4:15 pm - Two recently finished pieces

carmelized
I haven't seen much recent activity in this community, so I thought I'd share two projects I recently finished:

photo.jpg

I found an old wooden frame at a garage sale. They gave it to me for free. I immediately thought "porthole"! ... and what better to view through a porthole than a squid. I left the solder lines smooth but textured, and distressed the patina to give it kind of an aged and beat up look like the frame.

I actually liked my original illustration for the design better. I think the problem is that the design just didn't translate that well to the small size I made it and some of the smaller details were lost. I will also be mindful to avoid pieces that are too small in the future. Illustration behind cut.

I also finally finished this:

Some of you may remember I posted about it well over a year ago. I had some setbacks with getting divorced, but it's amazing how much more productive one can be when certain stress factors are removed. *ahem*

I just wanted to say hi. I'm new to LJ, and interested in stained glass. If this post goes as planned, you'll see two windows I designed and made. The Asian landscape is made of scraps!

9:10 pm - A recent small commission

sunrising

My roomie asked me to make something for him and I was a little worried ... he wanted a Puerto Rican flag ... I've never made flags before, but after doing this one, it's surprisingly easy.  I decided to fuse it so there wouldn't be silly break lines in places that would annoy me.  Here's the final result, complete with fingerprints!  I should have cleaned it before taking the photo.

10:31 am - Great Blue Heron Window

earthmother45
I finally finished and photographed the great blue heron window. This is a companion window to the round egret window I made and sold over a year ago. My client is down here this month and will transport it by car back up to her home in Maryland. The two windows the stained glass will hang in look out over a lake that has a dock and many water birds (including the egret and blue heron.) I think she will probably have them hanging with the birds facing each other.

The windows are 25" in diameter, not including the wings beyond the frame.
I used the same glasses for the water and the sky, made them both the same size and extended the wings beyond the frame, to tie the two windows together.

7:53 pm - My next job, so far.

earthmother45
Last year I sold a round window I had made of an egret. I drew the design from a photograph I’d taken at a nearby pond. When I sold it, the client asked if I’d make a companion window for her of another bird and have it for her when she came back the following year. She lives up north and comes down in March, so she will be here soon.

This past year I have been studying and photographing the Great Blue Heron, so I decided that was going to be the bird. I got some great pictures and they have helped me alot in drawing my design. I finished cutting it all out a few days ago. This is what I have so far.

The sky and water glass is the same as the Egret Window, it is exactly the same size, and the wings extend beyond the frame. The rest is all different. She lives on a pond with a dock, so I put that in, too.

10:46 pm - DONATION

earthmother45
The sports team at the high school my grandsons attend have a fundraiser each February. In the past I have always donated one of my “already made” stained glass windows for their live auction. This year I decided to make one from their school logo. I drew the design from a photo I had taken of one of their T-shirts. It is 18” x 24” and framed out in a 1” oak frame.

10:25 pm - ANOTHER DONATION

earthmother45
For several years now I have gotten so much pleasure from the Palma Sola Botanical Park, that last summer I decided I wanted to give something back the best way I knew how, and build and donate a stained glass window. I designed the window for them from a photograph I had taken there.

This new window is similar to one I had made and sold about a year and a half ago. I did change the egret’s head and neck a bit from the first one, and changed the foreground and background design and glasses.

It is 25" in diameter.

I recently finished it and presented it to them last week.

Next on the table is a commission: It is going to be a companion window for the first round egret window I made in July 2007. This one will be of the Great Blue Heron.

10:36 am - reinforcing windows

carmelized
I'm making a window panel using the tiffany method. I've been looking at other large window pieces online and seen references by the artists to reinforcing them for added strength. How would one go about doing this? If possibly, I'd like to make my project as sturdy as possible as it is a gift for my sister and will need to do some traveling. Thanks!

3:51 pm - NAUTILUS FINISHED

earthmother45
I worked all day Friday and most of Saturday on the Nautilus window soldering, framing, cleaning and polishing. Even though it is only 14" x 21", an awful lot of work went into this small window. Plus when I finished, I noticed one of the glass globs was cracked, so I had to break it out and replace it. I love the way these look in windows, especially if the design is of underwater, but they are a pain to work with sometimes.

Behind the cut are more pictures taken from inside and outside the house, and closeups. The difference between inside and outside (or front and back) was amazing. Forgive so many pictures, but the closeups were pretty neat looking.

(NOTE: the dichroic glass is aqua blue from the inside, and red/orange from the outside.) I'm sure you can tell which is which. And soon after I started taking pictures, my husband came home and parked his red truck right outside the window where I was taking the pictures, so you can see all the red from that in some of the inside pictures.

(The camera doesn't miss a thing, and I can see where I need to go back and do some more cleaning!)

10:53 am - Nautilus

earthmother45
Here is what I'm working on right now. It's been on the "back burner" for quite some time while I've been doing other things.

I finally got it all foiled this morning, and unless something comes up, I will try and solder it tomorrow. Some of the glass I've never used before, and I'm very anxious to see what it all looks like up to the light.

I hand painted the Nautilus on both sides of the glass, and low fired all the pieces. And that strip from side to side under the Nautilus is all dichroic glass. I started out with just a few glass nuggets, but kept adding more and more.

This first picture is before I added all the nuggets, (and was in the process of laying them out and grinding them in,) and the foiling.
