Joining various websites...
My dinky little website isn't being picked up in Google - or rather, if it does appear, it's buried so far back in the results. I'm disgusted by this so what I want to do is join tons of genealogy websites and encourage my results to appear higher on Google. I'd love for other cousins to discover my stuff and give me information I need.

Would anyone happen to know any websites? I'd like to join websites that are free and appear on Google. That rules out ancestry.com obviously! ;) I'm not sure about rootsweb.com. My uncle's information isn't being picked up on Google from that site and it's been around a couple years now.

I'd also like to find sites where I can put the information in myself instead of relying on a funky GED file that's generated for it - but that's not required.

I found tribalpages.com and gencircles.com but haven't looked through them yet. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Any other suggestions? I want to splash my information everywhere as possible now that I have a bit of time. Thanks!

I just did a google search by typing in "free" "genealogy" and several items came up. So give that a try.

I hope that didn't come across as being "snotty" because I sure didn't mean for it to be.

I did notice that rootsweb.com come is listed as being free. I do use them quite often or actually I used to use them quite often. I haven't been doing any genealogy lately so ......

Also you may want to check out: http://www.cyndislist.com/

I hope this helps.

Here's a good page that's generally about getting your search higher-up in google:

Content has helped me increase Google rankings. The most popular page on my web site is my resources page. It has a lot of links that go to other related sites, and it has some good key phrases that get picked up by search engines.

Also, make sure your pages have names like "Jones Family Genealogy" or something descriptive like that so people will click on it when they see it in Google results. There are so many web sites out there whose home pages is just called "index."

If you ever comment on other people's blogs/web sites, include the URL to your web site. Search engines pick up the comments pages, too.

Good luck. It takes time to build traffic, but it will happen. :)

I agree that it takes time to build traffic and that you need to have all your pages labeled with "Jones Family Genealogy". My site started slow, but now comes up fairly high in the rankings if you google the family name. I'm on Geocities; have been there for years.

Dittoing what everyone else said with labeling the pages and spreading your URL around anywhere it's pertinent. Also, if you have a main page, submit it to Google. You may have to do it a few times for the information to show up.

If you're not too concerned about format and want to add your own content (stories, pictures, etc), livejournal is great at showing up in search results!
