I am woman, hear me barf [30 Jun 2009|09:03pm]

Hi, all! I have two X chromosomes. I am a geek. Possibly also a nerd.

I'm a fan of a ton of science fiction fandoms, including but certainly not limited to Transformers. I really enjoyed TF2 because of the explosions and sexy cars and fight scenes.

I was supposed to enjoy it because of the romance? Did not get that memo.

From Huffington Post:

Apparently, women are once again being told that they only go to movies for the mushy stuff. Check out this quote from David Germain's AP box office rundown:

["The sequel broadened the franchise's fan base. Females accounted for just 40 percent of the audience for the first "Transformers" but 46 percent for the sequel, (Paramount vice chairman Rob) Moore said. Much of that was due to the on-screen romance for the characters played by Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, who were relative unknowns when the first movie came out..."]

This writer shares my disblief... )

I would have preferred less romance and more giant robocars beating each other up.

Just for discussion's sake, who's your favorite Transformer? Partial to Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and movie!Ironhide myself.

Anyone have input? [25 May 2009|07:03pm]

Hi, I just discovered this comm, awesome idea! ;D

I'm going to be building my own computer soon (husband to help, heh), and was just wondering about one small component: it will have SSD, and it'd be helpful to find some sort of mounting brackets. Newegg has 2 but they are both sold out! I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other places that sold them, for ~10 bucks.

Thanks!

A friend sent me the zip files of the 2009 Star Trek audio book, mp3 format, so I can put it on my iTunes without having to pay for it. So, I unzip it, open iTunes, click copy folder, and it does. But, not as an audio book. I go and look for it, and every single track is in the music library!

So, anyone know how I can let it know it's an audio book and move it to that particular library?

Thought this might be an interesting item. I saw a commercial on the Science Channel for programming this coming Monday to celebrate Geek Pride Day. And evidently it's not just there.

Interesting... [20 May 2009|04:51pm]

A list of interesting, recognizable films coming out in 2011:

AKIRA
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo
Battle Royale (guessing the American version of the Japanese films/book?)
Battlestar Galactica
Brave New World
Bye Bye Birdie
Cowboy Bebop
Dante's Inferno
Evangelion 4
Fraggle Rock: The Movie
Ghost in the Shell
Gilligan's Island
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
Happy Days
Howard Stern's Porky's (lol, if you've seen the originals)
Jack and Jill
Jekyll
Life of Pie
Lions, Tigers and Bears
Ninja Scroll
Paradise Lost
Peewee's Playhouse: The Movie
Pompeii
Romancing the Stone (really?!)
The Bell Jar
The Birds
The Crow
The First Avenger: Captain America
The Giver
The Little Shop of Horror
The Power of the Dark Crystal
The Smirfs
Thor (YES)
Tom and Jerry
TRON 2.0
Unicorn
Wonder Woman
X-Men Origins: Magneto
X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2

IMDb doesn't have a whole lot of info on most of them, so my imagination is going bonkers! There were plenty more that sounded interesting, but a title can be misleading so I left most of them out. So many remakes... some are long overdue, but others shouldn't be tampered with. Plenty of them were expected (but unnecessary) sequels, like Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rambo V. Spiderman 4?! WHY? I thought the first three wrapped everything up very well. Anyway, discuss!

marvel divas! [19 May 2009|12:50pm]

Hey fellow girl geeks!

As I'm sure many of you are already aware, last week Joe Quesada gave a public rebuttal in response to all of the criticism the Marvel Divas pitch had received.

I was one of the people who criticized the pitch on the website Hardcore Nerdity, so I, like a handful of others, felt compelled to respond.

It's pretty tongue-in-cheek, as per usual, but if any of you are interested in reading what I had to say you can find my response here!

Since the last post mentioned movies,
I should bring up another movie.
TR2N is coming out in 2011.
[The year I graduate.]
I'm dying to see it!
[Daft Punk also has music featured in there too. <3]

My Dad said that this summer was the "Year of Machines".
With Terminator, Star Trek and many others,
I think this will be one of the greatest summers out there. :]

SuicideGirls In Space [15 May 2009|12:40pm]

andreaknoll

SuicideGirls attended the NASA / Jet Propulsion Labs Open House the other weekend at their California Institue of Technology site in Pasadena. Members of the public were able to roam around the space flight operations and assembly facilities, and watch JPL's boffins play with very expensive remote control toys like their Mars and lunar rovers. While the Deep Space Network control room was suitably ground control to Major Tom, it was amazing how much of the research and gadgets on show relied on duct tape and tin foil.

