Commission I'm still waiting to get paid for:

Has 100 (200) black pages. I accidentally wrinkled the back endpaper, which i am still kicking myself for. The client sent the picture for the cover.

Hello there!
I just joined this community and it's my first time posting, so greetings! I apologize for the formatting, it's a crosspost that went bad.

So the concept of this project is about space relating to the reader. It can be looked upon from the front to get a layered distant effect, or .
unfolded from the side, to show distance, and wide open spaces.

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l153/poofmongoose/DSC_0001.jpg

The whole thing is made of Canson C-Cream drawing paper. It's kind of like a thin bristol. It was cut with a xacto with a pointed tip, and i did not count the hours.

In the second picture you can see the case that is fits in. If you look reaaaaally carefully, you can see the small deer head that is hiding the case together. It is very faint because it is clear.
There are also little things hidden in some of the pages, like the antlers in the next image.

There are more pictures to come, but I am far to frustrated with photo right now.

Thanks very much!

Pennies made before '82 (and the ones from early '82) were all copper. The ones from late '82 onward are zinc with copper plates. I handled so many, I can tell the difference. This book is made from 8 all copper pennies from my pocket, the week after I made the previous penny book.

These date from 1972 to 1982.

Hi there,

I'm new to the community and was wondering if I could get some tips. I've recently learned how to bind books, but I've only made covers using bookcloth and would like to branch out. They're kind of blah. Some of the covers on here are drop dead gorgeous, and I'd love to learn some new techniques.

Does anybody have any suggestions for websites or books with tutorials? I love some of the Japanese paper covers (how do you fasten the paper to a harder backing?) and so many other creative creations. At some point I'd like to use my art as a cover, but I don't know what type of media would work best.

Thanks!

Hi everyone
I am making an artistic book, using the covers of old hard-backed books as my pages (about 10 in all). I will be binding it using one of the methods from Keith Smith’s volume on single pages.
The hard back covers are various sizes, which I want to keep.
Thus suggestions please:
I am thinking that by centring all the pages it will look better artistically, particularly with one of the smallest covers on top with a larger one poking out all the way around when viewed lying flat, however, this will make it difficult to display in the gallery. I am assuming upright with the pages fanned out and the whole thing drooping forward and looking like it’s about to fall over. Thus the other option is to keep the bottom edge of the book even.

Your thoughts appreciated

[[ HUDSON LINE RAILROAD. ]]

The front of this notebook features one of my TTV photographs of the autumn view from a MetroNorth train along the Hudson River line.

TTV stands for "through the viewfinder," in this case, that of a vintage, square format camera. This gives the images a retro feel and a variance in focus that isn't common to straightforward digtal photography.

- 6.25" x 6.25" (16 cm x 16 cm)
- 200 pages.
- Bound with turquoise blue waxed Irish linen thread.

Unlikely as it seems, do any of you know of a more active community for bookbinders/makers? Not just regarding the artistic/crafty aspect -which I know gets it's attention from a pretty dynamic community at [info]handmadebooks -, but more centered on artisan bindery and conservation work.

Mayhap on Dreamwidth, which is supposed to be a more artistic place?

Thank you!

Rather than making signatures I have been experimenting with loose single sheets. My first attempt looked good but fell apart as soon as the glue dried: I glued the edges of the loose sheets and glued the sheets to the spine. As soon as I opened the book, pages starting falling out.

My second attempt included a semi-stab binding arrangement: I sewed the loose sheets together in four different places - like stab binding but without threading from hole to hole. And I glued the sheets together again. Then I made sure the hinge was glued and securely tightened to the sheets on the edge. And added endpapers. This book is about 100 pages.

My only complaint is that the book doesn't open flat and I'm wary of opening it too far in case the glue wears off and the pages fall out again - unlikely since they are sewn together. So, my question: is there a simple or easier way to glue single loose sheets? What do you all do?

Usually my books have some story to go with it. I think that every book deserves a story.
So this book is called "A Star Caught By A Dream" and it's story goes as follows:

There once lived a little star. She liked to listen to the waves of the ocean and to secretly watch her reflection in the water. She was a beautiful little star just like many other beautiful little stars. She was waiting for a Debute Ball in the middle of August. During the ball little stars could take off from the sky and follow their dreams.
However, on the day when the Debute Ball was supposed to take place, the little star got sick. She had to lie in bed with a scarf around her neck. The doctor didn’t want to hear anything about dances or following dreams.
The little star got really upset as it knew that there would be no other chance for her to look for her dream. She would have to watch the world from the skies for the rest of her life.
So every night she watched her reflection in the ocean when one October night she decided to reach for the water. The water was far away, so the little star had to reach hard and suddenly she felt herself falling into the ocean.
That’s how the little star was caught by her dream.

It's on sale on my etsy store

Hello! I'm announcing the opening of my online shop, BoundenStudio!

Here's a shot of one of the books currently available:

This leather bound, hardcover, coptic stitch sketchbook/journal features a print transfer of a meditating cyclops kitten! All my other books are also leather and suede, all stuff I've salvaged from thrift stores and dumpster dives - the pages are quality artists' paper.

I'm very new to being a seller of my own work and would appreciate any and all feedback and/or critique, of my work AND my photos/descriptions/wording/etc.

Again, BoundenStudio!

Thanks in advance for looking!

What kind of paper do you guys use for the actual pages of books? I want to make a planner, but cardstock is too heavy and printer paper is too light. I can't find anything reasonably priced inbetween, like around 60lb or 70lb weight. The stuff I've been finding is around $50 or even more for a ream. D:

Edit: Thank you all for your replies! I found an awesome art store around here that gives 10% off to students and they have tons of paper! Yay!
