Basic Info & Backstory
Since the discovery of faster-than-light travel, humans have been spreading across the universe, discovering new solar systems, new planets and new resources as they go. The Universal Council was created as a means of funding exploration, governing colonies and protecting the new human outposts.
Deep into the future, the brave new world of outer space has been colonised, exploited and corrupted. There are those who would like to believe that we have entered a new age of peaceful civilisation - and those who know what lies beneath the facade.
Welcome to the Vidar system. Near the centre of chartered space, its handful of planets and moons was once considered a beacon of excellence - but things have changed. World governments have collapsed or been overthrown by rogue groups. The black market dominates: Vidar is now a playground for gamblers, addicts and whoremongers, and a vital meeting place for inter-system criminal groups.
On the edge of Vidar is the space station Glasir. Constructed by the Universal Council, it was designed as a trading post and stopping point: somewhere that travellers could stop, make repairs and rest in comfort before heading on their way. It was also a colony in its own right, where people live, work and raise their families.
It still serves those purposes, but now it also acts as an intermediary between legal and illegal trade: it's a place to come for under-the-table deals, money laundering and (ahem) 'corporate entertainment'. Some of its inhabitants are deeply involved in the black market - others not at all. Some are of the opinion that Glasir can be restored to its former glory - some are not.
Classes
There are four classes for potential players to choose from:
1) Crew - Those who run Glasir and keep it working. Precise ranks and titles will be discussed after applications are approved, but there are three broad sub-classes:
a) Administrators - Bureaucrats responsible for managing various sections of the station, communicating with the Universal Council and overseeing the running of things on board ship.
b) Technicians - If it breaks, the technicians fix it. They also run a service for the repair and maintenance of visiting ships.
c) Security - Glasir has its own police force which prevents (or turns a blind eye to) crime on board the station. The security force also employs a number of fighter pilots whose job it is to patrol the area surrounding Glasir and repel potential troublemakers.
2) Civilians - Others who live and work on Glasir. Their jobs are as varied as you might imagine, since Glasir has the population of a small city and has a variety of professions - teachers, doctors, shopkeepers, cleaners, cooks, hairdressers, etc. - to keep things going. Of course there are also stay-at-home parents and kids, and people living off welfare who do nothing but eat ramen and be a drain on society.
3) Entertainers - People need to be kept happy. This class includes dancers, singers, actors, other performers...and prostitutes of various levels of classiness.
4) The Mob - Glasir has a large underground element. Under a handful of rival bosses exists a network of dealers, traffickers, fencers and all their like. Of course, this class overlaps with others - a civilian or technician might also be accepting money from a gang leader for his or her services. Your application should reflect this.
Rules
1. Don't be a jerk. The definition of 'jerk' varies and the mods' decision is final, but broadly speaking - be nice. Solve your disputes via email or chat rather than letting them fester - nobody needs that sort of tension. If a log isn't going as expected and your characters aren't getting along like you thought they would, talk about if before starting a fight in-game. If you need the mods to wade in then we will.
2. We expect a reasonable level of written English. Write in prose, & no txt $peak plz. We will make small allowances for those whose first language is not English, but the rule applies to them too.
3. God-modding is not permitted - that is, you are not allowed to use another person's character - without that person's explicit permission.
4. No Japanese honorifics, greetings etc. It's not necessary, and Japan doesn't exist any more (see rule 8).
5. Spoilers are fair game, so if you're halfway through Bleach and somebody mentions in-game that Urahara Kisuke was Alexander The Great in a previous life*, don't complain about it.
* this is untrue but would be awesome
6. Try to post regularly, and keep an eye on your logs to make sure you're up to date. If you know you will be absent for a week or longer, please let us know.
7. The mods respect the right of your characters to screw whoever they want, however they want, and the RP will have adult content. If this bothers you, this isn't the RP you're looking for.
8. No characters are from Earth. Earth is now completely incapable of supporting human life. We have provided three systems with a variety of planets, and please keep in mind that several generations have been born and raised on Glasir itself. You may use another planet in our solar system or invent your own, but please respect the naming scheme (that is, taking planet/system names from mythological places and figures) that has been established.
9. This is an AU, but this does not mean that all your characters' awesome superhuman powers have to be left at the door. See below for details of The Iduna Project.
10. The mods know very little about the science and technology specific to space exploration, or to the Iduna Project, so don't even ask us. In turn, you are not required to have any specialist knowledge.
11. All playing will take place on the two RP communities. Please do not use your individual journal for sending messages to other characters, etc.
12. Have fun. Yes, this is a rule. Anyone found not to be having fun will be banned.
The Iduna Project
This being the future, the possibilities of robotic enhancements and genetic engineering have opened a broad vista for the improvement of the human body. In this AU, this has led to the Iduna Project, a program for human enhancement.
What this means practically is that your character may have one ability considered superhuman as long as it is rationalised. For example, Alucard from Hellsing is a vampire and has multiple powers - in the RP, he might have been genetically altered to have an unusually rapid healing factor, but otherwise his abilities (strength, sharpshooting etc.) would be limited to the results of training and practice. Azula from Avatar might have mechanical attachments to her arms and legs that shoot fire or electric bolts, allowing her to 'firebend'.
Characters who do not have any such abilities in their canons can acquire one in the AU as long as it makes sense. For example, Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist is a crack shot with a gun, so in the AU she could be given a mechanical eye that gives her 100% accuracy and/or microscopic vision.
There must be a trade-off, however, so no characters are invincible. Mechnical enhancements can break down or run out of power. Genetic engineering might result in a weaker immune system. If your characters' physical strengths and weaknesses match up with those of your character in canon, so much the better. Using Alucard as an example again, his weakness might be that he is oversensitive to sunlight.
The Local Area
As mentioned in the rules, we have put together three systems. Vidar is discussed in the backstory; Heka and Althaea are nearby neighbours.

Application Guidelines
1. The application form is here.
We realize that building an AU background is an organic process. Sometimes the character takes us places we didn't quite think of at first. But you've got to start somewhere, right? This application is as much meant to gauge your writing ability as it is as, well, an application; so, please be as descriptive and thoughtful as possible.
If there is anything you don't understand about the AU, then it's probably a failure on our part to explain it properly - please, just ask! The mods will write and post applications for their own characters so you know the sort of format and level of detail we expect.
2. You may start out with two characters. A third can be applied for after two months, and a fourth may be considered later at the mods' discretion.
3. Temporary characters (TCs). The idea of the space station is partly that its population is transitive, thus the idea of the TC. You can apply for a character who will come into the station from elsewhere to rest/make repairs/whatever, and can stay for a prearranged period of RP time. After that time has elapsed, you can either withdraw that character and apply for a new one, or have that character settle in Glasir and keep him or her permanently. This will allow you to put your characters on a 'trial run' and see whether or not they work out.
If you are planning on taking this route, we recommend creating a nonspecific account for your TCs and using icons etc. to make clear who you are playing at any given time. This means you won't have to create a dozen accounts, only to use them for a few weeks.
