Google Filed Patent to Covertly Profile MMORPG Gamers

Here's a scary thing that came across my desk today:

Google Patents Gamer Profiling Technology.

The patent was filed 2 years ago, and they want to do this covertly. Meaning, you don't know if Google will be listening in while you game.

Um, invasion of privacy anyone? Big brother is watching you?

I think the funniest part about this is the whole "psych profile" aspect. When I game, I play to escape reality. Meaning, I'll often choose avatars or games that are unlike what I am in real life to get a taste of something different.

I can't believe this was filed and no one knew about it. Kind of scary.

I totally would LOVE to see their psychological profile of me.

"Aspires to be, or likes looking at, hot women.

Uses correct grammar and capitalization when conversing.

Likes to blow shit up and kill things at close range.

Has a cat."

I'm a psychologist (kinda) and I've always been curious about whether you could build profiles of people that way. Does a certain type of person prefer a certain kind of weapon in a game? Could you look at someones collection of RPG characters and tell something about them? I reckon you probably could if you did the right research.

Of course such a project would be a really bad idea. Not least because a tabloid would say "Having RPG characters wearing blue clothing leads to serial killers!!!!!" or somesuch within a week of the first snippet of data being released *rolls eyes*

I think the only things they could definitely pick out - without scanning every bit of text you throw in, I'm assuming they're just looking at characters - is the stuff you just can't stand.

"Oh, hey, nothing but high-level close melees, while there's a priest at level 3 that hasn't been touched in months." Without looking at the text, there's not a lot to work with - sort of like the whole "just because someone's polite, concise, and submissive in public doesn't mean they're like that ALL the time" thing; you can figure out what someone likes but not what THEY are like necessarily.

Honestly, I don't think enough serial killers play MMOs . . . not that that would stop the tabloids.

It's like the shoe size discussion - sure, there may be a statistically significant relation between shoe size and, say, relationship success or aggression (for instance), but does it actually MEAN anything?

Heh, of course it'd mean SOMETHING - it just wouldn't mean what most people would take it to mean :P It'd most likely mean that men score higher in both shoe size and whatever it's related to for wildly different reasons.

There's going to be a relationship between what people like and what they are like (depending on whether you use a paradigm that accepts such constructs of course :P) the only question is whether that relationship would be strong enough to observe or useful in any way. I'd still be curious to find out, though it's a curiosity rather than a subject of serious study :P

Yeah, the serial killers thing was a joke, not that I'd ever poke fun at tabloids O_:)

Oh that's real reasuring. I love the idea of having big brother watching me even more then they already do.

I agree with [info]kemica, it really is sickening.

Wow... I'd hate to see my profile!

Enjoys: sleeping and drinking all day (Sims); smacking up my bitches (GTA); killing innocent bystanders (Fable); breeding chocobos; and catching bugs (Animal Crossing).

Mines would have to go something like: likes blowing stuff up (DoW) and has a fear of insects (S:BW). Kinda boring, mind you.

Wonder if they'd gather information on how you play games like GTA, and use that against you.

My question is: how will they monitor your use of online games? What's this talk of memory cards? Are they installing spyware on people's computers to watch them as they play games, or are they having game-makers send them logs?

...What?

This is why they wouldn't enjoy me if they knew what I was playing: Is an insane sniper (Halo) with a penchant for boomeranging things in the head (Zelda: Windwaker) who also enjoys pretending to be a secret agent (Bond)

Ughhhhh.... I cannot wait for WAR.

just got done doing an SL run for the kajillionth time for my Robes of Oblivion. Of course, they didn't drop. Again. And then I went and farmed to level up tailoring. Glee, glee, glee. I'm not bitter at all. =P

I did! She's saying that she's been in a dungeon trying to get a piece of gear to drop from a boss, and it won't drop, and it's getting REALLY FRUSTRATING, frustrating to the point where she willingly went to gather materials to level the tailoring profession, which is ALSO a pain in the ass.

Nope, I'm not in that same boat at all. Stupid Murmur.

You know, sometimes I feel like the only person in the world that doesn't play WoW and has no interest in starting.

NO!!!! YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Now there are 2 of us! We can own the world while the resto of the nerds are off playing WoW! Yeah for us! WE can eventually own everything, even Blizzard, and then brainwash all the drones(er I mean WoW players)into giving us all the power in the universe...bwaaahahaha

Or, we could just enjoy rebelling against the swarm that is WoW, and years later, when everyone says they can't believe how much of their lives they WASTED playing it, you and I can go "nehner nehner nehner" and say I told you so to all of them!

Either way, I'm good. I am going to friend you because you are so cool! YOU DON'T PLAY WOW!

Exactly!

I don't even know why I play anymore. It is mind numbingly irritating. =(

Also, I just read through my comment and it really IS like a foreign language if you don't play WoW. Heh, sorry about that!

Some of my guildies have been doing SL runs, I'm not quite at the level for them yet.

But farming for tailoring sucks, I'm much keener on my skinning abilities. :)

Color me unsurprised and not remotely freaked out.

Come on, people. You're already giving all this information to the MMO companies! Sony and Blizzard know what characters you play, how often you play, what you do while playing, how many chat channels you participate in and how good your grammar is, and YES THEY KNOW WHEN YOU CYB0R THAT DARK ELF HOTTIE!

But seriously. This is probably something they're going to get permission to install on the game from the developers, and every time you send your info to the game's servers they're recording it per usual - now they're just going to start crunching the numbers.

It wouldn't surprise me if they've been testing this technology out already, without telling anyone.

It would probably also explain why - being a guy who frequently plays female MMO avatars - I started randomly getting spam for breast enlargement cream a while back. ¬_¬

i'd probably look like a psycho to them. "plays vice city and basically spends the entire time killing hookers and cheat coding the tank and doing vigilante runs"

or i'd look lame

"plays a mage that shoots first and asks questions later. meanwhile leaving her team behind so she can liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive." something so awesome about the mage being the only one to survive LOL.
