Hello, now have more books (the collection ever grows) and was rather happy to purchase a few this summer in the islands themselves. Also have a CD program but am still not figuring out this whole grammar and verb thing. Anybody know how I change tenses? I've heard the grammar is like spanish but I still am incapable of constructing a sentance that says "The tree is green" or "the child is pretty" or something simple like that which is how we started out in spanish. (Still fondly remember learning first about school supplies and their colors.)

I'm visiting Hawaii in two months. Any one know where I can buy some beginner's books for Hawaiian there that will actually show me how the grammar works? I have the Ebert pocket dictonary, that learn to speak hawaiian CD-rom set and an old secondary textbook but I'm still lost.

Although I do not know much about Hawai'i, I too am sick of how they exaggerate the Hawai'ian culture insomuch that everyone uses a "Hawai'ian" theme as a stereotype for their parties and whatnot. Even all other Polynesian cultures become under the "Hawai'ian" label. The lū'au is now so Americanised with the stench of commercialism albeit, and it is as worse as having a typical "Asian" theme, putting all East and Southeast Asians to use chopsticks, speaking in some tonal language and have pale skin.
Nasaan ang katurungan? 'Auhea ke kaulike? Where is the justice?
I love all things Austronesian, for they are my distant blood-relatives as the Europeans are together despite languages and borders. To see an Austronesian country like Hawai'i be still under foreign influence does not promote or truly keep culture, in my humble opinion.
Sa lupa ay ang dugo ng Hawai'i.
I ka honua ke koko o Hawai'i e!

Has anyone thought of doing a boycott of american products?
I think the simplist thing Hawaiians can do is not to take part in American Society.
why do we keep associating with america if we dont want to be controlled by them?
Also i think we need to get us hawaiians out of the tourist industry and into local hawaiian businesses.
The tourist industy is destuctive to our culture and land.
Anyway, Great Livejournal page!

I am a Hawaii expat living in New Zealand and currently TAing a university class on Polynesian Issues.
I have to give a lecture on Hawaiian Sovereignty and wanted to ask here:
If you were giving an informative lecture on the issue— past, present and future,— what would you include?
Of course, I'll be telling the story of the overthrow of the monarchy, I'll be including music and poetry that speaks to the disenfranchisement of Kanaka Maoli, but what else? If you could give one message or say one thing (or several things) to young Polynesian students unfamiliar with the struggle in Hawai'i, what would you say?

Hi all,
I am in Hawaii, Honolulu to be exact, for two weeks. I am so TIRED of touristy shit in Honolulu. The only place I found that was real was is the coffee shop accross the street from the Hilton Hawaiian villiage. I am done with touristy crap. I just want a place where I can get something to eat and get a beer with local people. I don't want to hear about what "johnny" did in the ocean, I just want a taste local people. Hell, I can talk to people from out of town back home. Someone please help me!!!
