Trick, No Treat [01 Nov 2009|11:00pm]

Hey, y'all.

So much fur being ready to install Win 7--it appears the graphics card on my desktop appears to have gone kaput.  I turn it on, but no signal goes to my monitor.

I did all my troubleshooting steps--reboot, connecting my monitor to my laptop to see if the monitor worked (it does), even tried pulling it out and reseating it.  Nothing.

The card is an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT.  I'll spare y'all the stupidity of the HP tech support agent; he says it's the motherboard that's shot, but I doubt that.  Now, I can find a GeForce 7600 GS card fur fairly cheap, but it'd be a step down in terms of performance from the 7600 GT.  Personally, I would rather switch to an ATI card altogether, but I just want my desktop to work ASAP.

I just hope I'm right about this; I can't afford another desktop, nor do I want one....

7th Heaven? [25 Oct 2009|08:44am]

Hey, y'all.

So, through my university's channels, I managed to get my paws on a copy of Windows 7 Professional.  I would totally love to put it on my desktop.

However, my desktop currently has Vista Ultimate, and since my copy of Win7 isn't also Ultimate (my school isn't offuring any other version), it says I have to do a clean install.  I'm not too worried about doing that.  What I am wondering is: will I be missing anything by not going out and getting Win7 Ultimate?  According to Big M, the only differences are that Ultimate has BitLocker & Multilanguage support.  Now, I also got the Multilanguage DVD with Win7 Pro...but is BitLocker a "must-have?"  I'm pretty vigilant when it comes to my own data security, I feel.

Anyways, just want some other opinions.  That's it from me; peace out.

Anybody interested in a Koolance Exos and waterblocks? [16 Oct 2009|09:15pm]

So I just tore down my old system and have an Koolance Exos I no longer need--anybody interested?

http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info.php?product_id=376

It's not this style, it's the previous generation with 3x 80mm fans and the detachable nozzles at the back. Everything's included and complete, including a CPU-200G waterblock and bracket (http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info.php?product_id=115 , I honestly think this is the same block, only the center mounting style is a little different) and a generic chipset waterblock (http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info.php?product_id=104), including the back plate with the spring hoses and pass-through circuits, the thermal probe, the motherboard power splitter so it turns on the pumps when you hit the switch...I can throw in a X800 waterblock if you want, my X800 wasn't compatible with the reference block design so I never could use it. All you'd need is maybe a socket adapter and a bottle of coolant from Koolance and you'd be good to go--your own stylish silver watercooling solution! I'd like to see $150 for the whole thing plus whatever shipping runs. C'mon, who wants this? (xposted to personal journal)

Got Some Sun Microsystems Workstation Hardware I Wanted To Show Off [15 Jul 2009|12:40am]

rilohusky
I started collecting "older" Sun Microsystems workstations a few months back. Just thought I'd share my collection-in-progress with everyone. :]

Home Data Center So Far )

I also wanted to ask whether anyone had experience installing a recent version of OpenSolaris on UltraSPARC hardware ( or Linux or *BSD for that matter... ). There seem to be several methods to get that done, none of which are easy. Just looking for some feedback on which way seems least complex. :]

Help with Internet Explorer. [03 Jul 2009|05:26pm]

mewmew
I need help getting the address/etc. bars in Internet Explorer reorganized, and getting the "autohide" for the task bar turned off. One of our cats ran across her keyboard and she's not sure what keys were hit but it messed up how Internet Explorer looks. It also makes the task bar hide itself whenever you click on the IE window. There aren't any problems with FireFox, just IE. She uses Windows 2000, and I think has the most recent version of IE that is compatible with that version of windows.

I'm not sure what to do to get it back and I don't want to have to keep messing with it so I'm hoping someone can help out. I'm afraid I don't know enough about computers to give any more information than I have given so far.

laptop battery [17 Jun 2009|06:13pm]

stauros
My Toshiba Satellite (A100, purchased 2006, to be specific) got weird last weekend. I plugged it in to get it good and charged, but when I started it up several hours later the battery was at 4% and I had to stay on AC. After a few hours of use it was at 6%. I left it plugged in but shut down overnight and Sunday morning it was 8%. Then Sunday evening I fired it up again and it was around 85%, charging to 99% before I turned it off. It never gets to 100%.

