any of several short-tailed, stout-bodied, burrowing rodents, as Cricetus cricetus, of Europe and Asia, having large cheek pouches.
You may use this community to talk about anything to do with hamsters, with a couple of exceptions. (See the rules section.) You may share photos of your own hamsters (see the How To Post Your Photos tutorial if you're not sure how to do this), post cute stories or poems/songs about hamsters, ask for advice on how to care for hamsters, write a big ramble about how much you love your little critter... anything really, as long as it has something to do with hamsters and does not go against our community rules!
We have three basic rules. If you do not follow these rules, there will be consequences. Repeated or severe violation of the rules will result in you being banned from the community.
1.) DO be respectful and polite to other members.
Many pet communities on LiveJournal are extremely "snarky" and people are afraid to post in them. I do not want this community to be like that. When posting a comment on another member's entry, take a minute to read it back to yourself. Is it polite? Is it friendly? Is it civil? If not, please do not post it. Rudeness will not be tolerated. If a member posts with something that you disagree with, there are ways of expressing your opinion without resorting to rudeness. Think before you post.
2.) DO NOT post videos depicting cruelty to hamsters or other animals.
We do not want to see hamsters fighting, "dancing", or being hunted down by cats.
3.) DO NOT post articles, photos or links containing cruelty to hamsters or other animals, including hoaxes and jokes.
This includes news stories about animal abuse, amateur projects such as the hot air balloon hamster (which we've all seen a million times, thanks!), instructions for how to make a ninja hamster, etc. If you want to rant about such things, try a community like![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif)
stupidpetowners. This community is for people who love hamsters, and many of us do not want to hear about cruel acts, fake or otherwise.
We keep a note of everyone who violates the above rules, and work on a "three strikes and you're out" basis. Minor rule-breaking offences (posting an article about animal cruelty, being impolite, posting a link to a cruel video you found online) will result in one strike. Severe rule-breaking offences (extremely rude comments, being an obvious troll, or posting a cruel video you claim to have made yourself) will result in three strikes and an immediate, permanent ban.
We also have three guidelines. While these are not strict rules, you should try to adhere to them.
1.) DO try to be considerate when posting many (or large) images.
We would love to see photos of your little fuzzballs, but please take the time to resize your pictures or place them behind an LJ cut. For more information on how to do this, please read the How To Post Your Photos tutorial.
2.) DO take the time to browse our tags section before asking a question.
Many questions have been asked before, and while our members will be happy to help you out, you may save everyone a little time and effort if you try to find out the answers for yourself before posting.
3.) DO tag your entries if you can
It will be greatly appreciated as it helps keep the community organized and can help members in finding relevant information.
4.) DO contact us if you have any complaints.

The Hamsters LiveJournal Community has been in existence since 2nd March 2002, whenblob realised LJ was lacking a place for hamster owners. It has grown in size over the years and now has over 1,000 members. On 24th March 2008, after six years, blob decided to hand the community over to her three co-moderators, kyboshia, tjsvixen, and hellneverknow.
