CD Update [Mar. 25th, 2004|10:32 pm]

From Ricky:

Just got back from the printers, have picked out the paper quality etc. She liked the graphics and I went for the best of everything for the first run.

James is in Sydney, when he gets back Monday we're dropping all the audio off to get burnt.....this little project has ended up costing a bit of money, but I'll be glad when it's out of the way and we can make another CD.

I think I have the cd production system pretty much under control. The studio I have got to do the art printing seems to be ideal for boutique runs of high quality covers. In short runs it is expensive, but the quality is really much better.

Hopefully everyone will be happy and we can move on to putting out more cds.

Any activity on the CD hasn't stopped me from editing the latest womad story, of which one big thread is meeting the touaregs and the cd project, which is another site in itself.....I still can't understand how it actually happened, but it did and they were really amazing people. I'll never forget them.

And I think it will be a while before they get over meeting myself and some of the crew :-)

Update 03-09-04 [Mar. 9th, 2004|07:04 pm]

From Ricky:

The Womad festival, the Touaregs, the cd launch, meeting Gilberto Gil (and more to the point, his band)... It has been a huge few days, I am a bit overwhelmed, but it was all a huge success I think. The Touaregs were completely enigmatic. Communiction was difficult, but they were totally into the cd, the ideas behind it etc, and gave their approval.. Well, I could have done with Yan's help for sure [speaking French], but we managed to connect and I got some pictures.

The played some amazing music too, the sort of music that stays with you......and as you will see, they looked incredible :-)

But for myself, meeting Gilberto Gils band was the experience of a lifetime, we had some great moments in such a short time..it was like a dream,

cheers

[Current Mood | anxious]

Per Ricky, he's preparing an initial release of the Travels Tu Earth compilation to distribute at the 2004 Womadelaide Festival in South Australia. This large World Music celebration is host to many International acts, and this year members of the real Touareg Tribe are present.

Quoth Ricky:

It would seem that the cd will indeed be ready this weekend, I'll post photos of the presentation to the Touareg tribe members sometime early next week...... Have hooked up with a great printing service, but the final print won't be ready for a couple of weeks, so we're belting out a few pre edition copies for the weekend.

So I'm terribly excited, and I hope you are too :)

After much moaning and groaning, I was able to configure phpBB <hooray!>

So now we have a forum. Check it out: http://www.globalnomads.net/phpBB2/index.php. I haven't installed any avatars, so I enabled linking to your own 80 x 80 avatars on your own servers. If this begins to eat up bandwidth, I will disable it.

Still waiting on an actual finalized list of tracks for the compilation. Ricky's last post to the Tuaregs Yahoogroups mentions that he's taking it for a final play-through to one of Big Cactus cohorts. He's been on the road a bit the past few months, hence the delay. I'll eventually get him access to this journal so he can update you in his own words :) That is, if he has time for such things.

Pleasd don't lose faith! It will happen, and the next project at GlobalNomads.net will have some deadlines involved. I'm thinking of starting a buzz about net-only releases, so we can avoid the delays of pressing and promote music directly. But it is nice to have the whole package in your hand, and it makes it easier to send albums to professionals for review and play when you actually have albums.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd mention another collective I'm involved in: futurehaus.com. Some of the people involved are related to the Tuareg community, directly or indirectly, and the visionary nature of Futurehaus is inspiring indeed. Be sure to add it to your bookmarks!

Looking foward to what lies ahead. Cheers!

