Fanfic: Farewell Incense
Title: Farewell Incense
Author: me
Genre: Angst
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: Even if I did, my college closet doesn't have a door. My roommate would be oddly suspicious.
Warnings: Death Fic. Touchy, awkward subject and I don't think I covered it well. But I urge others to try to write their own because I want to see other peoples interpretations.

It seemed like a dream but it was too horrible, a nightmare. They hadn’t seen it coming, how could they have? The car had come screeching through the intersection and had smashed into the right side of their van, the side Golf had been sleeping on.

Mike woke up in the hospital, a few cuts and bruises and his left arm in a sling, but Golf was not with him. A nurse came into the room to check on him and he asked where his brother was. The nurse looked at him sadly but didn’t say anything. Each person that came into the room he asked the same question to but no one gave him an answer. Eventually their manager came to see him and he asked, “where’s Golf?” He received the same look and a simple answer that he didn’t want, “he didn’t make it.” At first it didn’t sink in, wouldn’t, and he asked again. Their manager placed his hand on Mike’s good shoulder and tears started to roll freely down his cheeks.

“He didn’t make it,” Mike whispered. As he said it reality set in fast and he couldn’t stop his body from trembling violently.

“Do you want me to----”

“Go away!” Mike yelled, successfully scaring their manager and getting him out of the room. Once he was gone his grief gripped him entirely and his body crumpled.

Empty, he was empty. Devoid of emotions, they had leaked out of him while he cried in the hospital. He hadn’t cried since then, his family falling apart around him but he was already broken. His tether to reality was gone, his rock was gone. Half of him was gone. He had stopped talking, keeping himself locked in his bed room. He woke up in the mornings wondering where the other warm body was in the bed. It had rained a few days ago and he sat in it for hours. His clothes had gotten soaked through and he was probably going to end up sick but he didn’t care. The sky had been crying because he couldn’t anymore.

The day of the funeral was the most unreal experience of his life and if he had been forced to do anything he would have lost it. Instead he hung around the back and waited for the whole thing to be over. Once the people had left and he was alone in the yard he walked up towards the front where the incense was burning. He looked at the pot full of gray sand and the smoking sticks and pulled one out of the box on the table. He lit it using a match and as he held it in between his palms to pray he felt what few tears he had rush to the corners of his eyes and fall down his face. As he put his incense in the pot he wiped the tears away with his other hand. As he turned to go back into the house he almost thought he saw Golf sitting in one of the folding chairs that were still set up. He smiled at him and as Mike blinked he was gone.
