Happy H/D Holidays, ms_mindfunk!
Author: [info]kestrelsparhawk
Recipient: [info]ms_mindfunk
Title: Squib
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco (implied Ginny/Other, Hr/RW, Other/Other)
Summary: Harry has a respectable life: devoted to his family, teacher to the least-talented of the Wizarding community, retired hero. The Prophet hasn’t caught on to a few things, such as the fact that Harry is gay. He and Ginny want to keep it that way. It’s not a great life, but it’s his – until one day, an old school rival comes by to investigate his class. Suddenly, Harry’s life is no longer predictable.
Rating: NC-18, maybe.
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): None, really, except m/m sex and children who ran off with the plot.
Deathly Hallows compliant?Yes, including epilogue, but only written canon.
Word Count: +/- 52,000
Author's Notes: I tried to put in everything you asked for, [info]ms_mindfunk, most particularly H/D as parents and a long, plotty story. It’s the length that got me into trouble – I very much fear I have earned the criticisms you made of DH! I played safe and stayed with canon. But there is a mystery, Harry as teacher and parent, Draco not a superQueen (or any kind). And kids. Who stole the plot, sorry. The prompts were a real, real challenge, especially with the mystery, so I sort of . . . er, finessed that part, and you got only the flowers. Obscene amounts of thanks to my betas, S & N, particularly S, who really deserves partial credit for much of the story. Thanks also to the mods for all their work. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [info]nqdonne.

*fish face* Oh my....that....*squee*

That was awesome. Really awesome. I am so glad I read it. I almost didn't 'cause of the length. But oh man, awesomeness. <3 <3 <3

Have you written much other stuff? Once everyone's revealed, I want to read more of your stuff.

And what I really loved is that...it is canon yet worked so beautifully. H/D is really difficult to work so well and romantically and everything and keep canon, but this worked really really well. And so when a canon compliant fic comes along, and it is awesome, that just really makes my day. THANK YOU!

Oh dear. I was kind of worried about the length too, but my recipient wanted it long and plotty. I'm glad you enjoyed it despite that!

I'm very flattered by seeing it as canon-compliant. I did my best, but worried a little (well, felt defensive) because I wanted to use that to write Harry and Draco as grownups, and they wouldn't be the same as they were at 17...

Wow. I loved this fic. The plot idea was great and the pace followed it naturally, with a great balance between description and action.

I loved all the characters. Ginny's support was wonderful and her relationship with Viktor was a great surprise. I've never seen him beyond the strong Quidditch star image before and you created a new one, with him being a caring, understanding man.

Al and Scorpius were great. It was very interesting to see Scorpius deal with his problem and see how his relationship with Draco was affected by it. Every interaction between them showed how much they cared for each other and how Draco was ready to try anything if it helped his son.

Harry and Draco's initial relationship transformed naturally into love and it was great to see them get over their argument in the end.

The magical table is one of my favourite magical objects :) I've always felt that there is a lot more to the magical world than what we've seen in the books and it's always a pleasure to read about something that feels so right in this world that you wonder why it hasn't been mentioned before.

It's a wonderful fic.

Oh, lovely :) Just the type of fic I love reading after a stressful day. I really liked the way you treated magic in this -- your background information on Squibs was very interesting, and Draco's carpenting was so creative as well. The idea of Harry having such a school is brilliant as well, and I love Ginny's relationship to Harry in this (and Viktor!). The children are all wonderful as well. Great read, all in all!

Oh, wow, that was a truly amazing story! nice, slow build and the really true feeling of how the two of them would still clash in some areas. I have to admit that i felt a bit sorry for Viktor until he was teasing back and forth with Harry and Ginny, he gets it and i loved that. Loved too that Ron was the only one in this fic who ended up in the Ministry; so often we adhere to the non-cannon mussings of JKR and have all three of the Trio working for the MLE in some fashion; i liked that you took it to another place and still managed to keep it in line with cannon.

And holy crap an ep. compliant fic that i LIKED!!! that's rare.

Over all this was amazing and beautiful and sensual. And plotty... mmmmMMmm i loves me some plot!

AWESOME JOB!!

It's lovely to feel that what I was giving to one person is also being enjoyed by others! Yes, the whole trouble with families is that they're complicated --and for both Ginny and Harry, the children's privacy would definitely come first. I like to think Ginny wouldn't be involved with someone who wasn't basically admirable, which is why Viktor is a decent guy. I agree -- all three working for the Ministry is just not on.

I'm really glad you liked it despite the ep compliance. I'm rather a EWE person myself a lot of the time...

Incredible read! And I so loved how you went into such detail on the nature of magic and the research into why there are Squibs. Absolutely adored Draco in this and it was amazing seeing a very flat and almost lost Harry come back into his own and start living again. Brilliant job.

Thank you! figuring out exactly why squibs are squibs and how to help them was my biggest challenge as a writer. Especially finding the right metaphors! I'm so glad you picked up on Harry being okay, but not happy, and then coming back as the person he was supposed to be. Hero!Harry really is I think canon.

