To protect and serve the People of California.
Hey it works so well for gun shows.

California: Police Raid Car Enthusiast Gathering, Generate Revenue:

"If you're not into street racing, why would you need that?" Riverside Police Traffic Sergeant Skip Showalter asked an enthusiast during a similar crackdown last year. "Why would you want more power going to your car?"

Only cops should get modified engines.

Why would you ever need more than ten rounds in a pistol?

Um, they charged a group of car enthusiasts with street racing while parked?
Warrantless detention, search and interrogation?
Parking lots designated a racing venue?
Looks like the CHPs are just out to target victims to raise more tax revenue.  Plus it's a minority of the population with a hobby not understood by the average person beyond what they see in the movies.

My dad has a lot of buddies that grew up building hot rods as hobbies.  Some go for traditional stock parts or looks.  Some love to soup up the engines and make a rod like the fast cars they knew as kids.  A lot of the cost goes into chrome parts and high dollar paint jobs, with flames and pinstripes.  They get together at show and shines most weekends.  They may actually drive their beloved autos to the show or the dinner or where ever the club meets.  None of them would subject their cars to the rigors of street racing.  they might get a chip in the paint.

the look, the sounds, the stats on the power plants, history, and nostalgia drive these guys.  Street racing?  Most people with the money to spend on tricking out their cars also have the maturity and brains to stay away from it.

if they want to race go to the drag strip, but don't paint the car with a $10,000 paint job first.

Ban aftermarket mufflers made after 1986, I say.

Also, any car that goes over 55mph should require special paperwork. Why would you need a car that can go faster then the legal limit?

So firing off a belligerent profanity-laced retort without thinking first, then 'realizing' afterward what is obvious to everyone else ... is still considered 'thinking?'

Sweet.

And don't forget the added irony points of the icon.

Speed limits in California reach at least 70, so you may wanna bump that up 15 points :P

I, for one, am glad to see that there's no more violent crime in California. And glad to see that California cops are dedicated enough to find something else to do during this period of peace.

A little violation of constitutional rights is perfectly okay now that I've been protected from the dangers of car enthusiasts! Thank God the Riverside police force are such an efficient and well-deployed force - if they had used less than fifty police cruisers, some law-abiding citizens may have escaped their illegal detainment!

The report posted is a bit biased, and there is a lack of reputa ble sources reporting on the story. Because of that, it's hard to make out what actually happened.

That's one of the analogies I use to explain why "assault weapon" bans are dumb. I get the non-shooter to think of two identical cars. Then, I ask if a flame paint job or fuzzy dice on the rear-view affects how one of them performs. Of course, it doesn't. Then, I ask if it makes sense to dub a car an "assault vehicle", and ban it, for having painted flames and fuzzy dice. Of course, the non-shooter says that's stupid. I then point out that that's EXACTLY what an "AW" ban is. The light bulb goes on.

Now, we find out that the PRKalifornia actually DOES ban "assault cars". Aaarghhh!

I may have to steal this analogy and use it in discussions of my own. :)

Must be nice. I've tried that line of reasoning; no lightbulb. :(

It's our own damn fault. We've been drawing the comparisons for years.

"More cars kill people than guns."

"What do you mean, why would I need a full auto? Why would you need a turbocharger?"

I remember when I used to joke about the explosion of product-liability lawsuits in the late 80s "Oh geez, what next, fat people suing McDonald's for making them overweight?" as ludicrous and 'impossible' extreme example of that line of thinking.

Oops.

I am now terrified to say "Oh geez, what's next - the FedGov banning 200+ HP cars and Magnum-powered cartridges?"

Because noone would ever think of racing in an autocross event with their modified cars now would they?
Southern Pacific Division of the Sports Car Club of America.

Fucking jack booted thugs.

Remember, these assholes are there to protect you. Unless they are kicking in your door, then you're a target, even if they are a block or a mile off at the wrong address and they don't announce.
