I've just joined this community and this is officially my first ever real livejournal post.

I found this clip on youtube with a review of the GWTW musical that also contains two snippets from the show. I must warn you because they really don't like it:

<lj-embed id="1" />

I'm disappointed by that because, even though I couldn't really imagine how they would make a musical out of it, i thought that it still would be good enough to be realized here in Germany, too.

What do you all think? Have you seen the musical already or are planning to see it? Is it really that awful?

Name: Insa
Age: 18
How old were you when you read the book:I think around 14
What was your first impression of the book:
This is really good.
Why did you decide to read the book:
I had seen the movie and loved it. I didn’t like the ending, though. My mother told me that there was a sequel. So I started reading „Scarlett“ first but didn’t understand much of it because it refered to so many thinks that were left out in the movie. So I had to read Gone With The Wind itself first.
How many times have you read the book now: Three times as a whole, but I’ve re-read certain parts millions of times.
How old were you when you first saw the movie: </b>
14
What was your first impression of the movie:
I wondered why there were always German texts explaining what happened in the war in between because it was an American movie (that was the only time I watched it in German because the dubbing is really awful). But apart from that I loved the movie.
Why did you decide to watch the movie: I was on christmas holiday and it was raining outside. So a friend and I decided to watch the re-run on TV that is always on during christmas-time.
How many times have you seen the movie now:
5-6
Who's your favorite character:
Rhett
Which costume of Scarlett's is your favorite: I like the one made out of curtains because it is so much more than just a dress. And green is my favorite color.
Favorite picture from the movie:
Rhett kneeling down to propose to Scarlett.
Do you have any gwtw memorabelia: No.

I was hesitant to read Donald McCaig's book Rhett Butler's People, even if it was officially sanctioned by Margaret Mitchell's estate. In the past I've had a problem with reading alleged sequels not written by the original authors and been burned. I have read Alexandra Ripley's Scarlett, and I thought it was okay, but I seem to remember it less and less fondly over the years. At any rate, my mother and a close family friend (two of the biggest GWTW buffs I know) both read it last month and gave it good reviews. So I got a brand spanking new copy from the library and read the first hundred pages over a couple days and then the last 400 pages last night. (I kind of got sucked in and couldn't go to sleep until I'd finished.) In short, I enjoyed the story, even though I wasn't in love with the writing style. I thought it was a plausible story of Rhett's history (and a what happened after the end of GWTW), and I do adore my dear Rhett.

Words cannot express how much I adore Rhett Butler, especially in the book (which I haven't read in a couple years). I think Clark Gable was wonderful as Rhett, but I love the book character even more. McCaig did a good job capturing Rhett's mischievous nature, but he also gave him a darkness. We see just how much he loved Scarlett and how much she wounded him while pining after Ashley. (Ashley's a twit in this book, too!) My heart broke for Rhett countless times while reading Rhett Butler's People. He hit rock bottom (in a dive in Scotland), but I got my happy ending (that I've been imagining ever since I first saw the movie and read the book) anyway. I loved that he came back to Tara and solved all Scarlett's problems, yet was powerless to save Belle at the end. It was wonderful to see how he and Scarlett needed each other and were willing to meet each other's needs. There was a passage partway through the book (I believe during their marriage) when Rhett met a couple selling apples and was saddened that they had silly little jokes and he didn't have any with Scarlett. At Tara at the end, after he came back, they had a silly joke with each other and I swear tears sprang to my eyes. SO CUTE!

Rhett's sister Rosemary was a prominent character in the book, and she was probably even more tragic than poor Rhett. I will admit that she basically annoyed me greatly for the first half of the book or so, but after she reconciled with her first husband John, she started to grow on me. Talk about a life fraught with tragedy, though! She was forced into a marriage by her domineering and uncaring father (after he'd nearly succeeded in making her believe Rhett hadn't loved her and was dead), then her daughter was killed during the siege of Charleston, nearly driving her husband out of his mind. After he went to join the army, she realized that she did love him and journeyed days and days through very dangerous territory, only to arrive hours after he died from his wounds. Then she was stranded in Tennessee with no way to get back to Charleston. Her second marriage (to the man she thought she'd loved since she was a girl) ended up being a travesty as her husband was the grand wizard for the KKK, and eventually committed suicide after being found guilty at a trial for his crimes. Finally she took her son to Tara, where she had to scrabble for a living with Scarlett and company, while not knowing if Rhett was safe. I suppose she got a happy ending by ending up with Ashley, but maybe a little peace and quiet was what she needed, even if Ashley is a wimpy whiner. At any rate, I liked her character (especially in the second part of the book), and I'm glad she was featured. The one thing that was a little weird was that she and Melanie became friends and wrote long letters to each other in which they unburdened their souls. Melanie seemed to be aware of Scarlett and Ashley's duplicity and it affected her more than I'd previously inferred from the book and the movie. Not that I blame Melanie for this, but it was a little unnerving to read her letter to Rosemary about marital relations with Ashley (which weren't graphic in the least, but still more than I'd ever expected to hear from Melanie!).

Another tragic character (pretty much all the characters were tragic) was Belle Watling. Her history (as the Butlers' overseer's daughter) was related and if Rhett hadn't chanced upon her begging in New Orleans, I think she would have died a young and broken woman. His ties to her stemmed from covering for a friend when Belle got pregnant as a young girl. I think he felt affection for her in his own way, but he didn't understand her and seemed blind to the love she felt for him. This must have been exceptionally difficult for her since he was so perceptive and good at reading people, though apparently not those closest to him. I think all Belle wanted was a family who loved her (and Rhett, too), but she had no love from her father or other family members. I'm so glad she reconciled with her son (who also played a prominent role), but in the end she still sought her father's love and approval, gaining neither and being killed by him (though he was admittedly trying to kill Rhett). Poor woman! At times she reminded me of an uneducated Jane Eyre. She tried to better herself so Rhett would love her, but to no avail, as he could love no woman but Scarlett. (This is where she differs from Jane, of course), but some of the passages about what a food she'd been and how he'd never love her really reminded me of my poor Jane when Edward was "engaged" to Blanche.

I suppose I shall stop babbling now, though I'm sure I could say lots more. The more I think about the book, the more I liked it. I'm glad I took the recommendations of my nearest and dearest and overcame my fear of "sequels". I don't think I'll go running out to read more, but I guess there are some good ones out there!

I was so swept back into GWTW that I watched the movie tonight. I LOVE IT! When people ask what my favorite movie is, I always say GWTW, and every time I watch it, any miniscule doubts that I could love another movie more are thrown out the window. (hee hee)
