fic: "New Suit, Cufflinks, and a New Tie" by belmanoir
Title: New Suit, Cufflinks, and a New Tie
Author: [info]belmanoir
Pairing: Joe/Billy implied
Rating: R (for language) (like you thought there could be HCL fic without swearing)
Warnings: Uh, spoilers?
Word count: 334
Summary: Billy engages in a little self-sabotage for Joe.
Author's Notes: Set post-film. Unbeta'd, so sorry for any typos or run-on sentences.
Disclaimer: These characters are not mine, and I am making no money off this.

He doesn't take interview questions about Joe. He's being interviewed for Rolling Stone, biggest fucking deal of his career, and the bitch keeps asking why he didn't go to Joe's funeral. He smiles apologetically and says no comment every way he can think of, and when she won't stop, he says, softly, "Fuck off, cunt." Not because he's angry--he's not, he's feeling nauseous and thinking about the headlines--but because it's the only way he can think of to tell Joe all the shit he can't ever tell Joe again. It's not like he thinks Joe can hear him or anything. But he's still gotta say it.

Which is also why he didn't go to the funeral. He could have gone. It would have been easy. Billy fucking Hollywood owns a suit. Shit, he owns cufflinks. It might even have been fun in a fucked-up way, watching Joe's psycho bitch mom trying to pretend not to hate him in front of the cameras. He wouldn't even have had to fake the crying, and he would have looked like a sensitive guy, loyal buddy, blah blah fucking blah. But they were burying Joe in a suit. It wouldn't have been open coffin, no way to hide a fucking bullet hole in the forehead, not with Joe's hair, but Billy would have known. So. Joe Dick, buried in a suit. Embalmed, in a closed five thousand dollar steel coffin, with a fucking weeping angel on his tombstone. No burning to ash, no being eaten by maggots, the only thing Joe might have liked about it was how fucking grotesque it was. And the tabloids had a field day. "BILLY TALLENT BLOWS OFF BEST FRIEND'S FUNERAL," "BILLY TALLENT: FAIR WEATHER FRIEND," "BILLY TALLENT: HAS FAME MADE HIM COLD?" Joe would have loved it.

Billy went at night. He climbed over the chain-link cemetery fence. Joe's ripped-up army sweater caught on the top and finally bit the dust, totally unwearable now, which is when Billy actually almost started crying.

He spit on Joe's grave.

Oh, I love post-film fic. And this is really lovely--the spitting is just so them.

Thank you!! And I'm glad the spitting worked for you...I was thinking of having someone accuse Billy of spitting on Joe's grave (metaphorically) and then I was like..."in this band...would that actually be a bad thing?..."

And once again you knock it out of the park. I believe this so much. Just the total wrongness of Joe being all perfectly preserved, dressed up and closed in, with a fancy tombstone and a fancy coffin, and Billy not being able to deal with that at all. I can see it.

Thank you! I was worried about posting this because I don't really think I understand Billy's voice, so it is very reassuring to hear that it worked for you.

Seriously, though, what is with me and the angst this week?

Well, this one is Hard Core Logo. The angst really can't be avoided. And I don't think that your other stories this week were too terribly angsty. Sure they had their fabulous angsty moments. (mmm.... angst. nom nom nom) But other then this one they all ended happy.

Oh! I also meant to say how much I loved that Billy was wearing Joe's wonderful ripped up army sweater when he broke into the cemetery. It just makes so much sense coming after the issue with Joe being buried in a suit, because that army sweater was so Joe and what he was all about, and clearly whoever buried him didn't even care. When the sweater after so many years finally falls apart and becomes unwearable, and how that's when Billy almost starts crying. Perfect.

I love that sweater SO MUCH. It made me so happy when I learned it was Hugh Dillon's own sweater. *loves*

We never really hear about either of their families, but you have to figure that punk legends' moms don't exactly always get what their kids are about, and given that Joe's parents, well, raised Joe, I figure that goes extra for them...I apologize, Joe's mom, in case you are really cool.

You are right that all my other stories this week had happy endings, but the one with Ray's dad was WAY angstier than what I normally write. It was actually difficult for me to write, because I was stretching. Ask my betas! There was drama!

Oh, but the Ray's dad stuff was so perfect! I would have never guessed that it was drama causing to you. Really I think that this is all a clear sign that you should write more angst. *nods seriously* Or it is possible that my angst-loving self is saying that for purely selfish reasons.

actually, now i'm kind of tempted to write the fic where it's billy who steals joe's body...but i can't figure out what he would DO with it...

thank you! by the way, i just read your comment on my vault fic, and it gave me an interesting thought which i figured you probably wouldn't see because i know *i* never remember to check for replies to anonymous comments...but like, you mentioned fraser ruining his shoes, and it occured to me that fraser has a weird bond with his uniform, but he isn't CAREFUL with it, you know? like, he's always jumping into dumpsters in it and stuff. and it's kind of like how ray has a special bond with the riv but he drives it like it's totally expendable.

Embalmed, in a closed five thousand dollar steel coffin, with a fucking weeping angel on his tombstone.

That line made this absolutely perfect. Fucking weeping angel. It doesn't get more HCL than that.

thank you! yes, funerals in our society seem kind of wrong and sideshow grotesque to me generally, but when you put joe dick in that context, it just makes it all SO MUCH WORSE...
