This is a Grand National sweepstake, where instead of playing for money, we play for fanfic/art.
If you're asking 'what's The Grand National?', then:
The Grand National is a horse race. But not just any horse race - it's the greatest horse race on earth. Hosted at Aintree, it's 40 horses, thirty unique fences, hundreds of thousands of pounds lost in the course of less than ten minutes when the horse you've backed unseats its rider at the last. There are plenty of links in the sidebar where you'll find more than enough info on the event itself :).
And if you're thinking 'but I don't know anything about horses', then don't worry. I don't either, and I've never, ever, backed a winning horse. This is more about the joy of taking part in a sweepstake than the actual race itself.
How this will work:
Who Can Take Part
Anyone who fancies it, as long as they agree to the rest of the rules.
There are a maximum of 40 places available for this (that's the maximum number of horses racing), and it's first come, first served, so sign-up early.
What's Involved
If you sign up to take part, you are committing to potentially writing one drabble/ficlet (100-1000 words), or drawing something, for someone as a prize, between April 14th and May 14th. You'll be able to specify what you are/are not willing to write/draw in terms of fandoms, pairings, ratings etc.
And if you win, you get a drabble/ficlet/piece of art created specially for you by a fellow competitor of your choosing.
Sign-ups
If you want to take part, sign up in the sign up post. Include a list of what you'd be prepared to write/draw (fandoms, pairings, maximum rating, genres you normally tackle), and a note about what you'd like if you win.
Something like this would be ideal:
Prepared to write/draw (as applicable): Harry Potter (RL/NT, RL/LP, RL/SB, RL/MM, GW/HP, LL/NL); Dr Who (Ten/Rose, Nine/Rose, Jack/anyone); Red Dwarf (gen only); Bones (Bones/Brennan); CSI (Grissom/Sara); Firefly (Mal/Inara, Simon/Kaylee); Buffy (Xander/Anya, Willow/Oz, Willow/Tara). Maximum R-rated, gen, romance, rom com, angst or comedy.
If I win: I'd like some RL/NT romance or angst, or a Marauder-era prank fic, please.
If you only participate in one fandom, or write one pairing, don't worry - you're still welcome to take part.
How The Rest Will Work
Once the final list of all horses running has been released, all participants' names will be thrown into a hat, and drawn out randomly to assign them a horse, and a list of runners and their writers (or artists) will be posted.
Then, keeping a close eye on the form guide, we wait for the race (April 14th).
After the race, a list of where all the horses finished will be posted, and the people who drew the names of the top 5 horses are the winners.
The Prizes
The five winners get the priviledge of having a fic written/something drawn especially for them, choosing from the list of fellow participants whose horses did not finish in the top five.
They should go back to the sign-up list, and pick someone to write a fic that matches what they said they wanted in their sign-up post. Allocations of winner's prize fics/artwork will also be made on a first come, first served basis (ie, if another winner has already chosen the writer/artist you wanted, you'll have to choose someone else).
Prize fics or art should be posted between April 14th and May 14th.
Disclaimer
Those of you familiar with The Grand National will know that in the past, things have occasionally not run the smoothest, with the race failing to take place, only four horses finishing, the starter getting the start tape caught round people's faces etc, and so all rules are subject to change to accomodate such eventualities. Although fingers crossed that that's not necessary, eh?
