[NY State only] SPECIAL ALERT - Call Gov. Patterson NOW!
Dear All,

I received this information in an email this morning from Marriage Equality NY e-mail: info (at) marriageequalityny (dot) org

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone or anywhere you want. Also feel free to link to this entry.

-Larry-

SPECIAL ALERT

GET INVOLVED- Gov. Patterson is polling support for his marriage decision as opposition takes legal action!

Gov. David Paterson told state agencies on May 14 that New York must recognize same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts, Canada and other places where they are legal.  The directive should provide gay couples with as many as 1,300 rights afforded to married heterosexuals, including the ability to collect health and pension benefits, being admitted as “close family” in a hospital room and transferring a business license.

On June 3rd, a Christian legal organization says it has sued to stop New York from recognizing same-sex marriages legally performed in other states.  The Alliance Defense Fund says it filed its lawsuit Tuesday in a court in the Bronx. Several Republican state senators are named as party to the suit. The Arizona-based legal group filing the lawsuit has intervened elsewhere in gay marriage and religious freedom cases.

WE MUST STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS NOW!

Governor Patterson is doing a poll on whether people support his decision.  Take 5 seconds to lodge your support, just call 1-518-474-8390.  You will talk to a live person from the Governor's office during business hours.

Just say "I support the Governor's position on same sex marriage," then give them your 5 digit (New York) zip code.

And, after doing that, join us for pride, for our annual wedding march in September (add it to your calendars), and donate so we can do more (like our "walk a mile in our shoes campaign" and our Albany event Monday of this week) to show these groups we will not accept anything short of equality!

Happy Pride!

Well, it sounds like all you need is a NY zip, right? Well, 12832 is one if anyone else wants to trick the pollsters.

And, for the record, it's super easy to call. Took me 6 seconds (I actually timed it).

14013 and 14225 are others, if people want to do it more than once in a row! ;D

This is ... foolish. Please, do *not* call repeatedly. Your opponents will have plenty of ammunition without being able to point to falsified or contaminated poll results. I mean, would you trust a poll that showed more respondents claiming a ZIP code than there are actual residents in that ZIP code?

Sacrificing your integrity to achieve your goals gives others a legitimate basis to question your motives. Don't give anyone *anything* to point at so they can say "being gay subverts democracy."

all the enthusiasm is awesome but probably the best thing non New York State people can do is pass it on to all their friends so that all concerned NY people can find out and call in

perhaps people could start passing this up on facebook too?

Have you tried posting this in a general NY community, such as newyorkers? I bet you would find a lot of support for this cause in that community.

sorry to spam, but I'm really interested in this effort!

The Myspace group is private, so I have to wait for the group's maintainer to approve me! We'll see if they get around to doing that.:>

Yes did them first [right after my own lj] and I also posted to the "Queens" community as well.

As I type this, I have about 7 replies on the [info]newyorkers and 1 on the [info]queensnyc. I also heard from people on my own LJ.

I think all told I have about 12 people that said they did it!

It's a nice cause, but is some informal poll that a politician who already supports same-sex marriage really that vital?

Good luck.

Thank you for your good wishes and support Without launching into a too lengthy discourse on New York State's contemporary history and politics, just let us say that yes it is VERY important.

The State of New York (as opposed to the vision of New York City as portrayed in the popular media) is not at all an unabashed land of liberal social policy goodness. Large parts of the State are very rural with struggling small to medium family farms; then there is a swath of depressed "rust-belt" cities; and lastly there are blue-collar "ethnic" enclaves especially in quasi-suburban areas around the larger cities (including NYC). All of this has added up to the Sate Government being split (maybe 60%/40%) with the majority being Republicans.

For the last twelve (12) years we had a conservative Republican Governor (George Pataki). While the State Assembly is controlled by the Democrats the State Senate is controlled by the Republicans, (hence the many many years of legislative posturing & gridlock). The Senate is in the hands of a cadre of entrench, long (self) serving leaders (for example Joseph Bruno the extremely powerful and openly homophobic/biphobic "majority leader" was first elected back in 1977) who not only dislike queers they aren't particularly fond on black people, Spanish people, uppity women's libbers, etc. etc., etc. And among the people who signed on to the lawsuit brought by Arizona's fundy Christian (Dominionist?) Alliance Defense Fund to block Governor Patterson's directive recognizing same-sex marriage are five (5) Republican legislators.

High moral values may be fine on Sunday in Church, but they cut no ice in the Albany's halls. This will be a long and expensive fight so Governor Patterson needs to be able to say that he has at least some sort of evidence that the people of the State of New York are with him on this.

As a political science student obsessed with elections and all that, I know all of that. My point is, I don't think an unscientific (or any, for that matter) poll is going to change the minds of those opposed to equal marriage rights. It's a nice gesture but it won't change anything.

Oh. Then sorry for the really simplistic explanation. You probably could have done a much better job on all of that than us.

Not that anyone here is privileged to know what they're thinking is in Albany, but it is our guess that is is more of a cover-your-ass type gesture. So that Governor Patterson's folks can say that they did ask and this is how the people of the state responded.

Anyway, what can we say? The Powers-That-Be in the NY State LGBT Community think it's important. So to hear is to obey.

I called! I used 14013 as the zip code.

Yay. I've gotten about 6 others to do it, as well.
