"People on terrorist watch list allowed to buy guns"

updated 3:17 p.m. EDT, Mon June 22, 2009

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- When people on the government's terrorist watch list have tried to buy guns or explosives in recent years, the government has let them the vast majority of the time.

That's the finding of a new report by the Government Accountability Office, sent to lawmakers last month and released publicly Monday.

From February 2004 to February 2009, 963 background checks using the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System "resulted in valid matches with terrorist watch list records; of these matches, approximately 90 percent were allowed to proceed because the checks revealed no prohibiting information," the GAO report says. About 10 percent were denied.

"Under current law, there is no basis to automatically prohibit a person from possessing firearms or explosives because they appear on the terrorist watch list," wrote the GAO's director of homeland security and justice issues, Eileen R. Larence.

"Rather, there must be a disqualifying factor (i.e., prohibiting information) pursuant to federal or state law, such as a felony conviction or illegal immigration status."

Of the 963 background checks, 865 were allowed to proceed, and 98 were denied, the report said.

The GAO provided the report in response to a request from Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-New Jersey. The GAO said Lautenberg had requested an update to a 2005 report.

In a statement Monday, Lautenberg said, "this new report is proof positive that known and suspected terrorists are exploiting a major loophole in our law, threatening our families and our communities. This 'terror gap' has been open too long, and our national security demands that we shut it down."

The statement said Lautenberg is introducing legislation that would give the U.S. attorney general "authority to stop the sale of guns or explosives to terrorists."

However, an official with the National Rifle Association, the leading lobbyist group that espouses gun ownership rights, said problems with the terror watch list made a broad prohibition likely to violate the rights of law-abiding citizens.

"The integrity of the terror watch list is poor, as it mistakenly contains the names of many men and women, including some high-profile Americans, who have not violated the law," said a statement by Chris W. Cox, the NRA chief lobbyist. "In fact, a March 2009 report by the inspector general of the Department of Justice concluded that many people whose names were mistakenly placed on the list remain there even after their cases have been vetted and closed."

The GAO notes that being on a terrorist watch list does not mean that someone is involved in any terrorist activity.

Last month, the Justice Department reported that the FBI had kept thousands of names on its watch list based on outdated information and should have removed them.

Note that on CNN's tv broadcast today around 2 pm, the article's title was simplified from
"People on terrorist watch list allowed to buy guns" to "Terrorists allowed to buy guns" which of course conjures up images of Osama Bin Laden waltzing into a gun store and coming out with a rocket laucnher. Video clips showed rapid gunfire, scary looking black rifles, and large explosions to get the point across. Fear mongering at its finest. The problem of course is that new gun laws are born from the minds of the fearful and ignorant, and these misleading insinuations cater to that mindset.

Apparently some people in this country think that simply being on a list of persons of interest equates to being a tried and convicted criminal. Sure, what the hell do we need due process for? We have lists!

For too long, women have had to compromise practicality for beauty. Men got pants with cargo pockets and built-in knee pads, women got clothes whose only built-in feature was cuteness. But why should men get all the high-speed low-drag tactical toys?

Tactical gear is no longer an all boys club. Tactical Corsets bring female operators MILSPEC features like MOLLE modular pouch attachment webbing and self-adjustable quick-release buckles in a load-bearing carrier designed to support the female form. And we're just getting started.

You of course remember our buddy Nagin from the Katrina Gun Grab?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/06/07/china.nagin.flu.virus/index.html

can't make this shit up son!

(CNN) -- The mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, has been quarantined in China after possible exposure to the H1N1 virus, his office said Sunday.

Mayor Ray Nagin, who traveled to China on an economic development trip, flew on a plane that carried a passenger being treated for symptoms suspected to be from the virus, commonly known as the swine flu virus, the mayor's office said in a statement.

Nagin, his wife and a member of his security detail have been quarantined in Shanghai, China, though all three are symptom free, the statement said.

"The mayor is being treated with utmost courtesy by Chinese officials," the statement said.

