X-Posting - So - in theatre we're always told that the best way to spend our time in between shows is to "read more plays - read read read plays!" Here's my question - Where does one get all these new plays that we're supposed to be reading all the time? Do you all just randomly order handfuls of plays from DPS or Samuel French or whoever else? Doesn't that get expensive? Or do you have alternate places to go to read the new things as they come out? Resources and suggestions welcome - thanks! Mon, Nov. 12th, 2007, 01:06 am
callyboy: local one strike
( Local One On Strike )We are LOCAL ONE The stagehands who work behind the scenes for all the shows on Broadway WE TRULY REGRET THAT THERE IS NO SHOW. Theatre owners and producers are demanding a 38 % cut in our jobs and wages. They have built a $20 million fund to be used against us from the sale of theatre tickets to the public. Broadway is a billion dollar a year industry and has never been more profitable than now. Cuts in our jobs and wages will never result in a cut in ticket prices to benefit the public, but only an increase in the profits for producers. Unlike the producers, we are not fighting for our second or third homes; we are fighting to keep the one that we have. We ask for your understanding in our efforts to defend ourselves and protect our families. Sincerely, The Brothers and Sisters of LOCAL ONE, I.A.T.S.E. joreth: Free Shipping On Techie T-Shirts!
Click on the banner to go to The Shop! It's that time of year! When all the parents go broke trying to outfit their kids with all the gadgets and gizmos they absolutely HAVE to have to impress their friends and when all of next season's influx of hopeful techies begin their learning in the higher educational settings. That's right, it's Back To School Time! Some of us attended the School Of Hard Knocks where we learned our craft with the gentle guidance of cranky stagehands who humiliated us when we done wrong. Others of us attended more "respectable" schools where we learned the finer points of Technical Theatre science or Recording Engineering, only to get our first job where we learned just how much we still had to learn. Regardless of where we picked up our craft, Stagehand Tees is taking advantage of the season by offering Free Shipping to all orders over $20! Now, it's true that many of our T-Shirts are only $15. And we thought about raising the prices by $5 to help you save that $5 on shipping. But that would be silly. So now is your chance to order more than one item or to Request a design on a shirt that is something other than a T-Shirt! Hurry while the sale lasts! And don't forget ... you need the Promo Code from the banner above to get the sale price! Wed, May. 30th, 2007, 01:31 pm
baeza: Portable Wireless Comm Systems...

I’m coordinating some of the live events equipment for Kumori con, a Japanese Animation Convention. We’ve been doing this show for a few years now and one of the things I would really love is Wireless headsets to communicate from our makeshift light\sound booth in the back of the room to people front of house. It’s mainly for cosplay skits. So they can tell us when the next groups ready and we can cue up lights and sound. But we also have a couple of concerts, dances, and other events where it would be helpful to communicate. Thus far we have had to guess in a dark room when people are ready with very mixed results. We do this thing every year and each year I get about the same budget to play with. I generally try to buy equipment so that we can use it for other events we might have and so we have a bigger inventory next year to draw upon. If I press I can maybe get about 3K to purchase some comm. equipment. I’ve got a quote from a company called Eartec and was wondering if anyone has used their systems before? Also are there other systems that you could recommend? I don’t mind buying the system in piecemeal I’ve heard about Clearcom, Telex, and HME systems but don’t know what I would need to get about 4 people up and running on a wireless system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Michael

Alright folks, I'm an AV tech who just got a Treo 680. What industry related programs are out there that I should look at? Wed, Feb. 28th, 2007, 10:54 am
djluminal: FYI - gear for sale CHEAP

I'm looking to unload some gear! 4 High End Systems / Lightwave Research Technobeams (3 in excellent condition, 1 needs a logic board and some additional components - I've been using it as a parts fixture). I'll take $3000 for all four... That's a DEAL and you know it! Nothing shady, I just need to buy some new gear and I'm willing to sell cheap in order to get the funds together more quickly. Local delivery ONLY (NY/NJ/Philadelphia/DE/MD/DC area is fine), I don't have a problem driving them to your location if you're paying cash or money order, but I don't have cases for them and I don't trust UPS! These are original Technobeams - no LAD, no iris. Two have recently had fresh Philips MSD250/2 lamps installed. I've had them for about a year, they were previously installed in a club. 3 out of the 4 are in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition, the 4th needs some work as previously stated, but is still very useful as a parts fixture as well. All body parts (including hanging yokes and mirrors) are present on all four units. Please pass this info along to anyone you believe might be interested... Reply here for more details. bellaantimatter: Grrr... VL3000 woes (Update)

Okay, so I've changed and re-seated the lamp, checked the sensors, re-configured the lamp, changed the ignitor card and still nothing... anyone else have a go at one of these before? Any new ideas? I'm 32 hours from tech support hours and facing the wrath of the LD in teh meantime... kay... so now I've talked to Varilite for hours and we've decided it's the ballast that's shot. to make matters worse, the screw in the handle of the enclosure is stripped right out... F-BOMB!!! To do: buy reverse drill-bit. *sigh* Sat, Jan. 13th, 2007, 03:15 pm
bellaantimatter: help?

