| Fairytale Cupboard Review! |
[Oct. 15th, 2009|09:09 pm] |
Claire Massey has very kindly reviewed the 2009 Fall Issue! Thanks to snowy_owlet for the link.
She begins,
I decided to treat myself last night, so I curled up in a shawl in my big old armchair, laptop on knee, whisky in hand, and window open just enough so I could breathe the crisp autumn night air and I read the latest online issue of Goblin Fruit...
I can't begin to say how happy I am to have someone undertake those kinds of preparation before reading an issue, treating it like... Well, a treat. Thank you, Claire. |

| Fall 2009 Issue of Goblin Fruit is Live! |
[Oct. 12th, 2009|03:54 pm] |
And what an issue it is.
Clearly we're holing up for the winter with this issue; we offer up to you a well-laden table heaving beneath the weight of no fewer than twenty-six poems! Go forth and feast on work by Jacqueline West, Erik Amundsen ( cucumberseed), Sonya Taaffe ( sovay), Susannah Mandel, Joanna Gardner, Paul Christian Stevens, Marcie Tentchoff ( mtentchoff), Jennifer Lawrence, Marcelle Kasprowicz, Joshua Gage ( hooks_and_books), Shweta Narayan ( shweta_narayan), Rosalind Casey, Michelle Fee, Virginia Mohlere, Megan Arkenberg, Tori Truslow ( amagiclantern), Mari Ness ( mariness), Rose Lemberg ( grayrose76), Elizbeth Lee, Jaime Lee Moyer ( stillnotbored), Mike Allen ( time_shark), Neile Graham ( neile), Daniel Rabuzzi, and J. Mark Hauer.
This issue features the beautiful art of Roseau, whom Oliver Hunter recruited to provide our cover image and header. As you can tell, her work is amazing, and you should definitely check more of it out!
For those of you who like to skip past the Note from the Editors and leap straight into the poetry, please be aware that two very important things are happening with this issue:
1) We are swapping 'zines with Mike Allen for an issue, and reading submissions until November 9. 2) During that time, and until January 9, 2010, Goblin Fruit will be closed to regular submissions.
Hopefully this will mean the end of us exceeding the 5-week mark in responding to your submissions. It will also give us the time to fine-tune all the exciting projects we have for next year!
We do hope you enjoy it, and hunger for your thoughts. Mm, delicious thoughts, to braise in red wine or mull by moonlight... |

| Fall 2009 Issue Delayed |
[Oct. 9th, 2009|09:03 am] |
Dear readers,
It's with great regret that we announce a delay in the proceedings. Usually the new issue would launch today, but events beyond our control have decreed that Monday, October 12 is a likelier target. We apologise to those waiting for their poems to appear and thank you all very much for your patience.
We would, however, suggest that you make use of this extra time to brace yourselves for what is an unrelentingly, unrepentantly disturbing issue.
Thank you,
Amal and Jess |

| Goblin Fruit/Mythic Delirium swap |
[Sep. 26th, 2009|12:12 pm] |
Ha! Once again, I sneakily preempt the Goblin Queens.
From Oct. 9 to Nov. 9, I will be reading poetry submissions for Goblin Fruit, and Amal El-Mohtar and Jessica Wick ( tithenai & mer_moon) will be reading poetry submissions for Mythic Delirium.
To submit work to Amal and Jess for consideration for Mythic Delirium during that time frame, use the address goblindelirium@gmail.com.
To submit work to me for consideration for Goblin Fruit during that time frame, use the address mythicfruit@gmail.com.
The respective guidelines for each publication still apply in terms of what's being sought.