So, does this mean I need a new battery? If not, how do I troubleshoot and fix this? If so, can anyone recommend sources for a reliable cheap one?

It figures my extended warranty expired three months ago. :P

Win 7 RC1 [01 May 2009|08:12am]

It looks like it's that time. For those that haven't heard/seen yet, Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 is live. Currently anyone with developer access with Microsoft can go download it, for the rest of us it becomes free to the public on the 5th. Same deal as with the Beta, go to the site, put in Windows Live info and they give you a key and disc image (32 or 64 bit).

I think I'm gonna give it a try since I missed the beta, probably dual-boot my current system. I'd try it on my laptop but that thing would probably instagib anyways.

We shall see how this goes. =^-^=

Question for using UStream. [20 Mar 2009|02:07pm]

mewmew
I'm trying to figure out what all I need to do. I recently found out about the site UStream, and I want to be able to do "shows" where I'm drawing, maybe taking suggestions from people, so I can work on my art skills. But, I don't know how to make sure it will show me drawing, or if I can use a mouse and Photoshop for it. I was talking to a friend and he said I would need some kind of program to broadcast what's on my monitor, but I don't know what to look for or where to get it. Does anybody know what I would need?

ATI vs. nVidia

Some of you might have seen my post the other day (two or three posts back now) regarding building a new computer.

I initially wanted to go with an AMD processor and dual nVidia GPUs (in SLI) mostly due to the fact that in the past ATI has given me a lot of trouble with games where nVidia has never given me a single problem.

I'm hearing more and more suggestions that the Core i7 processors are better all around but a lot of comments I've seen on i7 motherboards are saying they don't support SLI (at least not well if at all), but they do all seem to support ATI Crossfire quite well.

If I went ATI I was thinking of this one, which actually has better clock speeds than the nVidia but a lower memory interface bit rate.

My main concern, has ATI really improved over the last few years such that their drivers and cards don't cause a lot of problems or is nVidia still better? I'm afraid I've been a bit out of the loop >_>

Good PC Specs? [04 Mar 2009|01:40am]

richter_x
I recently picked out parts for a new PC build to replace my ancient HP Pavilion xt953. I was just wondering if someone could give them a good looking-over to see if I needed to switch anything out.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=10885466

My plans for this are rather unique I would guess. I plan on using it as a much needed upgrade to my home theater + gaming setup. Not only will I be using the 1080p monitor for High-Def gaming and watching Blu-Ray movies, but I also intend on hooking it up to my Onkyo HT-SR700 home theater system, as well as my Sanyo Flatscreen CRT monitor (analog w/ component inputs).

So with the graphics card and sound cards I picked, it should connect to both of these perfectly fine, right? If so, can I also run one game on the LCD and a different one on the CRT? I plan on using the CRT for playing console emulators on, and I'd also like to do normal PC things (or have a friend play another game) on the LCD while I'm doing so.

Will heating/power be an issue with this setup? Will I need any extra cooling for it, or will the stock cooling work fine on it. I don't intend on doing any kind of overclocking on it whatsoever.

As for the two hard drives, I'm pondering whether to run them in a RAID configuration so that apps load faster on it, or to just leave them as they are.

New compy opinions :P [03 Mar 2009|08:51am]

acamori
So, I just built a new computer for my mate after his went out, he was due for one (had a P4 2.4GHz, it was getting on in years :P ) and realized that mine really wasn't that great anymore, it's getting on to 3-4 years old actually.

So, I decided to go build (at least a wishlist for) a new comp on NewEgg.

I was wondering if anyone might have suggestions for do or don't on anything in particular.

