle and the best place I can think of starting with is what I'm eating. I usually don't eat breakfast but I would like to start and was wondering if this was a healthy breakfast I could try to incorporate into my life daily. Or maybe some kind of variation of it if you have any ideas.

1 hard boiled egg, half a bagel with a light spread of light cream cheese, some type of fruit (probably banana for potassium but depends on what I feel like that day), 1 glass of pomegranate juice.

Is that good? Is there anything I should add or anything I should substitute with something else?

hi everyone, I'm new here. I've been going on the exercise bike every day now for a few months, for about half an hour or more (but less if I;m feeling lazy). I;m trying to tone up, lose some fat ,etc, etc, but I;m wondering whether I should be getting more variety into the workout for it be effective. I've seen hardly any change in my appearance...should I be doing things other than cycling as well? If so, what are some good exercises that I can do without expensive gym equipment?

[ mood | blah ]

hi everyone, im new, ive been trying to lose weight for a couple years now, but never successful. my diet varies, sometimes im good, but other days i stuff my face with sweets. i recently gained about 6 lbs just by being on vacation in Mexico (darn cold beers and seafood!), i want to get under 150, thats my first goal. meaning i only have 8 lbs to go. doesnt sound like much, but i havent been under 150 in over 4 yrs. i just keep yo-yo-ing.

whats different this time? im actually back at the gym more consistently. so far ive been doing spinning twice a week, and cardio/weight class about 1-2 times a week. im buying healthier snacks, and my main goal, look great for my 2nd upcoming trip to Europe. (last time i was chubby, so i hardly show the pictures)

my BIGGEST change this time. add more fat burning walking! yes, walking thats right.

famness
Hello. This is my first time posting here. I have a few questions~

I am pretty thin, but I really need to tone. My stomach is getting fat and my legs are really really flabby. It also appears that I am getting a double chin. What exercises can I do to help with this?

I have an exercise ball, what are some things that I can do on it?

What are some proper healthy meals? Recipes or anything, please? I always feel so lazy, a friend told me maybe it's because I don't eat properly. Which is probably true. I normally only eat supper, and I don't get the proper amounts of everything the body needs.

I have three little sisters, two of them are very overweight. Ages 9 and 12. The 12 year old weighs 160 pounds. What is a good diet for children of such an age? Of course it's really hard to get them to eat proper dieting foods and all. They're just kids and they love their junk food. They do go outside to play alot, running around and all. So it must be the foods they eat?

Any vitamins, maybe? For me and/or my sisters, that could help..?

I hope this is the proper place to ask all of this...

I would really appreciate any help I can get with all of this. Thanks so much in advance. ♥

Cystic Fibrosis Causes Symptoms Information with Treatment [08 Jun 2008|03:00am]
lasto_boy124

The life expectation for people with cystic fibrosis has been steadily increasing over the past 40 years. Some people with CF have serious lung and digestive problems. Other people have more mild disease that doesn't show up until they are adolescents or young adults. CF is caused by a mutation in a gene called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Respiratory failure is the most dangerous consequence of cystic fibrosis. Also, the secretions block pancreatic enzymes that help digest fats and proteins, and they prevent your body from absorbing key vitamins. Treatments for cystic fibrosis are aimed at relieving symptoms and complications.

Causes of Cystic Fibrosis

The common Causes of Cystic Fibrosis :

Cystic fibrosis affects the mucus and sweat glands of the body and is caused by a defective gene .

Other bacteria may be involved.

Radiation, eg after radiotherapy to other organs in the pelvis.

The main cause of cystitis fibrosis (and other urinary tract infections) is bacteria known as coliform bacteria, which are a common occupant of the bowel.

Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis

Some Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis :

Weight loss, or failure to gain weight normally in childhood .

Coughing or wheezing.

Fatigue.

Infants may have salty-tasting skin.

Recurrent respiratory infections, such as pneumonia or sinusitis.

Stools that are pale or clay colored , foul smelling, or that float.

Diarrhea.

Delayed growth .

Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis

Antibiotics for respiratory infections.

Vitamin supplements, especially vitamins A, D, E, and K.

DNAse enzyme replacement therapy. The medication dornase (Pulmozyme) contains an enzyme that thins the mucus and makes it easier to cough up.

Postural drainage and chest percussion .

Lung transplant may be considered in some cases.

Pancreatic enzymes to replace those that are missing.

Research has shown that the pain reliever ibuprofen may slow lung deterioration in some children with cystic fibrosis. The results were most dramatic in children ages 5 to 13.

Question [17 May 2008|11:50pm]

taelo
So I did this real intense core work in a martial arts lesson I went to. I did high impact sit-ups and such. Ever since then (this was 2 days ago) my abs and upper chest have started to hurt a lot. I do a lot of backbends on my yoga ball to stretch it out, but I have read that muscle soreness is a result of the muscles tearing and not of lactic acid so stretching doesn't help. My real question is should I continue to do sit-ups and such, or let my body heal a bit first? I want my body to be ready for the next martial arts lesson I attend.