Hello, folklings!
emilytheslayer of We Have Thumbs is responsible for the existence of the first-ever podcast interview with Jess and I! Recorded in the graciously loaned hotel room of ellen_kushner, we talk about the intricacies of our editorial process for Goblin Fruit, the Secret of How We Met, what we think of Gmail vs. Hotmail, E-submissions, Persephone and mermaids, XKCD, how we plan to take over the world and so on. Do give it a listen! And DO subscribe to emilytheslayer's podcast, because she is AWESOME and a wonderful interviewer. We had so much fun doing this, frequently forgetting it was actually an interview and just having a great time. |

| Shweta Narayan on Prose, Poetry, and Prose Poetry |
[Jul. 23rd, 2009|11:53 am] |
shweta_narayan, a frequent contributor to Goblin Fruit, has initiated a wonderful discussion of poetry and prose on her journal which is well worth perusing. Taking up hooks_and_books' thoughts on samhenderson's Rhysling-nominated "Hungry: Some Ghost Stories", she considers his distinctions between poetry and prose as consequences, rather than causes, of essential differences in creative endeavours.
It's all very cool -- and as samhenderson said in a comment, I have the odd sensation of someone opening up my skull, taking out a disordered mess of embroidery floss, neatly untangling the knots, sorting it by color, popping it back in my brainpan and deftly screwing the top of my cranium back on again.
Go forth and be trepanned! |

| Summer 2009 Issue is Live + Chapbook for Purchase |
[Jul. 16th, 2009|11:50 am] |
First, though it's been up since July 9th, I finally have a moment to say that The Summer 2009 Issue of Goblin Fruit is live! Peruse poems by Mary Alexandra Agner, Karen Berry, neile (Neile Graham), alankria (Alex Dally MacFarlane), shweta_narayan, Gale Acuff, csecooney, hooks_and_books (Joshua Gage), Thomas Zimmerman, Alexis Vergalla, Anna Renz, Jane Yolen, Patricia Roy, handful_ofdust (Gemma Files), asakiyume (Francesca Forrest), Delbert Gardner and Anna Sykora. We also have a Feature focusing on Nicole Kornher-Stace ( wirewalking), our very own changeling-rearing, mead-brewing, brownie-baking, corset-wearing crossroad-hauntress extraordinaire.
I began my morning being completely bowled over by seajules' amazingly thorough and insightful review of the Summer Issue. I always melt a little when anyone comments on what Jess and I try to do as editors; she's pretty much got it in one. Thank you so much, Jules.
Readercon reports ARE coming, honest, for real and for true, and with pictures, even, but having mer_moon actually HERE with me makes me rather reluctant to talk about the awesomeness we shared among friends-who-feel-like-family, since it would take away from the time we actually get to spend together. Even now she's waiting for me with sevenravens downstairs, and we are to have sushi! So I shall make this brief.
IN brief: remember this?

It is now available for purchase online! For the low low price of $7 USD, which includes international shipping. There is signed stock while supplies last -- we couldn't QUITE wrangle poor Nicole's wrist into signing them all at Readercon, but she made a valiant effort.
Only 100 were printed for sale, and only 50 are currently available via PayPal, so make sure to get yours swiftly. Look at our barrow-lad. He'll tell you true.

| Sooper Seekrit Readercon Project Revealed! |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|03:45 pm] |
(cross-posted, apologies if you're seeing it twice)
Here it is.
So I lied a little bit. By omission. See, the Launch Party at Readercon isn't only for the Summer 2009 issue. It is also for the following:

To accompany the Summer 2009 issue, we're launching the first in what will become a series of small-run chapbooks put out by Goblin Fruit, called Fresh from the Vine.
Demon Lovers and Other Difficulties presents the enigmatic work of Nicole Kornher-Stace ( wirewalking), this issue's Featured poet. It gathers all the poems you'll find in her Feature with illustrations by Oliver Hunter, as well as the addition of a dual-voice poem written with C.S.E. Cooney ( csecooney). It will be available for the special price of $5 US at Readercon; prices may increase slightly after that to accommodate shipping and the vagaries of internet-payment. All proceeds from it go directly back into Goblin Fruit, to pay future contributors and finance the next chapbook.
There are only 100 copies available; online purchase will be possible after Readercon, to make sure we know how many we have.
Guys -- it's gorgeous. It's so gorgeous I want to marry it. In spite of the Difficulties.
With great thanks to two Mikes, time_shark and yagathai, for laying out and proofing it respectively, and of course to wirewalking and csecooney for sharing their incredible work with us! |

