California Assembly voted to allow same-sex marriages
This was passed by both the assembly and the senate in 2005, but was vetoed by the governor. sadness.

"The legislation by Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) would make California the only state besides Massachusetts to sanction same-sex couples, but it is likely to be vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger."

It's disappointing and I certainly wish he would sign it into law. However, a voter passed initiative barred same-sex marriage and that can't be usurped through standard legislation. Short of a constitutional amendment (which would never pass) or court intervention on the voter-passed law, the current legislation would be challenged in court and it'd be struck down.

So, Schwarzenegger's hands are tied. Which doesn't mean, despite being as socially liberal (and generally gay-friendly) as he is, that he'd sign it into law even if he could. But I can't logically fault him for vetoing it, even if I'm pissed emotionally.

He could always sign it anyway for symbolic reasons and hope the court legalizes same-sex marriage (there's a current law suit at the Supreme Court), but considering there's already legal action taking place, getting involved in a lengthy and expensive lawsuit that the majority of the public would not be in support of seems completely void of pragmatism.
