Contender Hornet
A fella I know has a carbine barrel for the Contender that he wants to sell me for $200. Its stainless, no sights, has a base on it, fits my blued fram just fine, and is in .22 Hornet. Anyone have any experience with the Hornet in a Contender? I have a 14" .223 barrel and while I know the Hornet isnt anything like the .223, the Hornet's appeal is that I can load it down to somewhere between a .22 LR and a .223..... any one have any experience in that? It seems like it would make a nice short-medium range gopher popper but I could probably get the same effect with a .22 or .17 Mag. I like the idea of being able to reload for it since I could, in theory, load some very mild loads for it that would be much quieter than a .223. It would also be a nice choice for popping turkeys in the head I would imagine. So, heres the question - if I have a .223 in a 14" is there any real advantage (other than just wanting it) to getting a carbine length .22 Hornet barrel? | | Friday, July 10th, 2009 | 11:03 pm [jb_27]

Epic bad idea http://www.ballerhouse.com/2008/01/31/n-range-indoor-shooting-system/Glad to hear it's got a steel backstop. Hope it can stop the full-power round you accidentally loaded. Hey, I bet your neighbor is just fine with you firing towards his or her house with nothing but a 2' wide piece of steel to stop your rounds. I bet your neighbor is totally confident that you won't simultaneously load a live round AND miss the backstop. | | Thursday, July 9th, 2009 | 4:32 am [stmachiavelli]

I've gotten rather fond of having a weapon on my hip...
Well my time in the sandbox is coming to an end, and I'll be returning to the state of California soon. I realize that with Heller and other recent decisions, gun laws are changing and I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advice about open carry in California. | | Monday, July 6th, 2009 | 10:35 pm [dwarven_brewer]

CZ Question
In my conitinuing quest for a new firearm, I've come across a nice little CZ SP-01 Tactical in .40. Cool, except it comes with high cap mags. Illegal (a felony to be precise) in my neck of the woods. Does anyone know if: A) 10 rounders are available for the above model? B) Standard CZ 75 magazines are interchangeable with this model? | | Sunday, July 5th, 2009 | 7:27 pm [mccaucasianghst]

TRAIN WRECK AHEAD: USE CAUTION
Pics and vids from the Tiger Valley Team Match! Surprisingly we managed to make the top 20...because two teams were too HIGH-SPEED to listen to the rules and got disqualified for safety violations. ( Embedded videos~! )Also this is apparently what a CAV-15 lower looks like after being run over by a truck: Pretty surprised when I saw it...definitely didn't expect it hold up that well (for those who don't know, they're 100% polymer lowers). Can't wait to get my pink one now Hopefully they'll be doing this again next year, with more organization...really needed more ROs, I was definitely surprised at the general lack of maturity and common sense from a lot of the teams, especially considering their backgrounds (many were SWAT and current/former military). | 12:19 am [dwarven_brewer]

First Lessons
This afternoon, after several accomplishments at home, I opted to make time for a range trip and ended up giving some impromptu first lessons to a brand spanking new shooter & friend of mine. Unexpected as they were, her first lessons were with a 4.25” barreled semi-auto, chambered in .45 ACP, shooting heavy factory loads (230grain)...and I can tell you is this much: A) I had her hitting center (black area) on a standard 25yard round target in under 25 rounds B) She quite enjoyed it and would like to do so again. Whether this is a credit to my own ability & skill as a teacher OR her own innate & as yet unrealized talent, I cannot say. For now, I’m going with a little bit from column A...and a little bit from column B. Prior to her arrival I did have one truly ‘epic’ fail. Having already put a 100+ rounds down range at this point, I reloaded my magazines, loaded the pistol, mentally checked the usual suspects, aimed. Fired and... "cocksucker!" Gah! Son of a motherless goat!"To my left, my ear protection lay, momentarily forgotten on the bench. It’s 5-6 hours later and my ears are still ringing as I write this. Gun Auction in Chicago Gun that killed Dillinger up for auction A Colt Army Special revolver used by East Chicago, Ind., police Capt. Timothy A. O'Neil to fatally shoot John Dillinger could be yours for what auctioneers say may be much more than their conservative $8,000 to $12,000 estimate. And this sentence from the article caught my eye: An image of the gun, owned by O'Neil's family, will be projected on a screen at auction because Chicago bans handguns and automatic weapons within city limits.Silly Chicago-ans... | 3:19 pm [x3n]

