Hope for your modern, domesticated Urbanite yet?
I saw this in the NYTimes a short time ago. Amazingly a pro-hunting article from this past Wednesday's Food & Dining section! Sounds like a great way to introduce more people to the shooting sports, to boot!

Damn. Now I want to pull out one of my Nagants and go hunt something...

    About that 1903A3
Looks like it's really a 1903A4 missing the scope mount.

The model number and serial number are offset correctly.

    The Bolt handle is correct.

    This is entertaining.

Any suggestions on a scope that won't look craptastic to mount on it?

Marlins are on sale on Friday and I'm contemplating a 795 vs. a 60. For general plinking and target shooting, does anyone have any preferences or recommendations? The 795 is probably about $100, the 60 is probably around $220.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Quicky Review of the Lee Zip Trim and Lee Universal 3 Jaw Chuck
I just bought a Lee Zip Trim and a Lee Universal 3 Jaw chuck. The zip trim is a hand power system for the lee cutter-case length guage-shell holder system. You either mount it to your bench or clamp it to a stable surface. The zip trim (using either a shell holder or the universal 3 jaw chuck) will spin the case so you can trim it to length. It is powered by pulling on a small handle like a lawnmower. I found using with shell holders that come with the case length guages very easy. Now as to using the 3 jaw chuck, don't bother. It is much fussier and more difficult to use than the shell holders.

If you are already using the Lee case cutter and case length guages to trim your cases for reloading, I definitely recommend it. But, don't bother buying the 3 jaw chuck. The chuck is unnecessary and useless.

Parts help for a Llama .45 Extractor
I need some serious help, my brethren.
I have been asked (and trusted!) by my favorite college professor to fix his ailing Llama .45ACP. This gun belonged to his father and has great sentimental value for him.
Here's the issue: the gun is basically a 1911 with an alloy frame. It is in good working order, except that it fails to extract, leaving the catridge case in the chamber.
The extractor is not the same round part as in the original 1911. Instead, it's a hinged piece that slots into the right-hand-side of the slide, and is pinned in with a roll pin.
I have not been able to fire the pistol yet to verify the symptom reported to me. Visually, the hook on the extractor appears intact, not broken or cracked, but it is very smooth and I suspect that it is just worn down.
Does anyone have a source for Llama parts?
He gave it to me because he knows that I will fix it even if I have to MAKE a replacement extractor with a hunk of 4130 and a set of files. But I'd rather not have to do that.
PLEASE help me out. It's not like I need brownie points with him, but I do want to give him his dad's gun back in working order.

Anyone know a source for a good replacement barrel for an Enfield No4 rifle? It doesn't have to be surplus, a new one would do nicely, and it's actually for a Gibbs Quest Extreme Carbine version of the Enfield.

I love this rifle and how it handles, but I'd really like to be able to hit something reliably and not keyhole past 30 yards. I'm doing the google search, but I'm completely new to even the concept of re-barreling a rifle and really don't even know what to look for.

Rest assured I am not going to try it on my own, especially since it will more than likely need to be cut down, but any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated.

For reference, and thanks again [info]bulldawg for the pic.

    Range Report, SIG SAUER Academy
Just finished my first class at SIG SAUER Academy this past weekend. This specific course offering was for Concealed Carry and was a two day class 8:30-5:00. We went to 6 each day to cover what was necessary. I have to say that I was extremely impressed with the facility, the classroom environment, range as well as the Staff. Highly professional outfit that does most of their training for LE however opens up courses for what they call "Responsible citizens" meaning you do not need to be LE or former military etc... which I think is great. Another observation was that for a Factory funded operation there was ZERO and I mean ZERO sales pitch to buy or even use SIG firearms. For those who are traveling or just interested they will gladly provide a SIG for use during the course however they make no sales pitch to any students. Students are offered reduced cost on future classes and I've already signed up for the next one that deals specifically with "low light". Their course offerings are extensive and span just about anything you can imagine from force on force to shotgun, rifle, IDPA, hand to hand. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to expand your skills.

The Path to a Well-Armed Wife
Long story short, I've discovered that buying guns for small, left-handed women is a difficult proposition (especially when you're married to one! =D). It was an extensive learning experience for both of us, but the results so far have been encouraging:

    Tiny wins, baby, tiny wins.
Yet another argument with an anti-2a. This once centering around the "well, I know it's legal, but nobody NEEEEEDS an [ar15/ak47/armament of choice here]. What's the problem with the govt restricting them?"

Oddly enough I thought up an actual retort at a time that it was relevant, not weeks afterward.

"Well nobody NEEEEDS to read Huck Finn, Farenheit 451, Orewell, or look at porn. What's the problem with the government banning those books? There's plenty of other ones to read..."

Yes, I know that nobody has used a copy of Jude the Obscure to hold up a liquor store, so the analogy isn't perfect, but the fallacy is about the logic, not the specifics.

    Hey Guns.....2 things...

First, does ANYBODY have any personal experience with this firearm? I think it's the coolest thing since self contained metallic cartridges, but I'm weird that way.....

    www.steinkamp-waffenbau.de/en/produkte.html

Second. I'm looking to do a bit of horse trading. I have a used, blued 4" Ruger Mk II Bull barrel .22. And a .22 Charter Arms AR-7 Pistol with 2 10 rounders and two pre ban 15 rounders for TRADE. (Not sale) I'm looking for a used Taurus 5" Stainless model 94 in .22, a used BRNO ZOM-451 strait pull .22 Rifle. Will also consider an Olympic arms .22 Wolverine, with wood stocks, or a 20GA Stoeger Outback II in the black and nickle finish.

