New Community: Goth City Maps

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know about a new community gothcitymaps which aims to get people all over the world to create Google maps of their cities to serve as a valuable resource to any dark alternative types who visit those cities.

Currently we're looking for as many submitters as we can get (obviously one for every city on Earth :P). We are also going to be hopefully needing community moderators (perhaps one for each contributing country?), first preference will be given to map contributers.

I have already sent out requests to nearly two thousand bands in the past month, using their myspace pages, but here’s the last reminder for anybody who wants to contribute to the new book I am doing on Goth, Post-Punk, Horror Rock/Punk, Psychobilly with a graveyard slant, Ethereal, Faery, Dark Ambient, Dark Country, and forms of interesting noir music (which won’t be including neo-folk, ebm, bogstandard Industrial or other forms of music best left to writers who understand those scenes). I am doing a new book on Goth, my fifth on the subject, to be published this Summer by Cherry Red, and Obviously I want this to be a fully International book, which is why I am posting requests worldwide.

Some people have asked if they have to pay to be in this? The answer is a very simple NO! I am shocked to hear of this. I don’t know if other people doing music books have asked people to pay to be in them but I certainly haven’t, nor ever will. So, if in any doubt, it is free. I write books, publishers print them. I am doing a new book on Goth, this time concentrating solely on bands, in the Goth genre itself, and overlapping scenes of Deathrock, Punk Noire, Post-Punk, Ethereal, Heavenly Voices, Faery, Ambient, Dark electronics/folk/country, Neo-classical, Horror Rock, Gothabilly and all the rest. (I am not interested in Neo-folk, club-style electronics/electro, Art-Noise which I see as Indie, or mainstream Industrial which is decorated Rock.)

I am going through all the lists I have assembled to send out info requests but if you see this first and beat me to it then hurrah! Also, for any new bands I may not be aware of you, but once you see this please join in. If you are not in a band but wish to recommend some likely urls please feel free. (Please don’t post any info here but send to the requested locations behind the cut.) Obviously I want this to be a fully International book, which is why I am posting requests worldwide.

CONTENTS:

A riotously good ANDI SEX GANG interview concerning his new album.

UK Punk trio with lashing of humour, CHESTER; two of whom are also mad abut Goth, and their ‘Goth Classic’ is a Goth pastiche/tribute better than Action Pact’s ‘Gothic Party Time’ (which was actually a mocking pisstake, although many people still don’t know that).

MAX EIDER, on his ‘Back In The Bedroom’ album, a man who doesn’t release many albums but when he does they’re crackers. (You may recall him from his work with The Jazz Butcher or David J.)

We have the awesome HERB PROJECT, a French duo who deal in ‘Cathartic Goth’ and you’ll quickly discover they’re not your average couple.

There’s an epic encounter with the supremely talented PRISCILLA HERNÁNDEZ, whose Faery-Ethereal ‘Ancient Shadows’ album is a mesmerising piece of work. It’s rare to find someone was has turned down deals to remain independent, but then she’s a rare talent.

We have PLACE4TEARS, Tyves Oben’s Goth/Shoegaze band, and we also take in Tyves’ magazine ‘Crawling Tunes.’ He’s definitely on the artists’ side. A trouper.

And finally, a look back at a band I only recently discovered, THE SLEEP OF REASON, whose solitary single and a live show appeared on an old Projekt CD, ‘A Logical End’, which was so good I had to ask Oscar Herrera (also in Black Tape For a Blue Girl) to take me through their brief history. (Definitely a band who should have gone on to better things.)

THE MICK 40 is a beast at 9mb (230 pages) but hopefully makes up for a year in which ill health too often reduced my output, which always prays on my mind like a priest on my head. A couple of hundred reviews, my top 10 Albums of 2007, plus interviews the like of which you simply won’t find in traditional Goth magazines. I have the luxury of space and use it to tease out detail print mags can’t emulate, on top of which I’ve been lucky enough to hit upon the most articulate individuals and the depth is here for all to see – really enjoyable and intriguing, imaginative chats with And Also The Trees, Ataraxia, Cult With No Name, Deadchosvky, Hannah Fury, Niceville, Starcry and Uninvited Guest. Seriously, you’ll love it. Even if you are not into these particular bands, or have yet to encounter them, the way they discuss things will keep you gripped.