Taken from Newsday: Smugglers' powerful gunFriday, July 03, 2009 "Federal agents busted a drug-trafficking ring that distributed methamphetamine and cocaine from Mexico in Washington state and carried unusually powerful weaponry, injecting a dangerous new factor into drug crime in the region. A .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol, AK-47-type semi automatic assault rifle and 14 other weapons shown to reporters in Seattle were amoung 23 guns seized in Operation Arctic Chill. Also seized were 19 pounds of methamphetamine, a quarter-pound of cocaine, 22 veichles, $60,000 in cash, and 31 people were arrested. The Desert Eagle pistol can "blow a hole the size of a Mack truck through a person," said the regional chief of Immigration and Customs Enforcement." Hey AK Fans, Part 2...and etc.
Okay, okay- it's not really an AK, but close enough if you ask me: AMD-65 with 500 rnds of presumably-Wolf ammo (free shipping) for $545 to celebrate July 4th! For comparison, I bought the same gun from aimsurplus (which, item for item, is usually better than centerfire on pricing) back in April for $525 + $10 shipping...and 0 rounds of ammo. Speaking of aim, they've got another not-quite-an-AK that looks cool: TG-NDS-19 Underfolder, which visually reminds me a lot of the excellent Yugo M70AB underfolders, but a lot more sophisticated-looking (and twice the price!). Anybody know anything about these? ...and lastly, there are some stg-58s out there again. I already own one FAL, but was considering a new addition to my .308 family by buying a LAR-8 prior to this discovery. Since they're pretty close in cost, I'd like to know: how do the two compare, for those who have shot or owned both? Okay okay, one more thing: what are your favorite FFLs in the Oklahoma City area? I thought I remembered there being an online FFL search engine out there, but can't seem to find it right now...and I'm NOT paying for transfers at Gunworld (y'all who live out here know what I mean). STI?
With the Fourth rapidly approaching and as it appears incredibly unlikely that I will be able to make a trip to a local long gun range...I've been debating if I want to pick up a new handgun. To that end I've been eyeing an STI GP6, chambered in 9mm - not sure if other chambering s are available, in one of my local shop's cases. Has anyone here had experience with this weapon, gun firearm? How is STI as a manufacturer? What is the experience of the group regarding the overall quality of their weapons & customer service? | | Monday, June 29th, 2009 | 11:12 pm [sashok_privetov]

Question to the experts...
I read somewhere that M-14 has an absolutely incredible gas system, that allows to shoot different weight bullets without adjustment, as apposed to FN FAL, for example. The latter rifle rifle has an adjuster, that regulates the amount of gas to send down the gas tube, as do SVT-40 and Hakim. What makes the M-14 gas system so special, that it does not need an adjuster? As I remember, M1 Garand does not have one, and has trouble handling heavy bullets or slow powders. | | Sunday, June 28th, 2009 | 10:37 pm [tomcatshanger]

one handed wheel gun reload?
How would someone reload a revolver with one hand? I can find plenty of drills covering a semi-auto handgun, but none covering a wheel gun. Any ideas? | 10:47 pm [skreidle]

Gun laws in VA
"[B]eginning Wednesday, localities must attempt to sell guns they collect in buyback programs--except machine guns and sawed-off shotgun--to licensed dealers before destroying them. Opponents argued the new law defeats the purpose of the buyback programs, which give gun owners something for their unwanted weapon so authorities can get guns off the streets. Beginning Wednesday it also will be easier for gun owners to get a concealed carry permit. Legislators overrode Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's veto of a bill that will allow those applying for a permit to complete the required firearms training online or by video. Kaine objected because there was no way to prove the person who wants the permit is the one who completed the course." | 1:15 pm [arbat]

Light mount
I am trying to figure out how to mount a light on a Supernova with mag extension. I'd rather mount it underneath the extension - not on the side. (Besides, the Mesa Tactical's or Nordic Components' solutions with a rail seem a little too bulky.) Ideally, there would be some clamp for three tubes - barrel, mag, and light. And may be a sling mount on the side... Anyway, I figured since I can't find the ideal solution, I will have to compromise. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. | 8:31 am [dwarven_brewer]

Scope question
So, yesterday after a trip to the local House of Addicition(tm) ostensibly for my housemate to buy her first rifle, I left with a new shotgun. Now for the question, the previous owner had opted to scope this with, based upon my Google-fu, a Tasco Bantam. Personally I have no reason to scope a shotty and am left to wonder: What rifles firearms would this be best suited to and for what purpose (i.e. hunting, long range plinking, long range target, etc.)? | | Saturday, June 27th, 2009 | 10:38 pm [fervid_dryfire]