    TN guns-in-bars law struck down
    Posted: Nov 20, 2009 2:32 PM EST Updated: Nov 20, 2009 2:32 PM EST
    ----------------------
NASHVILLE, TN (AP) - A Nashville judge has ruled a law that allows handguns in Tennessee bars and restaurants is unconstitutional.

Chancellor Claudia Bonnyman ruled Friday that the law, enacted earlier this year over the veto of Gov. Phil Bredesen, is "fraught with ambiguity."

She ruled in a suit brought by a group of Tennesseans, many of them restaurant owners. The law allowed handgun permit holders to take their weapons into places serving alcohol, providing the establishment makes more than 50 percent of its profits from food.

There was no immediate word from attorneys for the state about an appeal.

The measure took effect July 14. Thirty-seven states had similar legislation at the time.

    Kel-Tec Announces New .22WMR Handgun, the PMR-30
From the Cheaper Than Dirt! Blog

Kel-Tec today announced the newest gun to their lineup, the PMR-30 pistol chambered in .22WMR. The PMR-30 is a double stack semiautomatic pistol that has a 30 round magazine.

    From Their Press Release:

    Kel-Tec PMR-30

Kel-Tec To Unveil PMR-30 at 2010 SHOT show. Click image to view full size.
The PMR-30 is a light weight, full size pistol chambered for the flat-shooting .22Magnum cartridge (.22WMR). The PMR-30 operates on a unique hybrid
blowback/locked-breech system. This operation system allows for the use of a wide variety of ammunition as it seamlessly adjusts between locked breach and blowback
operation, depending on the pressure of the cartridge. It uses a double stack magazine of a new design that holds 30 rounds and fits completely in the grip of the pistol.
The trigger is a crisp single action with an over-travel stop. The manual safety is a thumb activated ambidextrous safety lever (up for SAFE, down for FIRE). The slide locks back after the last shot and a manual slide lock lever is also provided. The light, crisp trigger pull and fiber optic sights make the PMR-30 ideal for target shooting and hunting small game.

Slide and barrel are 4140 steel, frame is 7075 aluminum. Grip, slide cover, trigger, mag release, and safety levers are glass reinforced Nylon (Zytel), much like other Kel-Tec Pistols. Magazine is Also Zytel and holds 30 rounds, with round count ports. Other features include: dual opposing extractors for reliability, heel magazine release to aid in magazine retention, dovetailed aluminum front sight, Picatinny accessory rail under the barrel, Urethane recoil buffer, captive coaxial recoil springs. The barrel is
fluted for light weight and effective heat dissipation. PMR30 disassembles for cleaning by removal of a single pin.

    Expected Availability: Quarter 2, 2010
    Expected MSRP: $415
    Caliber: .22 Magnum (.22WMR)
    Barrel length 4.3”
    Length: 7.9”
    Height: 5.8”
    Grip Width: 1.1”
Max width, across safety levers: 1.3”
    Magazine capacity: 30 rounds
Trigger pull: 3.5 to 5 lbs
    Weight (no mag): 13.6 oz.
Muzzle Velocity (40 gr): 1230 fps
    Made in USA
More info will be available at the SHOT show 2010 Kel-Tec Booth (#2825)

    Kel-Tec PMR-30

It's really no surprise that Kel-Tec is finally releasing (or should I say, re-releasing?) the PMR-30. Swedish designer George Kellgren initially designed the Grendel P30 .22 Magnum autoloader. Now, it's been rehashed and re released as the Kel-Tec PMR-30.

Many of Kel-Tec's guns share an incredible number of similarities with Kellgren's Grendel designs. Comparing the Grendel P10 with the Kel-Tec P3AT for example one can see how the P10 was essentially a prototype for the now famous P3AT. Redesigning the Grendel P30 into the new PMR-30 seems only natural

The Grendel wasn't the first autoloader to fire the .22WMR. AMT (now sold by High Standard) designed a very elegant pistol for the cartridge back in the mid 1970s, the Automag II. In 2007 Excel Industries also released their own .22 Magnum pistol. Like the Automag II, the Excel MP-22 also uses a single stack magazine.

There's a reason that semiautomatic handguns chambered in .22 Magnum are rare. Engineering an autoloader for that cartridge is no easy feat. The .22WMR cartridge has some unique characteristics which make it difficult to work with in an autoloader. It was initially designed as a rifle cartridge, and as such is generally loaded with slow burning rifle powder. This causes the cartridge to develop a late peak pressure, which leads to the possibility of the case mouth expanding and jamming in the chamber.

    Grendel P30, Source Unkown

George Kellgren's Grendel P30, source unkown

The Grendel P30 utilized a fluted chamber to facilitate better extraction, while the engineers at AMT took a different approach. They drilled 18 holes at 90 degrees to the chamber, and then welded a larger sleeve around that to provide room for excess gasses to vent. No word yet on what approach the engineers at Kel-Tec in the P30 chamber design, though presumably they will use the same fluted chamber design as the Grendel.

The Grendel P30 also had a double stack Zytel plastic magazine, which the Kel-Tec P30 also appears to use.

Kellgren also designed a carbine model of the Grendel P30, designated the R31. Presumably we can look forward to Kel-Tec releasing a carbine companion to their new PMR-30 pistol sometime in the not too distant future.

    A Historical Question
Most modern handguns use the Browning Linkeless short-recoil operation, and most of them the barrel and slide lock up via a lug that locks into the ejection port.

I know the Browning HP was the first to use the Linkless cam, but it used 1911-style locking lugs milled into the frame.

The earliest gun I can think of that works like this is the Sig Sauer P220, but maybe you guys know better. Who was the first to come up with the really smart idea to just use the ejection port as a lock-up point?