| READERCON: Goblin Fruit launch party + joint reading with Mythic Delirium |
[Jul. 6th, 2009|10:10 am] |
(cross-posted from my LJ, apologies if you're seeing it twice!)
Oye, oye! In spite of concerned complaints which have been handily answered and then apologised for with good words well spoken, work on the Summer 2009 issue of Goblin Fruit proceeds apace -- as well as work on Goblin Fruit presence at Readercon. To whit:
- You are cordially invited to witness the launching of the Summer issue and participate in Attendant Festivities on Thursday, July 9th, at 10:00 PM, in our as-yet-undisclosed hotel room. Feel free to wander in from 9:00 on. There will be home-made apple-mead courtesy of wirewalking, Goblin Jam (and possibly poemic cookies) courtesy of yuki_onna, occasional fairy songs and harp musics by sevenravens and myself, and many urgings to read out poetry -- as well as a heretofore Seekrit Thing that I hope (barring time_shark's unfortunate tendency to overenthusiastic journalism) to announce later today.
- There will be a joint Goblin Fruit / Mythic Delirium reading in the Vermont Room on Friday at 2:00 PM. I really hope to see many of you there! The time-slot isn't ideal -- time_shark informs me that the bulk of con-goers arrive Friday afternoon -- but I live in hope of finding a full room of faces I hope to connect to names.
There are possibilities of Fabulous Prizes in Store for attendees (and we do good prizes, baby). Please do holler if you think you can make it to either or both of those! |

To the exceptionally patient people who submit poetry to us,
We're sorry. We have been deluged with submissions and as a result have fallen behind our 5-week response time with some of you. We are not permanently changing our response times as yet -- we are committed to 5-week turnaround -- but we want to apologise to those of you who've been waiting longer, as well as to assure you that we're working on it.
Best,
Amal and Jess |

Hello, fellow folklings of the Fruit,
Who among you is coming to Readercon? More specifically, who among you is a Goblin Fruit contributor (past, present, or future!) coming to Readercon? We're putting together a Reading, you see, and this information would be helpful so that we don't go knockin' 'round yo' doors at the hotel in an attempt to scrounge you up at the last minute. Also helpful would be knowing what your preference as to time / day is -- the toothsome Mr. time_shark mentioned in passing that Sunday morning-ish might end up being the time. So if any of you are panelists with obligations, please let me know?
I'd also love to know how many of you would be interested in attending a reading if you yourselves weren't reading, to get a sense of scale / space. Those of you who attended our nifty Wiscon reading last year may recall that there are ... Unusual, shall we say, prizes in the ... Er, offing.
Also -- just to throw this out there -- the keen among you may have noticed that July 9th, which is the launchdate of the Summer Issue, is also the first day of Readercon. Freakouts have been had. We're not entirely decided yet if we're going to attempt to launch early (wow, I can hear mer_moon laughing three time zones away!), congregate a bunch of people around us to witness the Launch (traditionally there is glass-clinking and imbibing of liquids) or hide away in the depths of our hotel room and furiously correct typos until zero hour, at which point we would emerge blinking and raucous into the conful fray. Thoughts and encouragement would be appreciated! |

| Rhysling Review Finished! |
[May. 6th, 2009|01:27 pm] |
I wanted to let anyone interested know that I have finally finished my poem-by-poem review of the available Rhysling Award Nominated Poems, including all twelve from Goblin Fruit. Many of you have been following and participating in the discussion, and I thank you tremendously, and hope that you continue to comment. I also hope others will join in the conversation and let me know their thoughts.
I look forward to the whole anthology, but to get the conversation rolling, check out the post here. |

I know this was already announced, but I thought I'd let everyone know that I've finished my poem by poem review of the body of Goblin Fruit. I have not attempted to review the feature, nor the readings, but those may happen in the future. The review begins here and goes on for two more posts. I would LOVE to hear everyone's comments about the issue, and really get some discussion going, especially on poetic craft. Let me know your thoughts!

