Ghetto-tastic Vacuum Forming!
Ohmigod, AJ actually updated the site... but not with FSS photos. =P

Building a vacuum form "table"
Vacuum forming

And I know there are people out there crying tears of blood over how ghetto this is.

Please let us know if anything is unclear. It's hard to explain stuff sometimes, especially if you're already familiar with the process. (I already caught a typo that I can't fix until I get home tonight. Ugh.)

Also, [info]tristencitrine posted a new wig tutorial on her site that is linked on the Tutorials page.

We have a 2-part rtv mold tutorial going up next. I might even stop playing WoW long enough to get it up this weekend. =D

That's a rockin' tutorial. :) One question-- is it OK to use your kitchen oven for this? I vaguely remember hearing something about not wanting to use an oven where you will want to cook stuff in the future.

If you're going to do a lot of vacuum forming, then you should definitely take it outside. The fumes from the melting plastic are bad for you (that would be my typo). I dunno the rule for how much is too much but we only did 14 pulls and that was pretty much it. I don't think we've used the table since.

I wonder if I need a bigger CAUTION note in there... @_@

How much does making a table cost? This is so interesting! I'd love ot be able to try it out one day.

And don't stop playing WOW...you begin to go thru withdrawl. ^_^

We spent around $100 including the cost of the vacuum so it's fairly cheap!

...I can't decide if that's more wonderfully ghetto or wonderfully resourceful.

Just wanted to let you know that the panel handouts listed first under your tutorials page have broken links.

What a great tutorial! You guys rock.

When I used to do vacuforming, I heated my styrene over the burner on my gas stove. Partly because I was too impatient to use the oven, and partly because I was afraid that I'd ruin my oven by melting toxic plastic all over the inside by putting it in then forgetting about it. So seeing you guys with your binder clip method seems positively high-tech to my ghetto sensibilities!

Just out curiosity, how thick was the styrene you used for the Easterling helmets? I don't think I ever tried vacuforming anything so tall, relative to the size of the sheet.
