AboutGoogle + Whacking = Googlewhacking. The exciting web-searching game whereby you score by finding Google's "one"s, armed with only a pair of words.
And now it's on LJ! Here's what you need to do (these are the rules for this community. They vary from place to place on the web, but stick to these rules in order to play here):
*Take an unlikely combination of two words (not acronyms or pre-/suf-fix-es, actual words), both of which must be listed with the exact same spelling, including that instance of the word's pluralization, verb tense, prefixes and suffixes, hyphenization, et cetera, in
and enter them as a search string in Google's search engine, which will seek sites containing both words by default. The goal is to get a combination of two words which Google turns up only one site on. One site result. Remember that.
*Your score for this "whack" is based on the sum of results you'd get by searching these words individually. For instance, I enter "solipsistic xeriscape" into Google, and I get a result of one site (on 01/31/02 @1350hrs). I then add up the score by counting individual search results (9,810 for solipsistic and 20,900 for xeriscape) and my score is 30,710.
*Post the results of successful Googlewhacks in this community, at minumum:
the word combination,
your score,
the date and time of the search
the URL of the one site that came up in your search.
Be competitive, be creative. Please note that scoring here involves ADDING the totals, not multiplying, as some do elsewhere. And use only two words. No exception.
*Bonus! Bonus! It is very very rare that somebody might hit a "one" in which the word pair searched actually appear together. If you are fortunate enough to get a "one" with your words next to each other in the site, you get to double your score.
Note: Once you get a hit from a unique search string, Google will probably index it. So a successful whack is an ephemeral experience. That is why we wish you to specify date & time.

I have added to the interest list below some classic whacks, just to give you a sense of the strangeness and diversity of search pairs.
answers to stuff that's come up since this particular instance of the game started:
clarifications & reassertions of stuff already covered by ruleset:
- this game runs by the rules here, not "official" rules elsewhere
- total score is result of addition, not multiplication
- lexicons, wordlists, and the like do count as hits, whether they make or break a whack
- please type in the timestamp for your whack, don't forget the time zone
- allowing m-w.com as a second dictionary has come up and been considered. at this point dictionary.com is the only dictionary allowed.
- the words you select must appear in dictionary.com as-is. examples: if you use the plural form, the plural form entered into the search field must return a result, adding an s to a word that shows up doesn't qualify. hyphenated words count only if that hyphenated word as is returns a result from dictionary.com.
latest additions/clarifications/reassertations:
- (2002ish) results 1 - 1 of some other number
Searched the web for [18]faroese [19]suffragettes. Results 1 - 1 of about 6. Search took 0.12 seconds.
if you get a result like this, where only one result is displayed, it counts as one hit. the other results (last time i checked) are the same page located elsewhere in the same domain. if this behaviour of Google's changes, this rule may as well.
- (26jun03) www.google.com, not www.google.com.uk or other variants
- (30jun03) "+" prefixed to a search term in google (not the same thing as "+term" placed in quotes or "+" placed in quotes) only forces google to adhere (in cases where it by design does not) to simple googlewhackian mechanics; therefor the prefix "+" (sans quotes) is not disallowed, as this, in the applicable scenario (a whack containing one of google's ignored words) this would in fact instead preclude disallowing "+", or not including "+"
- (july03?) whacks comprising a single .pdf count *if* and only if the two search terms appear in google's translation of the .pdf (to html or text, whichever you use you should provide *in* the whack link as its url -- since these urls tend to be long please format them inside a link tag with the listing's title as its url text -- in the text of the document itself, and not just in google's header for it (this happens sometimes) where google will restate the words on which you were searching
(standard issue: spam, crossposts, empty intros & off-topics may be removed with or without warning - if you're not sure, it infrequently hurts to ask)
