Wal-Mart ammo observations...
After finishing some studying that occupied all my time, I finally opened the packages of ammo I bought at Wal-Mart. I've never before bought ammo from Wal-Mart, nor have I bought these specific "value packs", so I'm totally unfamiliar with them. I made the following observations:

Winchester White Box 9mm (USA9MMVP):
* Loose-packed ammo. (Big plus, I hate wasting stryofoam for something as trivial as holding cartridges. I dump them all into ammo cans anyway, so not having styrofoam or plastic is a plus for me. Less waste, less hassle in the dumping process.)
* Remarkably shiny and clean ammunition. Other WWB stuff I've bought in stryofoam-packed boxes of 50 has been "foggy". The brass and bullets just had a dark haze to them, not really tarnish, but I can't explain it better. This stuff is bright and shiny.
* Headstamps and primers look good. This certainly isn't "seconds" off the line. I'll see how well it performs soon enough.

Remington Golden Bullet Hollowpoint .22LRs
(Personally, I prefer the solid, 40gr bullets, but they only had 36gr HPs.)
* Again, loosepacked. I have no fingernails, so picking the cartridges out one-by-one from the plastic trays in CCI and Federal boxes is annoying. I usually slide the tray out of the box enough to expose 10 cartridges, then dump those ten into my hand. Having them loose-packed in the 550-round pack is very nice.
* The cartridges are very consistent compared to CCI Blazer and Federal American Eagle bulk-packs. Federal AE hollowpoints are off-center, vary per round, and the markings on the bullets just seem a bit "rough". The Remington ones are smooth, with sharp markings, consistent and centered hollows, etc. My previous experience with 200 rounds of the 40gr solid Rems was very satisfactory -- 200 rounds, no jams, no duds, and very good accuracy (about 1.5 MOA with a modified 10/22 on a bipod) at 100 yards. Much better than the Federal, which is a bit less accurate, and gives me frequent FTEs and the occasional FTF.

I think I'm going back to Wal-Mart this weekend with my friend...and I'm going to buy them out of WWB 9mm and Remington .22LR. Now, if only they had cheap .30-06, .308, and .223...

Welcome to White Box @ Wally World. The 9mm is a pretty good deal, has always shot well for me. Unfortunately, none of the other "value packs" are that much of a value (199.97 + tax for Winchester when I can get Federal for 190.00 shipped to my door? No.) and the 9mm is either loaded light or the 124 grain military ball I have now is hot as hell. One of these days I'll break out the chronograph and find out.

Loaded *way* light on the 9mm. It won't cycle my blowback carbines and pistols.

The Uzi laughs at the WWB - jams once or three times every 25 round mag with it.

I can go 2k rounds without any issue with Wolf, milspec 124, Magtec, or just about any other commercial 9mm loading.

What Make and model of Uzi do you have?

IMI Model A? Model B? Norinco? Vector? Semiauto, SBR, auto?

I'll probably take shit for this, but I see the Uzi the best (overall) firearms ever invented. (It's also one of my personal favorites.) ;-)

I shoot a lot of the .40SW WWB for USPSA stuff. It's decent ammo, if not a bit over-powered for target ammo. The 9mm is the only stuff that comes loosely packed. Everything else (.40SW, .38spl, and .45ACP) are all packed in styrofoam inserts. You might want to call ahead to find out if they have your ammo in stock. People, myself included, frequently buy them out and it takes a few days for them to restock.

As for 22LR, I can't stand the Remington stuff. It shoots for crap in my 10/22. I much prefer the Winchester Dynapoints. I started using it based on consensus on the Rimfire Central forums and it's shot better than anything I've tried except for Federal Gold Match which is about 5x as much.

Yup, the Remington stuff was definitely not my favorite. Honestly, the CCI is the only stuff that shoots well in my piece of crap .22. I picked up several thousand rounds of cheap .22 at Cabela's over the summer and I've had fabulous luck with that. The name escapes me right now.

