| question about braiding ribbons in hair |

I have a question about braiding ribbons in your hair (for reference I have a little over bsl hair). I'll tell you the type of braid that I want to do in case that makes any difference. The braid is a traditional one I think but I don't know if it has a name so I guess I'll just describe it for you guys. You divide you hair so that it is half up and half down. Then you divide the top half of your hair into two parts, left and right I guess you could say. Then you braid both sides so you have two braids when your done with that you join the two together at the end of your hair with a hair tie or barrette. I hope you were able to follow that. Now for the question: to braid ribbons in that hair style how do you first get the ribbon in your hair and stay in your hair because once you start braiding the ribbon wants to fall out and slide around accentually. Sorry if this is hard to understand I'm bad at punctuation and spelling (I'm dyslexic). Thank you for your time. |

| rope braids |
[Jun. 2nd, 2008|11:37 pm] |
Hi again! I figured I may as well post my hair from a wedding I went to last weekend. There was swing dancing so I had to have my hair up and secure so that I didn't accidentally (or not-so-accidentally, haha) whack anybody with it.

It's sort of a variation on a hairstyle that I do kind of often. First I did a rope braid down either side, then gathered all my hair at the nape of my neck into ponytail. I split it in half and put each half into a rope going in opposite directions (the right rope twists to the right and the left rope twists to the left). Then I took the left rope and wrapped it around the other in a bun going anti-clockwise and pinned it down, and wrapped the remaining rope clockwise and pinned it down. Pretty simple and straightforward. Yay. Wish I had a better picture of it.
Oh actually here's a picture of it (without the side ropes) from last November. :-) |

| Hi I'm new |

Hi, I don't know why I didn't think of joining a hair braiding forum before. I have long straight hair (just past my butt) and the only thing I really can do with it is braid it (even if it was short, it wouldn't hold curls). So I suppose sometime I'll get all nerdy and post some of my braid ideas when I get around to it. :-)
I'm also wondering something -- are there any of you who live in Seattle area who are particularly good at braiding (or know anybody who is)? I'm getting married in August and I'm not really convinced that a professional salon could braid my hair in a way that I'd like them to (they're great at fancy up-dos and whatnot, but most of them don't know how to deal with braiding long hair, I actually went into Gene Juarez to ask them about it and one lady was like, "Ooh, I can french braid!" . . . yeah . . . I can do that myself, I don't need to pay someone $200 to do that, haha).
Anyway, I'm stoked to have found a bunch of people who like braiding (even if the community does seem a bit quiet, oh well). :-) |

hello beautiful braiders! i'm looking forward to the day when i can call myself that. i'm learning to french braid, or about to tackle the task, but i'm confused on how to translate the instructions to braid my side bangs. the only tutorials i have found deal with braiding pigtails or the back of the hair into french braids, and i cannot practice on my own hair because it is too short! the only part i can is on my bangs, which is so cute. i want them to look like this: (random picture i found so i cannot even ask the girl this is a picture of!) any help would be greatly appreciated!! i really hope someone can give me a walk through or hints of some sort. |

Hello. I've been watching this group for some time - been fairly quiet.
I have a question. I have straight brown hair that's almost waist-length, layered, and I'd like to know if there's anything beyond a simple plait that I can do with it. (I don't know anything more than that.) |

I'm getting the itch to start braiding again. My old host dropped my pages (hmm, maybe I should have paid my subscription fees?), so I put some pix up on my Flickr stream.
Check 'em out, if you are so inclined!
And let's see some of those sparkly holiday 'dos, ladies! |

