Tom Morello's Street Sweeper Social Club to Play FM 103.9's Third Thursday This Month
By Kelly Wilson in Show Announcements
Wednesday, Aug. 12 2009 @ 6:35AM

Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave's Tom Morello will bring his new band, Street Sweeper Social Club, to downtown Scottsdale Thursday, Aug. 20. The band
will perform during FM 103.9's monthly 3rd Thursday Block Party on Craftsman Court, across from Dos Gringos. The group, which also features Boots Riley, released its self-titled debut album earlier this summer and embarked on a two-month North American trek opening for Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction. The 11-song disc was produced by Morello and features Riley on vocals and Stanton Moore on drums.

"It's revolutionary party jams," Morello has said of the album. "It's got huge steamroller riffs combined with depth, charge, funk, while Boots unloads clip after clip of incendiary rhymes rich with satire and venom,"

The all-ages, free block party, which kicks off at 8 p.m., will also include local boys Weird is the New Cool and LA indie-rock outfit Great Northern. The latter features vocalist/guitarist Solon Bixler, formerly the guitarist for the Jared Leto-fronted 30 Seconds to Mars.

The fun begins at 8 p.m.

hey guys, long time no talk.

PART ONE
as a lot of people have guessed, the line up for GN has changed a bit.  davey is no longer with the band, he's currently playing with a band called everest, you can check them out on myspace
here.  mr michael is also not playing with great northern anymore (they threatened to change their name to "great "we motivate people to start a band of your own" northern :)" xD), but i didn't ask who he's playing with now.

as far as i can guess, rachel and solon recorded the album themselves, possibly with the help of friends, although being the incredible multi-instrumentalists they are, i'd've guessed they could do it all alone.  keyboardist marissa micik and drummer dusty rocherolle will be playing with them on tour, and they are still looking for a bass player.

PART TWO
not sure if everybody was aware, i forgot until i got reminded tuesday night, but Remind Me Where the Light Is is available on itunes right now for 5.99.  the hard copy is still not out until the 28th, but if you're impatient (like me), it is available on itunes now.  and guys, it is amazing.  i am so in love with it, no joke.

PART THREE
saturday, april 18th is record store day, and to celebrate both that and the release of RMWTLI, a select group of record stores will be offering a 7" of "Houses" and "For Weeks" (i don't know this song...) and a tote bag, FOR FREE.  the full list can be seen here:
http://eeniemeeniejapan.com/images/emr/records_stor_day.jpg.  i would guess this list is similar to the list of record stores that released the reissue of the Sleepy EP with the free tote, but i'm not sure.  i'm pretty sure one of the stores listed (culture clash) is one of my local record stores, and i will be calling them tomorrow (and probably e-mailing chris merrow, from the EM street team, tonight) to see if they are getting it.  if one of the names on the list is a name of a local store for you, i would call them and check it out.  i got the link from the miny moe blog, but i'm still not sure about it...  *ETA - talked to chris and it's a definite.  he just said you have to ask at the counter, they won't be on display or anything.  a list of where the other stores are located may be forthcoming, we'll have to see.

anyway, anyone going to the cleveland or columbus shows?  i'm planning on going to both, and i'm trying to get as many people as possible to come along.  they deserve a bigger crowd than 15 people.  <3

Even as we speak, sonic powerhouse Great Northern are hard at work in the studio, putting the final touches on the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2007 Trading Twilight for Daylight, released on "cool guy LA indie label" Eenie Meenie Records. Produced by Michael Patterson (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beck, Ladytron, Puff Daddy ) and Nick Jodoin, and mixed by Patterson, the new album will wrap recording by middle of November, with release slated for April 2009.

All songs on the upcoming set were written and performed by Great Northern. "For this record we've felt a bit like a changed band," says singer-keyboardist Rachel Stolte. "There's more darkness, and more urgency. On this record we try to express everything that's been accumulating through our time on tour and through our life experiences since the first one came out."

Great Northern did full North American tours four times during the last record cycle for Trading Twilight for Daylight, including a trek with the Gutter Twins. Trading Twilight for Daylight's 2007 Album of the Year lists include Live 105; Aaron Axelsen's Top 10 #1, KCRW ; Nic Harcourts Top 10 #7, FILTER magazine #9, and Under the Radar #10.

Co-founder Solon Bixler warns that the new album will not lack intensity, and will most decidedly differ from the band's first. "And," he says, "We hope the next will be different from this. We are constantly inspired by the evolution of the world and the art that surrounds it. It would be impossible to stay the same."

I've been meaning to mention that two bands that feature former members of Great Northern are on tour now... you should check them out , since if you're reading this you obviously have fantastic taste in music.

ALL SMILES features Jim Fairchild on guitar and vocals and they're touring with Conor Oberst.
(Solon plays on the incredible new All Smiles album, too, but, duh, he's not a former member like Jim is. ...you can buy this cd at these shows)
Danny from Menomena is playing drums on this tour so it's suuuuper awesome.

EVEREST features Davey Latter on drums and they're touring with Neil Young and Death Cab for Cutie.
I saw them the other night and it was one of the best shows I've been to this year.

Okay so, check it out!

confessions of a would-be hipster presents plastic snow feat. great northern

After months of toiling in secret and amassing a team of people far more talented than we'll ever be, Confessions of a Would-Be Hipster is proud to announce our holiday album Plastic Snow is out today.

Great Northern was kind enough to come into the studio with us and record an exclusive track, "This King." Despite being absolutely exhausted from a day of recording their next album they were one of the most charming groups I've ever met.

Ten dollars gets you their track. along with fifteen other local bands. All proceeds go to benefit Los Angeles' largest homeless shelter, Midnight Mission.

It's been over a year since Jazmyn and I started this community. Since April of 2007 we have grown from a few 30stm fans. into 40 members.

But lately not many people have posted and it's understandable. So I like to get everyones opinion.

Do you think, we should just let this place stay quiet till the next album/when they start touring, or should we have some other activities and such be posted from time to time?\

If there should post from time to time what should be posted?

Should mods post polls like "What's Your Favorite Song?" polls or something else?

If we are to post polls please suggest subjects of polls.

Of course, all posts will have to be Great Northern related. \