Encouraged by the "Ask A Scientist A Question" badges on offer, SuicideGirls also ascertained that the prototype Mars rover JPL had built at great expense currently relied on wheels bought from the local bike store to get around. (Their giant spider-like ATHLETE rover, intended for use on NASA's 2020 moon mission, was far more impressive however.) When a fellow bystander asked about Virgin Galactic and Richard Branson's plans for space tourism, a JPL boffin was rather dismissive of the endeavor, saying he couldn't understand why folks would want to pay a small fortune for the flights which will only allow time for 15 minutes of weightlessness, during which time approximately 50% of the tourists would get space sick (apparently the resulting vomit would then float in globules around the fellow passengers in the craft). We helpfully explained that it was all about shags in space (Branson's always marketed his ventures using sex) -- and that some people will be willing to pay almost anything to join the 60-Mile High Club. We feel that all parties came away enlightened from this scientific encounter.

Feminist, LGBTQI friendly guild forming on WoW [11 May 2009|02:49pm]

knitmeapony
Hello!

Apologies if anyone sees this more than once. I'll try to space them out in time. This is moderator approved!

Thanks to some geeking out on the feminist blog Shakespeare's
Sister
, a bunch of folks have decided to put together a feminist, inclusive guild in WoW to counteract the sexist, racist, homophobic BS you see on a lot of MMORPGs.

We're very open and democratic, and just starting up. By popular vote we ended up on a US RP PVE server (Steamwheedle Cartel) playing Alliance, but there's already talk of a Horde contingent as well as a European sister guild on one of those servers.

We're the Monstrous Regiment (yes, a Pratchett reference), and you can find us here: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/monstrousregiment/

I'm knitmeapony there, too, so if the application still asks for your Shakesville handle, tell them I sent you.

Please join us! We're open to just about everything, and we're just starting out so you can have a hand in setting our various policies and procedures.

GRAR! [10 May 2009|10:28am]

Okay, my passionate loathing for PCs? I thought it couldn't get any worse. Well it has.

I am a Mac person, but for work I recently decided to get an HP Mini because the remote log in for the work computer only works on PCs. Nice right? Yes I could have used cross over but really the less work stuff I have on my Macs? the happier I am.

Or so I thought.

Happier? HAH!

So I have been running IE just fine on this little POS, but then about two days ago, IE decided that it could not connect to the internet. Mind you it is still on the same wireless connection it has had no problem with for days. Also:

1. Firefox works just fine for connecting to the internet. So does Opera.
2. The IE on my husband's PC connects just fine to the same wireless connection. (but I can't use his as I don't have the security card loaded on his laptop and can't get it loaded where we are)
3. I reinstalled IE8 (the computer had IE7) 3 times and it took three times for the "quick easy install" to actually work.

And so, still for whatever reason everything ELSE in this brand new week old POS ready to be thrown through a window can see the internets are workin, but the ONE thing that I need to find the internet? Yeah it is like trying to plug a rhino into a wall socket and use it like a blender.

Figured you girl geeks might get a chuckle out of my frustration. Blasted PCs.

Happy Star Wars Day! [04 May 2009|07:12pm]

trina_crys
[ music | Animal Crossing City Folk ]

Photobucket

From Wiki:
Star Wars Day may refer to one of several dates or events honoring or involving Star Wars.

May 4 is called Star Wars Day because of a pun or play on words based on the similarity between "May the 4th be with you" and "May the force be with you", a phrase often spoken in the Star Wars movies.

Despite efforts to start a Jedi Church with 4 May as its Star Wars Day, as of 4 May 2009 there is no religion-supporting organization that promotes 4 May as Star Wars Day.

The joke is recorded in the UK parliament's Hansard.

Hey my fellow lady-nerds!

I've recently written a little (tongue-in-cheek) article concerning the new Marvel series Marvel Divas. It was featured on the front page of Hardcore Nerdity AND Jonathan Llyr just asked me to join in a PODCAST that my article inspired!

I'm so nerdy EXCITED!

Okay, so, if the topic interests you even remotely, no matter what your stance, please, please feel free to comment over here, because I'm making notes of all the points I'd like to raise during the Podcast.

I'll also make sure to post a link to the Podcast as soon as it's up!

Thank you!