To gather these up in one place...
time_shark has very kindly and thoroughly reviewed the Spring 2009 issue here.
amagiclantern offers her thoughts about the issue here.
hooks_and_books is offering a very comprehensive poem-by-poem review in two parts, with the first one being here, and he's looking for discussion, so go forth and provide it!
If you guys have caught any others that I've missed, let me know in comments and I'll amend this post accordingly. |

| Spring 2009 Issue of Goblin Fruit is live! |
[Apr. 10th, 2009|12:08 pm] |
It's LIVE. This is our third anniversary issue, featuring fabulous fantastical poetry by Carla Martin-Wood, csecooney (Claire Cooney), Ruby Katigbak, Magaret Bashaar, sovay (Sonya Taaffe), splinister (Maura McHugh), Thomas Zimmerman, Peg Aloi, Neile Graham, Rosalind Casey, wirewalking (Nicole Kornher-Stace), M. Deegear, Susan Slaviero, Kurt Kirchmeier, and Liz Bourke. We've also got a Feature on kythiaranos (Jennifer Crow), which includes an interview and six gorgeous new poems.
In addition to all of the above we have -- wait for it, wait for it -- we haaave -- drumroll please -- we HAVE --- ahemahemahem!
Launched the Mischief.
The Mischief is intended to be a catch-all multimedia playground. Our plans for it will unfold in haphazard fits and starts, but for now please go and enjoy the offerings therein as a side-dish to your regularly scheduled poetic fare!
Also -- I have it on good authority that a certain chronological fish with very sharp teeth is intending to do an INSTA-review of the issue, so watch his space. He's done it! And, er, before I posted! That pre-empting poetry devil of a time_shark does it again, reviewing the Spring 2009 issue here. Enjoy!
And if you want to write any reviews yourselves, or just share your thoughts about certain pieces, let us know what you think of the Mischief -- please do! More stuff will go up in the next few weeks, so keep checking back. There will be another trailer, a Reading List of Sorts, and Moar Stuff.
I leave you with the first trailer, which I can't stop watching, courtesy of sevenravens magical boyfriend. The song is Oliver Hunter's rendition of Terri Windling's "The Night Journey", which Terri graciously allowed us to reprint in our Summer 2008 issue. Please feel free to link and embed it widely, and rate it if you feel moved to!
Go by coombe, by candlelight, and have a beautiful weekend. |

| Discussions and Dissections: National Poetry Month offerings and Joshua Gage on Rhysling Nominees |
[Apr. 4th, 2009|02:11 pm] |
So there are lots of things going on that I'd like to point you guys towards in your no doubt ongoing quest for delicious poetry:
stillnotbored is posting links to poems that have taken her fancy for every day in April; snakey is doing the same, as are bifemmefatale and vita_ganieda.
shadesong is doing a Month of Myth where she writes a story and/or poem a day.
In addition, if some of you guys are like me and missed the Nine Things About Oracles meme, born of elisem's jewellery and papersky's response to it, I heartily encourage you to peruse the links found herein. Be careful; you may not surface for a while.
In this post, hooks_and_books lists all the Rhysling nominees, indicating his intention to read through as many of them as he can online and comment on the construction and effect of each. In this, this, and this post, he's implementing that intention. It's a huge project, and I think his effort should be applauded and engaged with whether or not you agree with his assessments.
Please post in comments if you know of any I haven't listed, and I'll update as time allows -- or, feel free to post your own links to poems for April as Poetry Month! Let's wash the world with words to welcome the spring. |