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. I must confess, your name wasn't familiar to me, so I went to look at your lj, and sooo wanted to join the discussion. (which flattered me a great deal, especially since you weren't writing to me!) I too had the reaction you did to the first story -- gorgeous, brilliant, balanced, never could write like that... and in college, the very best readings always had me going away wanting to write. Wanting to be as good as they were someday. etc.

My friend and beta yelled at me last time I found a writer so overwhelmingly good it made me want to curl up and stop. "I like yours better," she said. I still like that writer's work better than my own, but I do remember two things I learned in classes: 1) Tastes in what makes something "good" can definitely diverge; and 2) the story decides the style. For me, fanfic is for good reads, so I write "good reads" which still fit what little I know about the rules on plot/character/style/whatever. That doesn't mean I don't get totally blown away by someone who writes in a completely different way.

Sorry for going on so long!

Anyway, thank you for reccing it, and I look forward to talking to you more about writing when I can do it non-anonymously!

Long fics makes my heart sing and the little pre-slash AS/S was the icing on the HD cake!

One question: Whatever happened to stupid, proud Atropa? Love the way you feminized Atrophy for her character!

I am definitely going to investigate any other works you may have once your name is revealed. <333

*looks innocent* pre-slash? what pre-slash?
Yes, I discovered I would really like shipping AS/S. I'm glad you like 'em long, because it was!

Atropa. Ah, one of three things: the Aurors caught up with her first, the Demons caught up with her first, or she lost all her money and lived among Muggles the rest of her life to avoid being caught.

I did like the "atrophy" meaning, but actually Atropa is a flower, as most of JKR's female characters are flowers -- Atropa Belladonna is deadly nightshade, and I couldn't resist.

I'm glad to hear you're going to look for my writing!

I may be overly tired but oh how I laughed at the tombstones Harry saw in his dream: Sirius Black: it was inevitable, Tom Riddle (1/7).. :D

Yay for you for not making them aurors. Overall, liked this very, very much. Loved Scorpius and surprisingly, all the kids were sweet. And both Harry and Draco didn't feel too adult, they definitely weren't boring. And the falling in love felt natural, which has been quite rare in most of the DH-compliant fics I've read recently.

Also, it's 5AM here right now so thank you for stealing my sleep.

You may be "overtired" but I'm glad you thought they were funny. I was shooting for irony -- our dreams are so often terrifying to us and have nowhere near similar emotional content to anyone else.

What, some kids wouldn't be sweet? Well, I'm glad you liked them -- I do too, though I think Harry was willing to throw James into the Thames once or twice. I'm glad they weren't boring. For me, that was my biggest anxiety other than getting it done at all. They were living relatively ordinary lives for the most part. I call this my "zen" story.

Sorry about your sleep. Hope you catch up tonight/today.

Thank you! I'm glad it's worth re-reading -- that's how I measure the value of a fic too. As to James, I'm delighted that you recognize the reality of adolescence. Since this included the epilogue, and the guys were grown up, I wanted to portray them as grownups, and I thought emphasizing that what they were, and how they related to each other as teenagers, was no sure predictor of being the same as adults.

This story is wonderful and pretty darn awesome. I was sucked into the plot before I knew what was happening and invested in Harry's happiness almost immediately afterward--I love that he's all grown up, learnt the taste of bitterness, but still the Chosen One despite it all. He's still a hero, and importantly in this story: Draco's hero.

There are so many great details I could pick out (Harry's ruefulness concerning his lack of proper education; Draco's wood-working skills; the delightfulness of Scorpius/Albus) -- but I have to make especial mention of the lovely first-time sex scene. It's sexy and cute and brimming with character and little flashes of humor and suffused with the feeling of intimacy: truly lovely.

I can't tell you how happy I am you picked up on how I see Harry (in this fic, anyway). Yes, I think Harry's center is being a hero, and being a teacher and researcher was a reasonably good fit, but he needed more. "Draco's hero." Right. I'm getting teary-eyed myself putting it like that.

I'm so glad you liked the first time sex. I wanted to try something beyond teh prOn, and experiment with showing genuine intimacy which becomes erotic. Wasn't sure I'd succeeded.

i am really only halfway with reading this story but I must comment on a few things i loved before i forget by the time i am done with the story and completely incoherent :)

1. i love the scene when harry and draco have sex for the first time. where harry learns things about draco and about himself...its beautifully written and constructed and refreshing. its a new way to look at sex that i've never seen before..not just the same old rough and tumble in bed :)

2. i loved the part where ron says "snakes don't change their skins" and harry just blinks but doesn't correct him. it just shows how wonderfully you've written all the characters

and of course i love draco as a doting father and harry as the insecure protective father and i love scorpius and all those elements of the story. and woodworking carpenter!draco...mm love him. :)

I'm totally blown away you stopped halfway through just to tell me where you were in the reading process! I love that and so seldom get it! I'm also delighted (and relieved) that you and a couple of other people have mentioned the first-time sex. I enjoy erotica, not porn; I mean, sex for lovers has a lot of meaning of which physical release is only one. So I was experimenting and didn't know if it turned out well.

Ron's snake thing -- oh yeah. And I'm so glad you like the blokes as fathers, not just as lovers. We acquire "hostages to fortune" along our way, and they change us. And I too loved Draco as a worker in wood.