A few notes:

I'm going to start with one video card, PSU and probably only 4GB of the RAM. And I'm likely not getting the monitor until later either (I have a pretty good 17" LCD, it just doesn't have DVI input and I'd like a new one eventually :P )

I'm going with DDR2 800 instead of 1066 because I keep seeing notes with various MoBos (this one included) saying something about AMD processors is limiting how many DIMMs can run at 1066. Figure if they resolve the issue I'll upgrade later.

And the fans... 4 of them are going on the side panel to replace the one 230mm and add some nice red glowfulness, the last one will be for the top vent when the second PSU is in since the stock fan would be in the way.

lemme know what you think ^_^

I recently put Noscript into Firefox. It's wonderful, doing all sorts of wonderful things. I've noticed the first problem here though. A few minutes ago, I tried posting an embedded youtbue video in an LJ comment, and was getting an error. Seems Noscript was seeing something bad in the script you paste for embedding youtube videos, and blocking the script. This then caused trouble with LJ, keeping the comment from being posted. At least that's what I think is going on.

Embedding youtube videos is something I want to do, somewhat frequently. The XSS tab in the noscript options shows a whitelist, which checks the code of a script to see if it's allowed. Some URL-like mumbo-jumbo was in there for Google and yahoo to let their searches work right, is there a bit of mumbo-jumbo to put in there to let youtube embeds through?

Oregon Voted Obama! Huzzah!

Even though I am conservative, I am hoping for change just as much as everyone else :) congratulations to the first black president! Lets hope he can handle the crisis's ahead!

Also Keep in mind that just because someone has a different political opinion then you does not mean you cannot be friends ;) It is very foolish to lose a friend over difference in political opinion ;) make up with your friends, then divide after 4 more years ;) that is the joy of our first amendment right!

OK, here's what's up.

I'm running Linux, carrying a Palm, and eventually, I'm looking to transition to that G1 phone that T-Mobile US is putting out on the streets come a week and a half from now. Slick phone, I've played with it, but I see no efficient way to transition my contacts from my palm to the G1.

So I need to find something, and am hoping for some help.

To explain, Google has a mechanism that I can import a .csv to the contacts list, and it pulls the data in - but then I have to rearrange it. A .vcf might work, but not too well, it seems - it only imports basic information to the database as it finds it. The device, itself, doesn't even deal with .vcf, in fact.

Jpilot has an export option, where I can export to .vcf or .csv, but the .csv doesn't export the pictures, and the .vcf doesn't get the pictures imported when pulled into google.

I can theoretically use Evolution, but that obscures much of the data, as near as I can tell - it doesn't recognize the custom fields in the Palm.

The Google search, it does nothing.

Any ideas here?

Are there any programmers that like to draw? or artists that like to program?

I'm working on a cross-platform open source art program and I'd really like some help. I'm writing it in python using PyQt. No experience with those is needed, just willingness to work with them. Mostly I'd like help with the line drawing algorithms. I've found it's hard to make lines look right when scaling the size according to tablet input. I'd really love some fresh ideas or someone to tweak the line drawing code. Generally coding help would also be much appreciated.

If anyone is interested in helping just comment here or email: skitzycat@yahoo.com

well, i got on Newegg to pick out a new case for my comp, and me being a geek couldn't help seeing what upgrades i could do. given that it's been about 2-3 years since i built my current computer, upgrades tend to be less quick swap than full rebuild.

so, i wound up creating an entirely new PC on Newegg that comes out to about $1589
(all links open new window/tab)

The new case
The monitor
The 3.2GHz AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual-Core
The nVidia GeForce 9600GT video card
The motherboard
The 2GB RAM sticks (x4)
The 1TB 3Gb/s SATA HDD's
A card reader and a good heat sink since i just got one of these and it works like a dream, looks cool too.

Whether or not i get the monitor and/or heat sink depends mostly on if i decide to keep my current computer functional. I'll also be pulling at least two of the 150GB 1.5Gb/s drives out of my current comp to use in RAID 1 as OS and secure storage (the 1TB drives will be in RAID 0). I may also drop down to 500GB or 750GB drives of the same mark to save some money but i figure I'd go all-out with the spec ^_^

Now i just need to save up the money for it >_>
