| Capsoff Keyboard Contest |
[Dec. 19th, 2006|10:15 pm] |

Hi Everyone! I need your help! The Capsoff Keyboard contest is coming to a close, and only a 125 vote have been cast! It's a great competition that just hasn't drawn the attention it deserves.
The premise behind the contest is simple. The design of the modern keyboard is hopelessly out of date. Specifically, the Caps Lock key has become superfluous - a relic of the age of the typewriter. This contest invites entrants to submit an original design for a new keyboard standard. All of the entries are subject to rejection by the site's moderator, but after acceptance, entries are openly voted on by visitors. The winner receives the donated prized money, which is currently up to $241.71.

It's been over a year since my last post. I grew rather bored of constantly posting and receiving so few replies, and I found it rather frustrating that I had so little control over my blog's appearance. This fall, though, my fingers began itching for an outlet. So, November 1st, I began a new blog, The Great Geek Manual
The Great Geek Manual will cover the same subject matter I covered with in my Livejournal Communities: Geeky humor, robotics, science news, weekly link directories, wild rants, etc. In addition, I hope to accumulate the best tutorials on a wide range of topics from around the web. If you enjoyed my Livejournal, you'll definitely enjoy The Great Geek Manual Please come on over and take a look!
Weekly Features Daily: This Day in Geek History

| | The Birth of a Castastrophe by With Broken Wings | ] | This week I got to attended the Computer in Libraries 2006 conference by InfoToday in DC. I shortly realized that I am truly a geek because I work with computers in a library. :oP
Here is a geeky link for you all to try curtsey of the Computer in Libraries conference. A french company called Exalead as created an amazing search engine that uses intutive thinking. Which means if you enter the word or phrase it will give you a range for related topics, then you can sort them based on type of file and/or catergory the website is listed under. My favorite features are the Phonetic search (sense I am a HORRIBLE speller) and the quick view/thumbnail of the website (excellent for the visual memory). When you click on the webpage it will give you a quick view of the page, then show you where all the words from your search are in the page. EXCELLENT tool! Seriously. Check it out.
Unfortunately, you only have the web based search, but it can be used for your computer and network drives. Excellent neat tool. |

| REALbasic |
[Mar. 20th, 2006|12:08 pm] |

Does anyone here have any experience with REALbasic? I am looking for something quick to learn to create some basic programs (don't have the time to learn or need the power of something like C++). Or if you aren't familiar with it, does anyone have any recommendations for something that doesn't have a giant learning curve attached to it? Thanks! |

| Programming |
[Jan. 21st, 2006|01:50 am] |
I am signed up this semester for VB.Net programming and Java Programming. Are there any certifications that I am able to get with taking a semester of programming in either of these languages.
Also how hard will it be to make a program that would be able to obtain pricing information from one sight and compare the this pricing information to that of another site? For example, if I wanted to compare the difference of the price of an item at Best Buy and Circuit City, so the program would pull the pricing info from the bestbuy.com and circuitcity.com website and let me know the difference between the two. Which programming language would handle pulling the pricing information of the two sites better. Is there a certain library for either language that I would have to call upon, that I would not learn in either of my classes? Thanks for any input on this. |

| Miyazaki's Son Adapts "Earthsea" |
[Jan. 4th, 2006|09:09 am] |

Woot! For all those of you out there who so recently suffered the sting of SciFi Channel's wretched adaptation of Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea series, there is good news on the horizon. Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle) has officially announced that it's next project will be Gedo Senki ("Gedo War History"), an adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's novel "A Wizard of Earthsea," the first book of the award-winning Earthsea cycle which includes "The Tombs of Atuan," "The Farthest Shore" and "Tehanu" reports Coming Soon.
"Wizard of Earthsea" centers on Ged, who was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea. He was once called Sparrowhawk, a reckless youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. It's the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.
The film is directed by Hayao Miyazaki's (famous director, best known in the US for Spirited Away) son, Goro, and is scheduled for release July, 2006 in Japan. Mark it down in your calendar, and make room on your hard drive; I predict the movie will hit bittorrent about ten minutes after it hits the screen. |

| Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Torrent |
[Jul. 16th, 2005|08:39 pm] |
Unless you're Amish (in which case, why are you reading this blog), you already know that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, JK Rowling's sixth installment in the Harry Potter series, was released just after the stroke of midnight this morning. It should be no surprise whatsoever, that the book hit the net just hours later. Of course, as with the release of any long-awaited media, the release of the file onto the Internet was obscured by a swirling cloud of misdirection and porn links. After several hours of sifting through pranks and smut, though, I've isolated a quality file. This link leads to a torrent containing "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" in three formats: .doc, .pdf, and .txt. Despite the amazingly small size of the torrent (2.18M), all three files seem to be complete and unaltered from the original. The torrent is named "Harry_Potter_and_the_Half-Blood_Prince-2005-Full_Release.zip.torrent" and it can be found here: http://www.mininova.org/tor/74004
If the file does change, or if the link fails, please post a notice here for all to see. Pass the news along, happy reading, and most important of all ... you didn't hear it from me. |

| Half Blood Prince Reaches Public! |
[Jul. 13th, 2005|09:28 am] |
Let the games begin! This morning, CNN reported that yestereday SIXTEEN advanced copies of the next Harry Potter book were sold! Two from one small Canadian convenience store, and fourteen from a Canadan bookstore. The two sold at the convenience store were both returned almost immediately, much to the disappointment of a nine year old who was only two pages into the story. But the bookstore has been unable to track down all fourteen copies that it leaked!!! That means there are copies out there RIGHT NOW. I've spent the morning Googling like hell, but with no luck. I was hoping one of the twelve had leaked scans or text files or something, but evidently not. Still *crosses fingers*.
I have an on-going bet with my little brother that I'll be able to find a copy on the Internet before he gets ahold of a legit copy. I won with Order of the Phoenix, but lost with Goblet of Fire. This book is the tie breaker, and the odds aren't in my favor with this new felony penalty for pre-releases. *pppppppppppp* |

| "Pixilated" Roots |
[Jul. 3rd, 2005|07:35 am] |
I thought that this was interesting. This morning, I watched "Mr. Deeds goes to Town" (released in 1936) on the Turner Classic Movies channel. Towards the end of the film, Mr. Deeds is accused of being mentally unsound by his attournies, who want to control Mr. Deeds' newly inherited fortune. In the courtroom scene, two old women accuse Mr. Deeds of being "pixelated". When the judge expresses confusion over the term, the psychiatrist turns and explains, "Perhaps I can explain, Your Honor. The word pixilated is an early American expression - derived from the word 'pixies,' meaning elves. They would say, 'The pixies had got him,' as we nowadays would say a man is 'balmy.'"

    | Written by a certified Arabic linguist from the Defense Language Institute with extensive background in decoding encrypted communications, this cyber-thriller uses a fictional narrative to provide a fascinating and realistic "insiders look" into technically sophisticated covert terrorist communications over the Internet. The accompanying CD allows readers to "hack along" with the story line, by viewing the same Web sites described in the book containing encrypted, covert communications." Unfortunately, the cd is not included in this download.
