Once Upon a Time in the North, anyone?
I pre-ordered the book and finished it in a few hours on Tuesday. It's not surprising considering it is a very compact book (I haven't read Lyra's Oxford yet so I didn't expect the book to be the size it was) but it was so engrossing I probably would have stayed up to finish it. I had planned to write about it Wednesday but I got sick. I'm proud Once Upon a Time in the North was manufactured in Malaysia. :D It's a beautifully made book and I do think if I had a choice between a paperback version or the hardcover version, I would still choose the hardcover one, though it would be more expensive. There's also a boardgame included, where aeronauts compete to be the last remaining one in the sky. I haven't played it yet (they say the minimum is four players) as I and my friends have been too busy, but some of the "Hazards" are pretty amusing.

The political intrigue was interesting to consider, as Lee landed on Novy Odense which just discovered oil.  A candidate for mayor - Ivan Dimitrovich Poliakov - campaigns on anti-bear sentiment, but it's really just a front  for a big oil  company. Ah, what makes the world turns round.

As part of Iorek's background is related in His Dark Materials trilogy, I do like how this focuses more on Lee and parts of his life prior to Novy Odense and Lyra. It has been a while since I read the second and third book of HDM, but I think Once Upon a Time in the North has a lot more fabrications made by Lee in order to get out of things, and humor between him and Hester. (We find out Iorek tells them Hester is an arctic hare while she thought she was a "damn jackrabbit!" I laughed out loud at that part.)

Since HDM was set on the blooming of puberty and sexual feelings for Lyra and Will, whereas Lee's already in full blossom, so this book seemed a little more geared towards readers who know what sex is and how casual it can be between humans. There are no actual sex scenes in this book, but Lee's yearning when he meets some women is pretty obvious. There are also a lot more guns in book (I personally don't like them) so the climax is a bit violent, depending on people's tolerance.

I really adored this book and I'm glad Pullman wrote it. I hope he writes one for Serafina one day.

Avoided the spoilers, as I haven't gotten to read the book yet, but I agree that this (like Lyra's Oxford before it) is a gorgeous-looking book. As of now, there are plans for one more miniature-sized book, which will be about Will. It will have a green cover to go with Lyra's red and Lee and Iorek's blue. Other than that, I don't think there's anything slated except Book of Dust, though I agree, a Serafina book would be a great idea. I'm sure there are plenty of exciting stories to tell about her, and I'd definitely like to learn more about the witches' culture, for which a book like this would provide a great opportunity. This seems like such a great format for exploring some of the interesting corners of his world there was never room for in the series proper.

Ah, thank you for clearing up a question I had. A reviewer commented that this was the "little green book" to accompany Lyra's "red" book so I was thinking I was color-blind. (I've had arguments with people before about colors.)

Yes, I'm interested in knowing more about the witches' culture, too. I wonder if he did write one if it would be about how she met her former lover (I can't recall his name) or from when she was young in witches' terms.

I happened by it while looking around on amazon; I thought I'd somehow managed to miss its publication, but after I ordered it and it turned up, I found out I'd gotten it something like the day before.:D

My only real complaint is that from what I heard about it, I was expecting more from Iorek in it, and he seemed to be relegated to the last quarter or so. Otherwise I really enjoyed it, particularly the arctic hare part and how the rifle Lee's given is the same one he has years later.

I'm just curious how old the bears live, since both Lee and Iorek are young in this, and the trilogy takes place some time later.

Yes, it was neat to find out Lee didn't also have that rifle with him.

Yeah, the bears would be an interesting topic to cover.