Ceeon Quiett, the mayor's director of communications, told CNN that Nagin had been sitting beside a passenger who "exhibited the symptoms of H1N1," but Nagin showed no signs of illness.

"We have talked with him and he is in good spirits," Quiett said, adding that there was no indication how long the quarantine would last.

OpenCarry.org is urging pro-gun voters to exploit Virginia's "open" primary and for Virginians of all political affiliations to vote for Brian Moran in VA's June 9th Democratic Primary.

Reasoning? Brian Moran, though a Democrat has consitently been a pretty eliable pro-gun vote. His Republican competition for Govenor is Bob McDonnell. Bob is wayyyyyyy ahead in the polls and very, very progun.

Point being is to keep the race between pro-gun candidates. The Democratic Primary is tight and a few thousand votes will make the difference.

Last year our Governor Kaine TWICE vetoed legislation approved by the VA State Legislature that would allow Virginians with CHP's to go into places that serve alcohol so long as they did not drink (as have 37 other states adopted).

This year is going to be different for a host of gun bills. Even though Republican Bob McDonnell is heavily favored to win the govenorship, we want 2 things as Virginia gun owners.

1-We want to ensure the race is between 2 pro-gun candidates.

2-We want to illustrate to anti-gun Democrats that we are strong enough to manipulate their parties candidates. A few thousand votes can make the difference, and we have about 5,000 VCDL members and I don't know how many OpenCarry.org members. This is very doable and some important lessons need to be taught a lesson.

Next year a host of pro-gun bills are going thru the VA State Legislature, Yahoo. In fact Bob McDonnell was attacked on prime time TV by anti-gun zealot Bloomberg, mayor of NY. He was singled out by Bloombergs personal fortune buying prime time ads because McDonell, as Attornet General, tolf Bloomberg the next time he and his goons came to VA to make fake straw purchases and sue the gun shops McDonnell would have a felony warrant uissues for Bloomberg. Bloomberg even had the relatives of the VA Tech tragedies on TV with him exploiting them (all the anti-gun zealots are like vultures circling around hoping for a tragedy they can capitolize on).

Sp McDonnel, a stand up, pro-gun, type of guy is almost certain to win the govenorship. Illustrating to VA Democrats we (gun owners) can manipulate their politics is just icing on the cake. Lets rock the house.

Empty jail cells are normally something to celebrate, but Wayne County's top law enforcement officials say the hundreds of vacant jail beds are not because of a drop in crime or more reasonable sentencing. Floors of the downtown Detroit jail are empty because police are arresting fewer people accused of those crimes.

Was attending a local gun show when I decided I needed a solid battle rifle in a more serious caliber than 7.62x39 .

So I grabbed an Ishapore 2A-1 Enfield in 7.62x51 Nato (can I safely use .308 in this gun? I see the specs for .308 can be a bit higher pressure.)

Cosmoline scrubbing time. :) I wouldn't expect much from Indian machining but the rifle feels solid and tight like a good rifle should. I'll let ya know how she shoots.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/08/gun.control.poll/index.html

From Bill Schneider
CNN Senior Political Analyst

(CNN) -- From Oakland, California, to Binghamton, New York, several mass shootings in recent weeks have killed dozens across the country. But has there been an effect on public opinion?

Yes, and in a surprising way.

Since 2001, most Americans have favored stricter gun laws, though support has slightly dropped in recent years: 54 percent favored stricter laws in 2001, compared with 50 percent in 2007, according to Gallup polling.

Now, a recent poll reveals a sudden drop -- only 39 percent of Americans now favor stricter gun laws, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll.

The gradual, long-term decline in support for gun control from the early 1990s to 2008 coincided with a decline in the murder rate. But this year's sudden drop seems to be influenced by politics, namely the Obama administration.

"If [President Obama] and the people in control of Congress right now could have what they want, they would heavily restrict or eliminate guns from this country," said Sean Healy, an attorney who has advocated on behalf of gun-owner rights. Watch why some people don't want stricter gun laws ยป

Or, Americans may have heard the new administration's take on assault weapons.