Okay, so I've replaced the lamp in my VL3000 and fired her up: othing. Tok the arse end off, re-seated teh lamp, trned it on, configured the lamp to go on... nothing. Any suggestions? I'm not conviced I put in a bad lamp... I'm wondering if I've overlooked something stupid and obvious or some glitch that everyone but myself and the manual know about...

jaigh_taylor: Road Boxes.

For those of you who have worked theatrical road shows, you know what I'm talking about. The large lumbering steel framed hulks that pack a persons livelihood from town to town. Some have Microwaves and sound systems, some have locking storage. My question to you is: What are some design elements that you find ESSENTIAL to an excellent work box. djluminal: Softgoods help?

Hello all... I am looking for something like Atomic Design's Truss Sock -- a stretchy white fabric "condom" for a vertical truss column -- but a bit smaller (i only need to cover 4 separate 1.5-meter lengths of 12" box truss). Hopefully, I'd like to find a source for a similar product priced as inexpensively as reasonably possible.
Anybody have a lead? Thu, Dec. 14th, 2006, 11:48 pm
joreth: Intro
I am a camera operator, lighting and video tech, rigger, forklift operator, spotlight operator, lighting board operator, and all-around stagehand. I've been in the business for 17 years. I started in theatre lighting and eventually moved to television and video production. I've basically held every single position in a live and a recorded production at least once, including Head Flymaster, Audio Engineer, TD, Wardrobe Mistress ... you name it, I've done it. I recently created http://www.stagehandtees.com a website for stagehands, roadies, and entertainment technicians everywhere to find t-shirts and other apparel especially for us, with our unique business and our unique sense of humor. The website is going over incredibly well, it's becoming more and more popular and I'm having roadies come through town and asking about my shirts! I have a Newsletter mailing list that anyone can join and keep up with all the new shirts I add, along with articles about industry news and latest technology.
I have a personal website too, at http://www.theinnbetween.net and in the About Me section, I have a bit of a rant about being a female in the business. Come check out both of my websites!
I love this business and I wouldn't do anything else.
Thank you. Wed, May. 24th, 2006, 07:10 pm

sweetiemissy:

Hi, I'm new here :) I have a question that I can't figure out. For a show, that my friend is doing, we're using my brand new laptop, the only thing is, is that when we bring down the music all we're hearing is a hum. I'm using an RCA cord that plugs into my headphone jack and into the sound board using a 3/4 inch adapter (the board is a Mackie). I've done everything I could think of trying to get the noise to go away, and even talked to my computer techs and its not an RF problem. Could it be that because everytime we've used my laptop its been sitting in front of a on PC? Could the small amount of radiation coming out of that be interfeering with the RF?

bassboneboy: Wireless Mics for ENG

So we just got some money reallocated at our college TV station, and I'm trying to figure out how to spend 1,550 bucks in 3 weeks. So far I'm going with three Shure SM2 headsets for commentary at hockey games, and I'm also looking to get a wireless mic combo pack. Preferably camera-mounted. We need at at least one body pack w/lav, and one handheld (or plug-on). Any suggestions? Right now I'm looking at an Azden unit, dual channel with a handheld and a bodypack/lav, any experience with Azden? I'm also considering a Sennheiser G2 system with bodypack/lav and plug-on. I have experience with, and trust audio-technica, shure, and sennheiser, but I've never heard of Azden. Also, Samson seems to be the only company with a camera-mounted diversity system, but I dont trust them. Any ideas? We have about 600$ to play with for the mics. Thanks Tue, Apr. 11th, 2006, 07:51 pm
disconnector: A question you probably haven't heard before

Hello all! I will get right to it. I am looking to develop some creative/custom lighting effects for my band's shows. I would like to find out if there is a way to create a 'black and white' lighting filter. From a theoretical standpoint, I can imagine lighting that somehow cancels out the more 'colorful' wavelengths. I fear this may be entirely incorrect - I'm no physicist - so no laughing if you can help it. Any ideas out there? Even if there is not a commercially available product, I'm curious if it is at least POSSIBLE. THANKS A TON! I'm very curious to see what people might come up with. |