I've never had them dirty the barrel to the point of needing cleaning intervention on the range itself. They've been consistent, accurate, and didn't fail once in the 200 rounds I put downrange the other week. The only failures that happened were obviously due to dirty magazines (rounds not feeding up from the rotary mags) that I hadn't cleaned in a year or so.

If they're dirty, it's no big deal to me. All .22s tend to be a bit on the dirty side for my tastes.

I've shot CCI Blazers, Federal American Eagle, Wolf Match Target, CCI Mini-Mags, CCI Stingers, CCI Velocitors, the Remington Golden Bullets, and a box of some Winchester stuff I don't rememember. So far, the least expensive stuff that I've shot that's consistent and reliable (no jams) has been the Rem stuff. I wish I knew where they printed the lot number on them...

The .45APC has been packed without styrofoam for 6 months now. Maybe your Wally-World had a big stock of them or doesn't sell much. I don't know about 10mm weak since I don't own one and shoot so little of .38 that my current stocks will last me another 100 years.

I wouldn't call it loosely packed because those suckers are so tight in there that the don't rattle. They use cardboard to space the rows and everything is neatly lined up and arranged.

they sell loose pack .45 ACP Value Packs at wallyworlds here in Houston.
Well, it's not loose like the 9mm, but it's layered in there without any styrofoam or other holders/separators.

The 9mm is too lightly loaded to cycle any of my blowback guns - means I don't buy it any more.

If it doesn't cycle the Uzis, I don't want it in the house.

It is good to know this. Wally-world 45APC cyles fine in my 1911's though. But it isn't as good a deal as the 9mm. Wolf is way cheaper if a bit smelly. There are plenty of other mail-order options cheaper than Wal-Mart too.

But there is a Wal-Mart EVERYWHERE except Chicago so that is nice for availablity.

I second the loose-pack opinion. Pulling .45 out of plastic trays works fine, but trying to get .22's out is a pain. Most of my .22's get shot out of my 10/22, which I feed from mags loaded with a Butler Creek loader. Dump in box o' cartridges, shake and turn the knob.

Believe it or not, I can manually load the Ruger 10/22 rotary magazines faster by hand than I can with the loader. I can load the high-cap mag I have (50rd piece-of-crap Ramline bought before the ban here) faster with the loader, but the rotary ones load up quick.

I was having feeding problems with the rotary mags, but I just read up on how to disassemble and clean them and will be trying them out soon. Hopefully they work better.

i use the WWB for my AR also. never had a problem with jam, ftf, fte or accuracy. but then, shooting open sites at 100, i'm usually happy to keep it around 2".
that and i figured it would be the best way to build up a supply of brass to reload for my rem700.

I've washed a box of Golden bullet through the ruger, and it seems to like it about as well as the rest of the stuff I've tried (winchester white box, Federal bulk pack, CCI mini mag hollow point)

As far as cleanliness, I'm finding that all 22 ammo is dirty. that's why I bought a boresnake, to try and keep the barrel clean.

I usually buy out the stock of WWB 9mm when I go to Walmart. It works in the only 9mm I own, it's relatively clean, and the price is right. Good stuff if it works for you.

I exclusively shoot the WWB 9mm, except for when I'm testing defensive ammo. I used to shoot S&B 9mm, but the Winchester stuff is easier to get at Wal Mart than mail ordering the S&B and the price is about the same. I also had a couple problems, FTE's, etc with the S&B.

The 9mm WWB value packs are (I think) now being made by S&B. I think they were formerly being manufactured by a company in Israel. I'm hearing reports from various sources that the new 9mm WWB won't make minor power factor (125,000) in most guns, so if you're going to use it to shoot competitively at any major match, fear the chrono.

Really? It says in big printing on the box "MADE IN USA". S&B's in the Czech Republic.

I don't doubt that Winchester off-shores some of their ammo production, but this stuff says it's made here. *shrugs*

I try to buy US-made stuff as much as possible, but for somethings (7.62x39mm, for example) it's just not worth it. The Russians can make x39 better than we can (I've heard major complaints about some Federal, Remington, etc. x39), and cheaper than we can -- they make gazillions of rounds per year.

But most of my ammo's US made, and it's quite reasonably priced. And I like it that way. :)