Hey, AK Fans...
Check it out: 75-round drums are back, at less-than-insane prices (I've seen them at gun shows and rip-off stores for $300-(gag)$500). I ordered two already; they'll go nicely with the Romanian one I bought for $90 three years ago. =P There were also some being sold by centerfire for $150 apiece (plus shipping) or for free if you bought an AMD-65, though I don't remember if those were Korean or not; they lasted less than a week, I think. I bet aim can't keep these in stock much longer either. Makes me wonder, though: with the surplus shortages and fears of future bans and all, combined with the fact that manufacturers clearly can make drums of cheap polymer construction, why am I not seeing any new 75- or (one can hope) 90-rounders made this way? Does nobody realize how much money they could probably make if they were the sole producer for that market? Or how about even just making steel ones domestically, for crying out loud? Thoughts? Vanguard?
. Anybody else hear get the Current channel? They have a show called Vanguard, where they tackle random issues in a documentary fashion. I'm watching an episode entitled "Fully Automatic America," which is almost over. They were somewhat fair for the most part(at least in the beginning), with a few glaring issues, and factual inaccuracies. The special starts out with the host and his crew in Somalia, showcasing how cheap weapons are there, and how 'it's easier to get guns then get food.' From there, they go to Knob Creek. Yeah... love the juxtaposition there. -.- A couple examples of inaccuracy early on, when the host goes to Knob Creek, he makes note of someone firing a .50 Barret, claiming that the .50BMG round is illegal to use on human beings in warfare(false, as far as I know), and that if the round were to fly by your head in a near-miss, the 'pressure wave' from the round's passage would 'tear your head clean off.' I'd normally just laugh at that... but then I think how many antis or people on the fence would hear something like that, gasp in horror, and accept it as truth. >.> From there, for the rest of the special, almost the entire second half of it, the crew heads to Camden, New Jersey, one of the worst places in the country to live. They make a big show of 'assault rifles' the police collect off the streets, at one point the host picks up an AR15 and declares; "The AR15, standard issue machinegun for the U.S. Marine Corps... THIS is the kind of firepower the Camden PD come up against on a daily basis!" My urge to hurl something at the TV was pretty strong at that point. He speaks to a community group trying to push for stronger gun laws in the area, and a particularly troll-like woman in the group mentions that gun laws are more relaxed in Philadelphia than Camden(???), and that their laws don't mean much when someone can just 'hop the bridge' and buy loads of guns in such a place. This argument gets brought up all the damned time, but my response is always the same; they're just creating their own problem. It's a fact that states with more relaxed gun laws are safer places to live than places with stricter laws, and until they quit dodging this fact, I'm going to continue to not give a crap about their whining that other people need to match THEIR laws. But though at times it seemed they were handling the issue in a relatively balanced fashion, their slant was evident near the end of the special, wherein the host asks who should be blamed for gun crime in the US; he mentions the gangsters actually committing the crimes just once, with the rest of the choices being lawful gun owners, gun manufacturers, and 'gun dealers who feel the law protects them from the consequences of their actions.' Yes, he actually said that. I probably shouldn't have expected better from this channel, especially after they aired the debates in the last election, with Twitter users giving live feedback. Silly me. . Current Mood: annoyed | | Friday, June 26th, 2009 | 5:42 pm [fervid_dryfire]

Another Enemy in the Field
Another posting from my GOA email: Eight Republicans Help Confirm a Hard-Core Gun Banner -- And how to keep Senators from "spinning" their support for gun control
Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert 8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151 Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408 http://www.gunowners.org
"Too much work [was] left undone. After a few sleepless nights, I wrote for myself a list of issues on which I needed to do more in the years ahead. One of those issues was global regulation of small arms." -- Harold Hongju Koh (2001)
Friday, June 26, 2009
Imagine that. The Senate confirmed this week, by a vote of 62-35, a gun banner who stays up at night thinking of ways to impose more gun control upon American citizens.
Harold Koh is that gun grabber, and he was confirmed yesterday to be the Legal Adviser at the State Department.
On Wednesday, Senate Republicans attempted to kill the Koh nomination with a filibuster -- until eight of them crossed the aisle to help Democrats confirm Koh.
The back-stabbing Senators are: Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Richard Lugar (R-IN), Mel Martinez (R-FL), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and George Voinovich (R-OH).
Once the filibuster was thwarted, Koh's nomination passed easily. The vote on final passage can be viewed at: http://tinyurl.com/m4m2f5
Koh is eager to assume his post at the State Department, having lamented that there is only so much that can be done from the outside to push gun control treaties, and that ultimately we need people like him in positions of power. The chief lawyer for the State Department is just the position someone like him needs to push more gun control through international treaties.
GOA will continue watching for any attempt by the Obama administration to foist an international gun control treaty upon the citizens of the U.S.
Please stay tuned.( More from the email: thoughts about health care and perverting it into an anti-gun vessel )Please feel free to discuss. Current Mood: disappointed |