"There are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstate the ban on the sale of assault weapons," said Attorney General Eric Holder in February.

In March, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, "I, as a senator, supported measures to try and reinstate it. Politically, that is a very big hurdle in our Congress. But there may be some approaches that could be acceptable, and we are exploring those."

Still, the decline in American favor for stricter gun laws doesn't mean people want to see restrictions lifted -- 46 percent want no change in the current law, while only 15 percent want gun laws that are less strict.

Nearly all the decline in support for stricter gun laws is from people who don't identify themselves as Democrats. Six in 10 Democrats still support stricter gun laws, but support has dropped 13 points among Republicans and 17 points among independents. Half of all independents supported stricter gun laws in 2007; now only a third of them do.

The poll, based on phone interviews with 1,023 U.S. adults from Friday through Sunday, were conducted after Friday's mass shooting in Binghamton, New York, where 13 people were killed at an immigrant services center.

On the issue of whether gun laws should be stricter, the poll contains a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The breakdown of opinions on that issue over party lines had a sampling error of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

Gonzo
Hi List....I got a couple of guns for sale.....I figured I'd give you lot first shot...(pun intended)....before they went up on Guns America or some other on-line venue.....

I don't have access to a camera right now, so I will try and described them as clearly as possible.

1. A Savage 99E series A. No sights. Early gun before the counter was put in. blueing thin, decent case on the lever. Lever safety. Good bore, mechanically sound. .308 Cal. At some point in it's life, some yahoo, trying for a tacticool, or scout rifle look, painted the stock black. Did a pretty decent job actually. Looking for $300 Plus shipping

2. A CVA 12 GA SxS muzzle loader. This is an assembled kit gun, completely unfinished, and probably never fired. (No sanding, no blueing, no polishing, no nothing) 1 hammer doesn't stay back. mechanically sound otherwise. Good basis for a nice do it yourself, or mebbe a Howda pistol. Looking for $100 plus shipping.

3. A Model M-38 Carcano in 7.35. This is to all intents and purposes a parts gun. No front or rear sight, sporterized stock, old red rubber recoil pad. Mostly brown patina. Mechanically sound. Bore dirty. It's dated 1939 (Fascist year XVII) and is of Terni make. It has a tiny little SA stamp, and may be a Finnish "white death" gun. Looking for $50 plus shipping.

A .30-06 Remington-Spartan (Izmash-Baikal) Side by side double rifle. Near new except for 1 small ding in the stock. It has had a total of 20 rounds put through it. Mechanically perfect. Finish perfect. Quarter rib grooved for scope, adjustable jack screw under barrel to regulate impact of rounds as desired. fixed sights. Just a sweet, sweet double rifle. Looking for $600 plus shipping on this one.

brings out the big guns.
I think I should address this barrel movement I am getting with my Eddystone Model of 1917 30-06.

I would hate to have it reduce the value of the gun but I don't think it can be very accurate with all that movement.

Has anyone tried to float or bed their rifle? Has anyone floated an Eddystone or Enfield? What material should I use?

I was thinking I could just add some paper to the end of the barrel under the original floating; which should float it and not devalue the gun... Unless that would cause another problem.

I think I need to re-float it to be safe. The insides of the stock is hand carved.

In an earlier post in the [info]guns community about the show airing on MSNBC tonight (about guns and kids) there was some question about the statistics used. Well, I did some searching and tracked it to the Children's Defense Fund as being the folks who took statistics from various government agencies and presented them...creatively.

If you'd like to see a copy of their latest "gun report" you can find it here: http://www.childrensdefense.org/child-research-data-publications/data/protect-children-not-guns-report-2008.pdf

Be forewarned, it will make you angry, and the sheer volume of BS may be so egregious as to cause your tongue to work its way up through a sinus passage into your skull in order to strangle your brain just to ease the pain. Ok, maybe not, but it's pretty bad. My favorite bit has to be the full page picture of the little boy pointing a pistol at the camera gangsta style. I've seen all of the junk in this "report" debunked in several places in the past, but they keep trotting out the same old garbage. Let's face it, no matter what your agenda, FUD works.