Here are the backposts. Now that the news page is a blog, I should be able to post more frequently than before. :-)

I also want to apologize in advance for the lack of updates over the past few months. It's been hectic for everyone, but I will do my best to keep this information up to date so you don't give up on us! I should have something new to post within the next week or two, so stay tuned. - Bruce

Ricky:

As some of you may have by now worked out, I'm very interested and somewhat involved in the music industry. I have always been an indie artist, even before the term existed and a big motivating factor in the Travels 2 Earth CD is the fact that it has NOTHING to do with the traditional music business base:

Here are some interesting articles for those of you trying to make a go in the music biz:

Bruce:

Added Aeoko's interview, fixed some bugs in the css file, hyperlinked the heck out of Winston Elroy's interview and the others, which is a trend I very much would like to see across this entire site. Globalnomads.net is, in a sense, one intersection of the giant spider web of independent music sources on the net. I intend to keep things charged and fresh here, and we can use all the help we can get with content, promotion, funding for search engine placement, tee-shirt purchases, CD purchases, etc. Do the neatest thing you've ever done and support the efforts of independent music distribution for the sake of the music - not the business.

If you want to contribute in any way, please get in touch: bruce (at) novachild.com. And be sure and sign up for the Email updates (see the nav panel top left).

Lastly, I want to thank all the fine compliments and approvals from the tu-tribe for the new GUI, especially Bram Bos as he charged all of this with his personal project "Tuareg," which later became the best-kept secret of underground recording artists everywhere.

And mad props to Big Cactus for backing all this up with their technical know-how.

Complete site update. New interface, additional material, and more detailed hypertext.

The interview section is growing in leaps and bounds, and we're looking forward to more great interviews from the Tribe of Tu. We are also looking for additional content from our artists and afficionados (reviews, essays, opinions, tips, tricks, exclusive tracks, etc). Email Bruce with your ideas and/or content.

Posted a fresh, exciting interview with Nanosphere Complex this morning. All's quiet on the western front...

8-6-03

Yes, the compilation is a couple of months over the initial release date, but it will be well worth the wait. Producer R.J Hooper stated today that Big Cactus is finalizing the last couple of tracks. Sometime within the next week or two we should have some fairly substantial news to post here.

New content: there is an interview with NOVAchild (yours truly) posted in the interview section. More are coming, so stay tuned! I am still awaiting criticism and comments on the Press Release from Ricky, but all is well in the meantime.

I have provided the link to our promotional items for sale at cafeshops.com. Although the tee-shirt art is not finalized, you can still support the project with hats, mugs, mousepads and posters. Plus, if you just can't wait on the shirts, you can buy a version without the back artwork for now, and come back for the completed shirt later!

You can also donate pure funds to the project. They aren't tax deductable, but they will definitely help us cover the costs of packaging and production. Any funds over and beyond the cost of this project are going for a charitable purpose as well (see the Press Release draft)

Thanks for your support in advance. (Bruce)

Umesh has completed a draft of our press release. You can view it here and send criticism to me. Aside from a few minor points, I am happy with it.

In addition, Umesh has agreed to announce GlobalNomads.net in his e-Zine at www.dhwanii.com, so be sure to sign up while you're here. Also, be sure to sign up for Traveller, the official GlobalNomads newsletter.

Still pending confirmation on the track listing, bios, photos, and URLs of each artist.

Cheers,
Bruce Rich

RJ Hooper (Australia)

Just got back from the AGM of the South Australian Music Industry Association where James, Kingsley, myself and the guy who is doing the the transaction page and delivery system (Gareth Lot, son of Bob Lot the promoter for any locals who may be interested in who it is). So thanks to bruces efforts, gareths people will be checking out the global nomads site and designing the transaction page to suit. Also, the boys have decided to redbook the CD right from the start, and another mastering studio has been booked to rework the whole project, four tunes in particular. This will all be happening fairly quickly: everyone is highly enthused, maybe because of a longstanding professional association with what Kinglsey calls *indigenous music*, maybe because of the cyber aspect.....I don't know what
it is, but the willingness of everyone involved to commit resources, from the musicians on, is very pleasing.

Bruce Rich (USA)

Special thanks to Umesh, technical editor of www.dhwanii.com, GlobalNomads will soon have a working draft of our Press Release. Dhwannii, meaning "sound" in sanskrit, is a wonderful Indian / World Music e-zine that I urge you to subscribe to. I will post the working draft here on the news page once received until we all agree on a finalized version. So be sure to bookmark the site and check back often.
