Time for some progess pics on Five Star Stories!

Okay, I haven't done much, but I'm really happy with what I've done. I've spent the last couple of days quilting the gold vinyl for the obi tails. And yes, cheryll, there is very little gold on my costume, but still, it's progress, right?

I'm right now working on the funky-butt sleeve pattern. It's going to be interesting as this is the first time I've used hoop wire for sleeves.....

Yanno, looking at this makes me realize the necessity of a jigsaw sewing machine. I can't even imaging doing those tight little turns on a regular sewing machine. O.o

Errrr... that was done with a regular sewing machine. Yeah, I have to go slowly around the tight curves, but it really wasn't that difficult. Especially since the wax paper made it super slippery.

What's that transparent piece over your quilting? Is it baking paper?

It's wax paper. I use it so A) the vinyl won't stick to the foot, and B) I traced the design on it, so all I have to do is follow the line. Even I can do that :)

Stunning. Absolutely stunning. I found this livejournal from the HCC website and I have to say your work is utterly inspirational.

I have to ask what technique you're using. Have you stitched tracing paper onto the fabric, sewn over the design and then removed the paper? I'm assuming that it's machine stitched and if so I'm in awe of your skill in manipulating your machine to create something so exquisite.

It's wax paper. I use it so A) the vinyl won't stick to the foot (since you can't exactly get a teflon foot for a 1939 singer, which is what I use), and B) I traced the design on it, so all I have to do is follow the lines. Even I can do that :) After I'm done, I just tear the paper away. It requires some tweezer work, but not too bad.

I've been sewing for a loooonnngggg time, so the manipulation wasn't a big deal, it just took a while. But my superpower is tedious tasks :)

Wow. 1939 singer? That's pretty damn cool.

I took up cosplay about a year and a half ago so I feel like I'm still constantly learning. I like being forced to acquire new skills though so I keep upping the ante by picking deliriously beautiful but very detailed and difficult costumes. At the moment I'm working on Seth Nightroad from Trinity Blood. He he.

I adore your Tusken Raider mask. You really are inspiring. Learning metalwork is really hardwork.

You never stop learning, imho, and if you ever think, "oh, I never need to learn any new sewing thing again" it's probably time to quit. I'm always learning new techniques, and picking projects that require them. It's hard, because costuming isn't so much talent as skill, and the only way to develop a skill is lots and lots of time and money.

We're constantly asked some variant of "teach me your trick of costuming," and honestly, the only trick is experience, and you can't really teach it. Yeah, I can give tips on ironing, and bias seams, and how to flatline, but you can't really apply it without practicing it.
