| Monster Mondays - Celtic Halloween Spirits |
[Jun. 9th, 2009|06:20 pm] |
Earlier I wrote on Celtic origins of Halloween and the important changes that took place with the Holiday in America. Today for Monster Mondays I'm going to look at the early Monsters of Celtic Halloween. The traditional holiday bears little resemblance to the Halloween we know now. It was not a celebration of death, horror, and thrills, but a harvest festival and new years eve celebration. The most important practices involved fortune telling, making predictions for the coming year, and it was believed that on this day ordinary rules did not apply, and souls, spirits, and fairies could be present on earth. Most descriptions of what souls, spirits, and fairies visit earth are rather vague, but a few specific supernatural creatures are named. As is usually the case, the first at the party are the first to go, and I don't think I've ever seen any of the Celtic Halloween monsters doing the Monster Mash or out trick-or-treating.

Cailleach Bheur -Also known as Cally Berry (no relation to Hallie Berry), Old Woman Winter, The Blue Hag, The Storm Hag, and The Veiled One. In all respects, the Cailleach is a god and not a monster. She is the embodiment of winter reborn every Samhain/Halloween and turned to stone, or to a tree, or to a young woman every Beltane. Her staff can freeze anything with a touch and she is the gaurdian of the animals. Some say she carvedthe Mountains of Scotland with a hammer and pick. She once fell asleep while pumping a well, flooding the valley and killing hundreds. That valley is now Loch Awe.

| | hopeful | ] | Hey guys! Just wanted to say "hi," and to see what folks think about a new piece I just put up for folks' perusal. (I've tried to sell my work before, but never w/much success, so I figgered I'd see how kindred spirits felt about the work, to gauge if there's even a market for such stuffs.) It's a little ghosty, who's still hoping to get a bit of trick-or-treating done; called "Everyone Loves Hallowe'en." :)
Hope you like! Nae
(X-posted at the various Hallow-centric communities, to gauge interest.) |

| Hey Y'all! Two Things: |
[Nov. 12th, 2008|01:37 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | exhausted | ] | 1. I know I an't no Martha S., and it's past All Hallows, but I'm still proud o' my dilapidated li'l Haunted Hollows Hallowe'en gingerbread house anyway. ^_^ They had templates n' stuff, but I proverbially chucked 'em as I like to do stuff my own way. (Even if I do suck at this whole icing thing. ;)) I can't seem to get how in HELL you keep the frosting nozzle ON the frosting tube... ??? Mine kept coming off, and although I got it to work for a while after I taped it on, the derned thing still overloaded and popped off again. (Fortunately that was later after I'd done all the detail work and was pretty near done w/the project.) This was from a Hallowe'en kit I got at Wal-Mart, and I am just -too tickled- that they've got an All Hallows equivalent to the classic Christmas type. :D:D
( There's more scary gingerbread stuffs- including pics- under here. :) )(Oh, and sorry for the orange smears around the base- the house came rooted to the board, and that's what happened when I was acclemating to the icing and it kept drippin' offa stuff. 'S why I have the little coffin there on Mr. Ghosty's side- to cover up a seeerious smoodge. ;)) </div></div></div> <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chlvgtkmhdm</a>
Hope ya like! ;D
And 2: I'm working on the Harvest edition of my li'l podcast, Eclectica, and was wondering if anyone might know of any good Hallowe'en, harvest, spooky or pagan/Wiccan or Native American music/spoken word pieces appropriate to the season? I have a TON of ideas as to what I'd like to use, but I gotta either have permission from the artists to play stuff, or have it already be pod-safe. Gots any ideeers? ;D
Danke! Nae
(PS Yes, I know it's post Hallowe'en, but as I was running a HUGE zombie event up until the day after All Hallows, I didn't have the chacne to work on my show. ::( Thanks for whatever ideas ya might have! ;D) |
