Pics of the FAL Kit I Picked Up
http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85047

That's stage one. I've also picked up 10 NIW 20rd. mags from TAPCO for $100!!!

Next, the furniture...

I actually really like Tapco's new M249-ish SAW buttstock and pistol grip. Along with their T48 handguards and a squared off T48 trigger guard from DSAS, it would make for a damned nice looking FAL. I've got an Argentine kit FAL that I decked out with Israeli light barrel furniture that I like a lot, but it is rather on the heavy side.

I agree, but I think I'm going to skip the M249 stock in favor of something that keeps more in the T48 theme. The Penguin furniture is less than half the weight, too.

That's pretty cool.

From the pictures, the barrel looks ok to me. I used NevrDull to polish up my old side-by-side .410... that stuff works pretty nicely.

I'm sure you've done your research already, but just in case, you might check out Penguin Small Arms Works for US-made furniture.

Kit looks good considering the price. Do you plan to home-finish it (ie: in the oven), or do you think you'll send it off for something more like a Bear Coat or something. Have you considered chopping the barrel to around 18" for a shorty? Also, what receiver is everyone using these days? A couple years ago, the gear-logo Imbel was the big thing.

The receivers I've seen locally are generally either the Hesse or Imbel.

I've got a perfectly nice Century "R1A1 Sporter" on a Hesse that functions without a hitch and brought it home for far less than I could have built one for at current kit prices alone. Very nice chromed barrel that showed no signs of wear (like it should with the chrome) with parts in far better shape than I've seen come through on various parts kits lately, the STGs included.

For the price of a halfway decent STG kit, let alone receiver and compliance parts, I decided to go with a complete gun at a hefty discount from a dealer I give a lot of business to.

My completed beast, unless I decide to throw a fake flash hider on it.

Very nice. Yeah, I'm probably going to end up spending enough to buy a new, complete DSA, but it'll be a fun project. Plus I'll get a completely unique rifle tailored to my preferences.

that wallpaper goes with it well.
great condition! if you don't mind me asking, how much did it set you back? or, in other words, what would a good price be for it?

The wallpaper was here when I moved in. To change it would take money out of the mouths of my children.

That is, or the chambers thereof. :)

I paid $400 OTD as pictured, but I have a very good relationship with my dealer and bought a bunch of other stuff that week, including a new Springfield WW2-reissue 1911.

That's amasing! Wow.
I really like the Kalashnikovs you have, too.Saw the pics in the journal, but not sure- what make are they? Don't look chinese :)

I'm looking around for a good M1 kit, the prices have gone through the roof.

It's all in how you shop.

That's a Romanian SAR-1, one of the last regular 2003s where everything on it is right, and my "Idaho SAW", a Chinese SKS with bipod and high-cap mag.

Prices on just about all the kits have gone through the roof, unfortunately. There's only so many of them out there, and that supply is going down for just about everything we can have.

I'll probably send it off to be finished, not sure where yet. That's probably still a year off.

The barrel will definitely be somewhere in the 17"-19" range. It doesn't look like there's much of a performance difference, so the choice will probably be dictated by cosmetics. I'm leaning towards putting a muzzle break on it, so shorter is probably better-- I want this thing to be handier than my M1A.

Imbel type III's are still popular, but I'm in no rush, so I'm hoping to find a lighter Type I made in the US by Coonan. They're supposed to be as good as the Imbel, lighter, and cheaper.

Yeah, Penguin's the way to go. They just came out with a handgrip with the ergonomics of the SAW grip but without the serrations. It looks like a regular FAL grip but it's much more comfortable and gives a more AR-like grip angle.

I'll let you know how the Tapco lottery turns out on my end - just ordered a bunch of the 'used' steel Metric FAL mags.

If they're on par with what I've gotten before, I'll be pleased. It's hard to say no to $3.29 a magazine. :)

hahah i liked the posts on it and yeah it looks like a good kit for what you can get now. Now for somethin funny too. We had a guy looking for a kit similar to what you got but for a HK91 or cetme type rifle and we had one in an old plastic bag. Well the guy buys it looks at the parts and begins his build. He gets it all put together and IT'S FULL AUTO. has the bolt, all the parts the selector, everything. So he's got a full auto gun and doesn't know what to do. It was pretty wild. He's now trying to get a class 3 because he says it's awesome to shoot.

Tell him to take it apart NOW. He's holding a ten year trip to Club Fed.

You can't build a full auto gun for yourself since 1985.

Be glad you ordered when you did. Click the link above - they're now $199. :)

Same thing on all the surplus used mags I got - they came today with a catalog where they're almost twice as much as I paid.

I should have ordered more - at $3.29 a mag, it was hard to say no.
