Just.... NO
There's this new show on Turkish tv called 'Doctors' ('Doktorlar' if you want to look it up - and add dizi so it knows you mean the show) and it's GREY'S ANATOMY! I have no idea if they got permission or whatever to make their own version but it's there. The words are almost exactly the same (obviously in Turkish). I didn't like it though. There are no multi-cultural characters, the interns look way too young - I'm not even sure I'd say they don't look like they've finished college let alone all those years of medical school! McDreamy is more McCreepy! And the pace is just wrong. Everything is slow and static. I want the moving around, the good music... not slow piano stuff while "Meredith" does her voice over! Everyone but Izzy looks wrong. But I can't say that I think this actress can play Izzy, she just looked more like her than any of the characters looked like theirs.
Here's a pic from the official channel site:

So we have: Cristina, Alex, Izzy, George and Meredith.... ahem.... yes.

Here's a bigger one:

The chief at the back, McCreepy, Burke, Izzy, Meredith, Cristina, George and Alex.... bluergh!

I've just been looking at some Turkish forum and lots of Turkish fans seem to have watched GA on Digiturk and are not supportive of this version wither.

There's a legal idea called Intellectual Property, and if one can prove that something is based on something that was originally theirs, it's grounds for a lawsuit. Of course, suing internationally is always a pain in the butt, but it seems to be the Shonda/ABC/et al have a damn good case here if permission wasn't granted. This is horrible.

In Spain, they're going to make a show called MIR, that looks exactly like Grey's, but they've changed the leading character to a boy. They have the first years of internship, that boy hooking up with a resident (and they get caught too) and all that jazz. When I saw the commercial, I screamed: IT'S GREY'S ANATOMY IN SPANISH, OH NOES!!!

First we had a show like ER (which developed to House) and now we have GA, too. Isn't it great when our writers can't come up with a new idea? [/sarcasm]

its not uncommon for other countries to remake the shows with their own cast- considering language differences the lanaguages dont always match up so they just remake it all together. There is a desperate housewives of south america, i think. The cast looks NOTHING like you would expect them too.

[info]ihearttarget21 is right. There are various and sundry versions of "The Office" floating around outside of the UK where it originated. We have a version in the US, there's a German version, a French version, and I believe a Russian version. Each is targeted to the cultural differences of working in an office in the specific country. It sounds like exactly what they've done with this GA-like show.

Some people say imitation is a form of flattery. :)

This statement might sound a bit wierd, but looking at that photo the first thing I thought was, "They're all white!" I think it's great that the actual Grey's cast has people from all different backgrounds because it's actually realistic, and I don't know what the break-up of cultural backgrounds in Turkey is like, but that photo just looks so strange to me.

See that's where I am. Fine, remake the show for your country--the ABC "Ugly Betty" is itself a remake of the original series from Columbia, and there's eight other remakes in other countries besides, including Russia and Greece, and I won't go into all the reality series and game shows that have been and are still being translated and remade all over the world, Vas o No Vas--but is it still indicative of your own country's culture? I know characters are characters and plot is plot no matter what, no matter where. But something still has to be lost in translation. I would imagine that there are some things that the original American characters have done that just would not fly in Turkey. What happens then? Do you get to put your own more culturally-accurate spin on it, or is it just imitation, with reality held even more at arm's length to do the show as written?

Overall, it just doesn't bode well; in years to come will it just be two banks, three car companies, and eight TV series all over the world??

On another, note, that YouTube clip above is SO the pilot episode!! And kinda depressing to see that putting all that extra crap on the screen during a TV show is universal.

Halfway into the following clip ('cause there's so many more!) is "Cristina" getting all the unwanted hugs. And I think the last scene is "George" asking "Who here has no idea what they're doing?" and I think they all answer the equivalent of "Me!"

Acting wise....I have no comment.

I just watched a couple clips. I'm a little frightened as to why I seem to be able to make some sense of what they're saying (and not because I've memorized the GA scripts!).

A tad low budget, but what really struck me is how beautiful the hospital is from the outside, that's a nice building, and it's huge and spacious, not as overcrowded as an American hospital. Is that typical in Turkey?
