(Note: See below for rules.) "When you give, you give to yourself. When you receive, you receive from yourself." - Brad Jensen "To give without any reward, or any notice, has a special quality of its own." - Anne Morrow Lindbergh "No man is so poor as to have nothing worth giving. Give what you have. To someone it may be better than you dare to think." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow "Charity never humiliated him who profited from it, nor ever bound him by the chains of gratitude, since it was not to him but to God that the gift was made." - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) THE GIVING TREE This community is for giving. We can talk about giving, volunteering, helping out, etc. But here, we don't just talk about giving, we also give. If you have something you think others may need, and wish to give it away, make a post here. You can give clothes, books, CDs, canned goods, a computer, etc. RULES I know. Common sense rules. But it's best to state them here anyway... 1. YOURS TO GIVE - Goods have to be yours to give, free and clear of title. If it belongs to your little brother and you didn't get permission, please don't give it here. (This rule goes double for your ex's goods.) 2. NOTHING ILLEGAL - If it is illegal to possess, transport, send, or receive, then don't offer it here. As a general rule of thumb, no drugs, pornography, weapons, or exotic animals. Works or derivatives of works copyrighted by someone else is not okay to give away. Retail purchased CDs and DVDs are OK. But please don't offer burned copies or mixes of songs or videos or programs on CDs, DVDs, etc. unless you are the actual copyright owner. 3. DESCRIBE - Try to describe the items in detail. Pictures are nice, too. If you can offer to pay postage, please do! 4. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED - Give to the first person who first posts a request for the items offered. Since time zones are different, rather than go by the clock, go by the order of the comments listed, from top to bottom. No favoritism, please. (If you know someone might like something, ask them in private, rather than make a post.) 5. NOT FOR RESALE - This is for charity. Things offered here are free to the needy, not to the greedy. Let's stick to the spirit of sharing, not the spirit of selling. 6. NO MONEY - Someone asked this question, and it is a good question. For now, please stick to goods, not money. Money brings in a lot of tangles. If you want to give money, you can privately offer it to someone you know who is in need. This is also not a place for fundraising or membership drives, no matter how worthy the cause. 7. NEED INDEED - If you would like to make a request, please be courteous in expressing your need when making a post. For example, no one may be offering clothes in your size, but people will be happy to check their closets to see if there are clothes in your size! But if you're posting because you specifically want a green corduroy jacket by Calvin Klein, or a copy of the latest Britney Spears CD, or a LiveJournal invite code, or for people to add you to their "Friends" list, or for people to fill out your Amazon wishlist, then this is probably not the right place for you. :) 8. STUFF HAPPENS - If someone offered something and you didn't get it, maybe it got lost in the mail. Or your neighbor stole the package. Things like that do happen. Please don't complain. (You didn't pay anything for it, did you?) 9. LIVEJOURNAL FOLKS ONLY - This is to help foster the spirit and vitality of the LiveJournal community in general. Also, registered users are already legally bound by the LiveJournal community's Terms of Service. 10. BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER - If I have to explain this to you or remind you of this rule, this is probably not the right place for you. And do please send a thank you to someone if they sent you something. People like to know that a gift was received. They like to know their gift has found a good home! ;) Joining this community or posting a comment to this community constitutes acceptance of the rules listed above. |
