Google Filed Patent to Covertly Profile MMORPG Gamers Here's a scary thing that came across my desk today: Google Patents Gamer Profiling Technology. The patent was filed 2 years ago, and they want to do this covertly. Meaning, you don't know if Google will be listening in while you game. Um, invasion of privacy anyone? Big brother is watching you? I think the funniest part about this is the whole "psych profile" aspect. When I game, I play to escape reality. Meaning, I'll often choose avatars or games that are unlike what I am in real life to get a taste of something different. I can't believe this was filed and no one knew about it. Kind of scary.

I think the only things they could definitely pick out - without scanning every bit of text you throw in, I'm assuming they're just looking at characters - is the stuff you just can't stand.
"Oh, hey, nothing but high-level close melees, while there's a priest at level 3 that hasn't been touched in months." Without looking at the text, there's not a lot to work with - sort of like the whole "just because someone's polite, concise, and submissive in public doesn't mean they're like that ALL the time" thing; you can figure out what someone likes but not what THEY are like necessarily.
Honestly, I don't think enough serial killers play MMOs . . . not that that would stop the tabloids.
It's like the shoe size discussion - sure, there may be a statistically significant relation between shoe size and, say, relationship success or aggression (for instance), but does it actually MEAN anything?
