Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
Chain thingie... pass it on!
Today a coworker of mine had a thought to send flowers to a random couple waiting in line at SF city hall.

He called a florist and they agreed to do it. He told them to deliver to any couple -- it didn't matter who -- standing in line to get married, with his blessing. The card will read simply "With love, from Minneapolis, Minnesota." (or where ever you are from).

Once they understood, they were very touched and thought it was a great idea.

He told another co-worker who did the same thing. And now we want to start a movement. Wouldn't that be cool if people from all over the country, gay, straight and otherwise, started sending flowers to the people waiting in line to get married.

Call it The Big Gay Bouquet call it Flowers from the Heartland. Call it whatever you want, but help us get this off the ground.

Call Flowers on the Bay at 888-217-9119 and order a bouquet to be delivered tomorrow at noon.

And Tell all of your friends to do it.

Because straight or gay, we believe and we know many people who believe, support and celebrate the right to marriage. And we'd like to show it. We'd like to see all of the people standing in line with flowers of support from all over the country.

PS. Flowers on the Bay seems like a small shop and might get overwhelmed if this really did catch on. I have a feeling that any Bay-Area flower shop, perhaps even doing FTD through your local florist, could work.

What a human interest story this would make about a flower shop supporting the people in front of San Francisco City Hall!

I hope someone with connections reads this, calls the news station and see if they can get a short on it! I'd love to see something like this air on my local news!

I wrote to the local media here in Mnpls (where this whole thing started!!! Yay!!!) and asked them to pick it up. Hopefully, they do. I'm so glad that this thing has taken off and that so many people are as excited about it as we are!!

Please, contact your local media! We need to show our support somehow and this is perfect!

I hope it's ok, I just sent a link to this page as well as more florist contact info to press contacts at HRC, GLAAD, PFLAG, Lamda Legal, the Advocate and PlanetOut asking them to pass this idea on to their activist networks. Keep your fingers crossed for MANY bouquets!

The city hall address, incidentally, for those of us who aren't in the Bay, is:

CITY HALL
1 CARLTON B GOODLETT PL
SAN FRANCISCO CA 94102-4603

(Gosh, for some reason the florist wanted to know that! *laugh*)

I used "My Flower Shop"
6126 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94121 Toll Free: 800-883-1185 Local: 415-752-6270

http://www.myflowershopsf.com

Talked to Rich (who is gay and with has been with his partner for 15 years). He thought this was a fun idea and was willing to put together a specialized bouquet to fit my price range. I spent 35$, but it sounds like he'd put something together for any amount.

Hi! I just called Flowers By the Bay, and he said he has 20 deliveries set up for tomorrow (2/20/04) Approximately 35 went today, and they began trickling in on Tuesday. I'm contacting everyone I know, and linking. The arrangements start at $35 Plus $8 for delivery

Here's the info from Rick : He is making hand bouquets (variety of small bridal style) They are $37.98 with tax and delivery. He said there have been about 50 couples out at city Hall at a time.
5-6 orders in for later today, 2 so far for tomorrow, and he took some out this morning at 11 am. He will be in the shop till 5 or 6 PM Pacific Time, and they have the phones ringing "off the hook" today. He offered some other ways to order, and told me what to put in a fax or email. If you send an order after 5:30 PM Pacific, please call his Cell phone 415-307-5015 to let them know so they can plan accordingly for the number coming in.

Fax: 415-752-0122, email: <mailto:myflwrshop@aol.com>

Please include:
Name
Address (billing)
Credit Card Number and Exp Date
Phone Number - in case of questions on order
A Message for the recieving couple

Apparently some couples may want to send thank yous, so please note if he can share your return information with the recipient.

Flowers by the Bay said there would be around 200 couples and he was sure they would all have flowers, they've had so many orders, as of 5:30 west coast time...he said there would be lots of media coverage...

many, many orders for a single rose, as well...he wraps them with ribbons, etc...

call and send a bouquet of flowers to the President of the United States, in the name of one of the couples currently getting married.

distribute the love to the people who really, obviously, need it.

This is an AMAZING idea. I have sent emails to everyone I know and posting the following on a couple listservs. It may easy to just copy and paste this for people who want to pass this along:

Subj: The Big Gay Bouquet

A new grassroots show of support for gay marriage has bloomed.

People all around the nation are sending anonymous bouquets of flowers to random couples waiting in line to get married in San Fransisco.

"Because straight or gay, we believe and we know many people who believe, support and celebrate the right to marriage. And we'd like to show it. We'd like to see all of the people standing in line with flowers of support from all over the country."

If you support the right for anyone in this nation to marry the person whom they love, send a bouqet today!

What a great idea. I will post this in my journal so that other people can see it. All people who are getting married deserve flowers. It does not matter whether they are gay or straight everyone deserves flowers on their happy day.