On a mostly unrelated note, I just got my Kel-Tec PF9 that I ordered from my local dealer 3-4 weeks ago (Oh noes!!! Whut about the children?!?) I haven't taken it to the range yet, but I am very happy with the gun so far (though I knew the the length of pull would be long it is easily longer than anything else I own and I'm not sure I like that). This will likely be a summer pocket pistol and so far it seems perfectly suited for it. If anyone knows of any pitfalls I should look out for (mechanically, accessory-wise, etc) I would love to hear about it. Thanks!
they have it here and plenty of it. 50 round boxes of Federal Hydra, hi shok, etc.

shoots a Ruger Mark II.
I have seen/heard youTube stories about 200 yard shooting with a Ruger Mark 2 and the Mark 3. My shooting books ballistic tables for 22s only go up to 100 yards, and that is for a rifle. Without a scope I seem to only be able to be consistently accurate at around 50 yards.

But I can get lucky at 100 yards and can hit a huge target at 200 yards.

How far can any of you shoot a 22 pistol with consistent accuracy?

If any of you are having trouble finding hangun and .223 ammo, they have it here and plenty of it.....

They have a lot of the new 50 round boxes of HST (supposedly resered by federal for cops, please write Federal a nasty letter) in all calibers in 50 round boxes plus an assortment of other defensive handgun calibers.

I just bought 2 boxes of the federal HST in 147 grain 9mm and 147 grain 9mm +P, and am very pleased with them. I just bought another 2 boxes of 9mm 147 grain, and a box of 230 grain HST in 50 round boxes. They're a little expensive (about $32/ per 50, and I was getting them for $23 at the gun show) but it's good defensive ammo in 50 round boxes.
can shoot you at 400 yards.
I've been watching on YouTube many people shooting at great distances and thought I would give it a try with my Eddystone Model of 1917 30-06.

I got a gallon milk jug at 400 yards pretty easily but when it came to a 700 yard shot I didn't do so hot.

400 yard YouTube and some 700 yard pics. )
I am going to try a different rest next time and maybe some special cartridges, does anyone have ammo suggestions?

I also need a good spotting scope, I hate not knowing where I am hitting.
9th-Mar-2009 06:20 pm - Sorry, my dear side-lock
My muzzle loader heresy continues. I ended up passing on the percussion Kentucky Rifle. A fantastic deal on a Genesis came my way, and I couldn't pass it up.

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/muzzleloaders/genesis_specifications.asp
It's a really well-made pseudo-musket. It has a longer(28") barrel than my humble, workman-like, Tracker 209, and weighs more as well. It balances more like a civil war rifled musket, and for me, that's spiffy. The over-all quality of the Genesis gives me more confidence in touching off 150grn powder charges. 150grns pushing a big 45cal spitzer* is no joke. Compare it to a 45-70. I am sad that it doen't have a wood stock, or a proper side-lock, but the exposed hammer and forward balance give it a vintage feel that I do like.

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=6960824&page=1

Feb 25 2009

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/02/23/atlanta.police.sentencing/index.html

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A former police officer tearfully apologized Monday for his role in an elderly Atlanta woman's shooting death during a botched drug raid, and another told a judge he prays daily for the victim.

"I used to think I was a good person," ex-cop Gregg Junnier said before breaking down on the witness stand during a sentencing hearing in a federal courtroom in Atlanta, CNN affiliate WXIA reported.

Junnier and two other ex-officers, Arthur Tesler and Jason Smith, face prison in connection with the November 2006 drug raid that left 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston dead in a hail of gunfire.

Investigators later determined the raid was based on falsified paperwork stating that illegal drugs were present in the home. The killing prompted a major overhaul of the Atlanta police drug unit.

Smith, like Junnier, apologized during Monday's sentencing hearing. The proceedings were expected to resume Tuesday.
