I didn't realize I never posted the last part in my tutorial series, my apologies!

Program(s): Paint Shop Pro 9
Involves: Basic tips
Translatable: It's quite specific to PSP, but is translatable to most other programs.
Steps: 0 - It's just a list of tips.
Difficulty: Beginner

The main purpose of textures and brushes are to enhance your image, not completely distract from it. You want to attain a certain effect, not compromise the integrity of your base image. Because as I’ve continually said before you add textures, brushes or text you need a quality base image. When using certain textures or brushes however there are times when you create the base to match or fit them. Even on that occasion you still need to concentrate on the quality of that image, don’t let the brush or texture distract you.

NOTE: These do's, don'ts and tips are written based on the assumption you have read the previous tutorials. These tutorials are to be used as steps. By this point you should be somewhat more comfortable in the basics and tools of your Paint Shop Pro.

Program(s)+version: UnRar, HJSplit, VLC Player, Automator, NameMangler, EasyBatch, ViewIt
Involves: Learning about HD files' image quality and size, how to cap, batch conversion and renaming, sorting, uploading your caps to a server and adding those caps using Coppermine for sharing in a gallery as well as uploading zip files for sharing.
Translatable: No, Mac only.
Steps: A lot.
Difficulty: Moderate

There always seems to be fairly well done tutorials for various Windows programs and how to cap out there over the years, but when I switched over to Mac over a year ago it took me a while to find all the programs I use now because there was no guide like this to simply follow. I had to learn through trial and error and searching and searching for the program I wanted for each task. There was no step by step how-to. Now that I have a set method, I figured it would only seem reasonable to share.
So for anyone interested in switching to Mac, new to Macs, or for the occasional dual Mac-PC user, this is THE guide to all things screencapping. I'll try not to get too technical, I want this to be pretty easy to comprehend.

The Complete Guide-- WARNING: TEXT AND IMAGE HEAVY )

Please do let me know if you find anything confusing, or if you have more questions or problems and hopefully I can answer them!

This is my first tutorial. I decided to make an easy-to-follow tut on how to make animated icons because I can't count the amount of times I'd searched around for tutorials on how to make animated images when I wanted to learn how, only to discover nothing made any sense or I got lost along the way because the instructions were so confusing.

Today, we'll be making this icon:

Programmes: VirtualDub (for screencapping), Adobe Photoshop CS - CS2 and Adobe ImageReady.
Involves: How to screencap, how to import frames and images, how to crop, colour adjustment layers, tweening, how to optimise animated icons to fit 40K, how to set timing for icons.
Translatable: Probably not. :-(
Steps: For screencapping: 4 steps. For making the icon: 15 steps.
Difficulty: Actually really easy once you know how to do it. But I will go with Medium - Hard.
WARNING: THIS IS VERY IMAGE-HEAVY.

And away we go! )

I was making this icon and I thought I would make a tutorial for it because it's actually pretty simple.

Made in Photoshop:CS2. I'm pretty sure it's translatable to other programs, but there will be detailed instructions for Photoshop: CS2 in this tut.

Program: VLC (version 0.9.9--the newest version) + a bit of Windows Media Player (another similar program can be substituted)
Involves: automatic screencapping and setting preferences on a screencapping program
Translatable: No, it's just for VLC
Steps: 16-21 (depending on whether or not you choose to use Windows Media Player to help you at a specific part of the tutorial)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Because THIS TUTORIAL got so much response and VLC has released many new versions of VLC since I made that tutorial, I decided to download the newest version of VLC and do a new tutorial for everyone who has the newest version of VLC. This morning again we will go literally step-by-step as I teach you how to automatically screencap with VLC. (i.e., the computer does it for you.)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me; I'll try my best to answer them. (Or direct you to a place where you can find answers.)

Here is a repost of The Text Tutorial, requested by about a gazillion people. We will be going over the different methods of using text in Photoshop and in GIMP, effects you can use to make text look better or more readable, and you can download some of my favorite fonts here. :)

Apologies for any mistakes - please correct me if you find them - and I hope this helps!

Program(s)+version: Photoshop CS3, GIMP

From to to

Program(s)+version: Paint Shop Pro X2
Involves: Channel Mixer, Fill Layers, Colour Balance, the Hue/Saturation tool
Translatable: To any program that has a channel mixer.
Steps: 6 for both the B&W and Colour versions
Difficulty: Easy. There's a lot of explanation.

This tutorial covers the colouring that I used for this icon, but also has a short (er, well, for me) section on how the channel mixer works, for people who aren't familiar or comfortable with that tool. These exact numbers probably won't work on every image (or, more likely, any other image but this one), but the basic technique should translate no problem.

This is my West Wing screencap tutorial. My goal with this tutorial was to pass on a few tips and tricks I've found helpful when working with the very yellow screencaps of The West Wing that other people could adapt to their style of coloring.

This is going to be my first tutorial posted at this community and will cover black and white coloring with the Channel Mixer. Most of the time I don't get the Channel Mixer. It boogles my mind so I let it be but when it comes to Black and White images I've found nothing that surpasses it for ease of use and control over the result.

program: Photoshop 9
involves: Channel Mixer
translatable: I have no idea

Hello everyone!

This is not really an on-topic post in this community, but it has to do with icon/graphic making, so it's not that far out there ;) And I think this will interest a lot of you.

Me and [info]ohfreckle just opened a new community:

JOIN and/or Watch [info]icon_talk

[info]icon_talk is a place where you can discuss icons and graphic making in a friendly environment.

This is a discussion community for all kinds of graphics, icons, headers, wallpapers, techniques ect. Here you can chat with fellow icon/graphic makers about creating graphics and get to know each other better.

In short this is a community for those who share a common interest in icons and graphics.

This is NOT a rant/wank community, go to [info]iconrants for that.

Please read the rules in the profile page, BEFORE you post to find out what you're allowed to do, and what you're NOT allowed to do there.

Looking forward to see you there!

Program(s)+version: Photoshop CS3
Involves: Levels, Selective Colour, Curves
Translatable: Should work in other versions of PS, I think
Steps: It varies from one to another - the least is 7 steps, the most is 15
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced

These ideas can work for many dark or low-contrast images to help brighten them up, but I don't advise punching in exactly the same numbers I've used, because your results will depend on the base you're using. Instead, I'll try to explain what I was aiming for with each step, and you can adapt it to suit your own image.
