RAD class

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 8:44 PM
I'm a sophomore at Smith looking to take the RAD self-defense class at Hampshire that runs from late January-early Feb after J-term when classes start up again. Is is difficult to get a spot in? Anyone who has taken the class before & has something to say about it is more than free to comment as well. I think Amanda Surgen is teaching it, but I could be remembering wrong.

Music Scene/other

  • Sep. 12th, 2009 at 8:19 AM
So I'm applying to Hampshire for 2010, and I just had a few questions.
  1. I was wondering what the local band scene was like around Hampshire. What about the consortium?
  2. How's the hampshire music department? I'm not planning for my main concentration to be music, but I may want it to involve it a little.
  3. I'm a drummer. Are there drums on campus, or should I bring mine?
  4. I love hampshire. It's my first choice, and when I visited it, I fell in love more. My grades aren't that bad, though, I don't really think reflect who I am, and could hurt my application. It's a high B average, but I have had consistent Bs in an alternative english program where you grade yourself (I give myself Bs to help myself improve). Could the grades hurt me?
Thanks.

Scientific research!

  • Sep. 10th, 2009 at 12:59 PM

Regular old internet research just doesn't cut it, I'm afraid :P

mailbox?

  • Aug. 29th, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Dear lazyweb of Hampshire:

I have a problem; I am getting into Hampshire late in the evening Monday -- this year the housing office arranged for keys to be put in mailboxes for acquisition after-hours. However, I think I may not remember the combination to my mailbox -- I have some time before my plane leaves on Monday when I could call Hampshire, though. Which office(s) should I call in order to ensure I don't end up spending a night sleeping in the mail room or Airport Lounge or such?

I hope to see many of you at Pi-Con!

Sorry to those of you seeing this twice, but I felt Hampshire students could appreciate this. I hope you can see the hope I do in this situation. And join in the efforts to help these people take back their country.

If you are reading this right now, you have more luxury than someone in Iran could ever hope for right now. If you are watching TV or a video on youtube, updating your status on Facebook, Tweeting, or even texting your friend, you are lucky. If you are safe in your home, and were able to sleep last night without the sounds of screaming from the rooftops, you need to know and understand what is happening to people just like you in Iran right now.

They are not the enemy. They are a people whose election has been stolen. For the first time in a long time, a voice for change struck the youth of Iran, just as it did for many people in the United States only seven months ago. Hossein Mousavi gained the support of millions of people in Iran as a Presidential candidate. He stands for progressiveness. He supports good relations with the West, and the rest of the world. He is supported with fervor as he challenges the oppressive regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On Friday, millions of people waited for hours in line to vote in Iran's Presidential election. Later that night, as votes came in, Mousavi was alerted that he was winning by a two-thirds margin. Then there was a change. Suddenly, it was Ahmadinejad who had 68% of the vote - in areas which have been firmly against his political party, he overwhelmingly won. Within three hours, millions of votes were supposedly counted - the victor was Ahmadinejad. Immediately fraud was suspected - there was no way he could have won by this great a margin with such oppposition. Since then, reports have been coming in of burned ballots, or in some cases numbers being given without any being counted at all. None of this is confirmed, but what happened next seems to do the trick.

The people of Iran took the streets and rooftops. They shout "Death to the dictator" and "Allah o akbar." They join together to protest. Peacefully. The police attack some, but they stay strong. Riots happen, and the shouting continues all night. Text messaging was disabled, as was satellite, and websites which can spread information such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and the BBC are blocked in the country. At five in the morning, Arabic speaking soldiers (the people of Iran speak Farsi) stormed a university in the capital city of Tehran. While sleeping in their dormitories, five students were killed. Others were wounded. These soldiers are thought to have been brought in by Ahmadinejad from Lebanon. Today, 192 of the university's faculty have resigned in protest.

Mousavi requested that the government allow a peaceful rally to occur this morning - the request was denied. Many thought that it would not happen. Nevertheless, first a few thousand people showed up in the streets of Tehran. At this point, it is estimated that 1 to 2 million people were there. Mousavi spoke on the top of a car. The police stood by. For a few hours, everything was peaceful. Right now, the same cannot be said. Reports of injuries, shootings, and killings are flooding the internet. Twitter has been an invaluable source - those in Iran who still know how to access it are updating regularly with picture evidence. People are being brutally beaten. Tonight will be another night without rest for so many in Iran no older than I am. Tonight there is a Green Revolution.

Box springs, anyone?

  • May. 12th, 2009 at 2:21 PM
Hey everybody. I'm graduating this year and I'll be moving away from the Amherst area after Commencement. My queen-size box springs for my bed won't fit in the moving van. I've considered taking it to the Salvation Army or just leaving it at the free bin on Hampshire's move-out day, but I thought I'd post on here first to see if anyone was interested.

I bought the box springs new for $139 last September and they're in really good condition, and I was hoping to get something between $30-$50 for them but I'll give them away for free if I have to.