Here's a couple of silly braids that I thought I would share with you guys, the first is quite obviously a braided beard, and the second is a crazy runway style I concocted, it's modeled after a rooster haha, ENJOY :) |

| French braid and bangs |

I just joined. I wonder if anyone can give me step by step instructions on how I can French braid my own hair, I don't know how to French braid at all. Also I'm just starting to grow out my bangs and wondered if anyone has tips on how I can keep the hair out of my face that doesn't involve hair clips or those things that push all your hair back, I don't like how they look on me. |

| | The Wonder Years on TV | ] | Hello! I'm new to this community and also completely new to the wonderful world of braiding. :)
( A quick history of my hair. )
Anyway, now that I'm growing out my hair, I want to start practicing braiding early. I know I don't have all THAT much hair, but I obviously have enough since it was long enough to put up into a beautiful zig-zag braid while I was at the Maryland Renaissance Festival this weekend. ( Here are a couple of pictures! )
Does anyone have any suggestions for good step-by-step, do-it-yourself tutorials with images that aren't exclusive to very long hair? Thanks! :) ♥ Ale |

| a lot of beginner questions^^ |
[Apr. 22nd, 2007|07:46 pm] |
a friend asked me to braid her hair mixing it with synthetic hair and i think i can handle it, but i need some hints, like - how much synthetic hair will i need? the same amount as the natural hair? more? less? is it up to me to decide? i don't know how much to buy, and it's not exactly cheap...
also, i think i know how to start a braid with the extra hair, but i have no idea how to end it. when i braid people, i usually just put tiny rubber bands a few cm from the ends of the hair, but i've always seen braids with synthetic hair ended with no bands at all, looking like they've been heat-sealed or something... how do i do that? also, my friend's hair is a bit uneven as she's growing out her bangs... any extra tips how to handle that little problem? i guess add more hair in the front...?
just so you know, i'm not a complete beginner to hairbraiding^^ i just prefer cornrows and french braids and five-strand braids and other things like that... all natural, never tried synthetic... a bit of "stage-fright", i guess. :) here's a photo gallery of some people who kindly allowed me to play with their hair :) |

I'm sorry to barge in like this, but I'm trying to find someone in the Philadelphia area who could braid my hair for an event in a couple of weeks, and am having no luck. Does anyone know of someone in my area, or even within short Amtrak distance (maybe as far as Baltimore or New York)? |

I got kind of bored earlier and since I had freshly washed (and yet still strangely dirty) hair, I decided to try another crown braid. I first did one of these a few years ago with the directions on dreamweaverbraiding.com, but it was really hard to get it even, because the directions there seem to assume that you can see the back of your head as you braid. A few months ago I found a new set of directions in longhair in the memories section and tried again. I find these ones to be a lot easier (either that or my braiding skills have improved). Anyway, this was supposed to be a full crown braid but ended up being half of one, because there was too much difference in the thickness of the beginning and the end of the crown part (if that makes sense). There's three or four bobby pins, with one of them hiding the tie, and the very end is just loose.

So sometimes my sister likes to use my hobby to her advantage. A while ago she was watching project runway and she saw the host of the show wearing a cute stylish braided hairstyle. She immediately brought me in front of the t.v. and asked me to recreate it. I only saw certain angles of the hairstyle but I managed to do it. Her hair was perfect for the style because it is CRAZY curly, unlike mine. The cool thing about it is that it's kind of an up to date way of braiding your hair, and I just love that.

| Concerning the Braiding and Cutting of Hair |
[Sep. 25th, 2006|12:31 am] |
So I recently had a difficult experience. I've had a hard time talking about it to people, because on the surface it shouldn't have bothered me so much. But it did, and it occurs to me now that perhaps this community might be the right place to post about it.
The story of a ( good deed and the consequences beneath the cut. )
Thanks for reading. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has had to do something like this, and how they dealt with it. |

| | curious | ] | well this IS a braiding community so I'm sure someone can answer a couple questions I have...
I see a lot of those little flowers that a few of you use to decorate the braids...where can I buy those..and how securely do they stay in your hair?
I know how to do a round and flat four strand braid...but how do you get them in the dutch style to where they pop out...I'm having trouble with that...it seems crazy to me that I can do a dutch 5 strand but not those other two...
THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP ME WITH THESE THINGS! <3 |
