Mario Marathon 2: Gaming for Charity!

I'm so surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. I even made sure Xboxer360.com got a post about their marathon, despite Mario really not being a 360-related game ;]

Mario Marathon is a charity event run by three gamers who are playing through all of the major Mario titles non-stop to raise money for Child's Play, a charity dedicated to bringing video games, toys and movies to children’s hospitals worldwide.

As of now, they have raised over $26,000 and have been playing for an astonishing 82hrs.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to MarioMarathon.com, check out the live webcam feed and donate if you're able to!

Be sure to pass this on, tweet about it etc & just get people interested! It's all for a good cause :]

Rambo/Ashura Virtual Console; Also, Alex Kidd on Crack
Rambo for the Sega Master System (which was titled in the West as, Rambo) is on the Virtual Console listed as Secret Command(o).

It probably won't be released as Rambo (they probably don't want to go through that licensing drama) which is why the EU version was probably chosen instead.

It's a game I enjoy much and just wanted to let you guys know (in case there are other fans of the classic) since you might not be familiar with the EU version's name.

Here are some youtube videos. )

What I don't get, is if Sega still has the Rambo license, why they didn't release the Rambo title and/or Secret Command(o)/Ashura?

Also, for anyone who is familiar with the Secret Command(o) version, based on the supplied videos, are there any differences? Are the scoring screens between levels any different?

Any info anyone knows would be awesome.

    *EDIT* From Wikipedia,

"The game was also released in Europe and Australia without the Rambo license under the title of Secret Commando. The Secret Commando uses the same title theme and cut-scenes between stages as the Japanese version, but uses the modified main character sprites from the Rambo version and a new title screen similar to the Ashura version. The instruction manual for the Secret Commando versions once again identifies the main characters as Ashura and Bishamon."

Is anyone familiar with Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars? I used to have this Sega Master System game as well and it's available on the Virtual Console. It's on crack.

    An Interview with Johnny Minkley
I had the chance to poke Johnny Minkley's brain about his work, his favourite games and the best way to become a gaming journalist! For those who aren't aware of who he is (probably most non-UKers), Johnny is an award-winning games expert who runs his own show (Eurogamer TV), has a monthly radio slot as the resident games expert on Radio 1 and an extensive history writing, reviewing and interviewing big names!

The interview can be found here!

    I hope you enjoy :]

    Hi folks,

With SingStar on the PS3, is it possible to play a game with only songs from the SingStore?

To-date I've only been able to play games with the host disc, which means a peculiar mix of songs. And I have a feeling it can't be done, but just to check (and it's bloody annoying if you can't!).

    TIA

    Getting back into console
Just recently my computer was destroyed for the 2nd time by family members and I'm finally sick of it. I decided to buy a new console instead of buying new parts for a new computer since I was gonna pay well over 800 bucks. I looked at the pros and cons of Xbox360, PS3 and the Wii and decided to go with a Xbox because the online gameplay and the hype about all their games. The only thing I'm worried about is going from mouse/keyboard to controller. I've been practicing on the hold Halo but I just been sailing the fail boat since I picked it up. I saw they have hardware programs to let you use your keyboard and mouse by altering your controller to be connected to your computer. I used to play the first halo competitively but then the team broke and went to pc gaming. Played CS and CS:S competitively but then after those teams broke up and all the LANs were done I went to WoW. Yeah I know, going from serious FPS to MMO is ridiculous but it happened. I had fun competing and winning money at LANs for both PC and console but I fell into the hole of raiding for countless hours on WoW. Now that I don't have a good comp and this POS one, I want to get back in the Console scene.

So what are some good ONLINE games to play other then BF:Bad Company, Halo 3 and Gears of War?

Also, should I just get the mouse/keyboard converter or just use the controller?

    Oblivion Midas' Spells mod
I've been getting back into Oblivion and finally got the Midas' Spells mod. I hate having to open the book and flip through the pages to find out what I need to combine for the spells, so I was wondering if there's a master list somewhere online that I could print out to tick off as I'm getting items? I'd like to get all the spells this time through the game to try them all out and see what I like. I googled, but haven't found any lists.

Also, I got the main book, but I hear there's a few others "For Dummies/etc" for other spells, are those included in the mod or are those separate mods working off Midas? I got the most recent version of Midas off tesnexus.com if that matters.

And I just have to say, I got really bored with my 360 vanilla version and stopped playing pretty quick. I decided to give it a second chance when it came up on sale on Steam because I love mods, and I gotta say OOO makes it SO much better and actually a challenge!

    Thanks!

Death in gaming is back in style.

Death is back in style. Just ask blogger and scholar Ben Abraham, who's currently on a new playthrough of last year's African-set shooter Far Cry 2. A typical run through the game's campaign takes 30 or so hours, and you can save your progress along the way. If you succumb to a brushfire or take a hit to the head from a sniper, it's not a big deal: you just jump back to your last save and erase your mistake. But Abraham decided this wasn't enough of a challenge -- so this time he's playing for keeps. Living up to the title of his blog, Sometimes Life Requires Consequences, he's sworn that if he's whacked in the game, he will stop playing. Calling it the "Permanent Death" runthrough, he's been posting detailed notes and screenshots, and other gamers are following his example.

How does it change his play? My fav gaming columnist PixelVixen707 (who's a bit of a puzzle herself) finds out. Click HERE to read her column on death & gaming.

    For those in Houston...
...every first and last Friday of the month Joystix opens it's doors for $15 from 9 - 2 and opens up its machines.  i've gone a few times already this year and for the most part it's mostly the same machines, which is good.  Galaga and Donkey Kong on real hardware can't be beat, I've started to become really fond of Phoenix, and they even have my favorite machine - Major Havoc.  The place is connected to a bar, so you don't get the best folk in there, but for the price, it's the closest thing one can get to an arcade of old.

    Return to gaming!
I fell behind in gaming for a few years.. and I miss it dearly.  I have maintained my status as a gamer via casual gaming on the DS and Wii and Guild Wars for PC, but I'm considering getting either PS3 or a 360 in September (Oh yes.. my student loan will be spent wisely!) to work my way back into gaming as a more regular part of my lifestyle.

If you asked me two months ago which I would get, I would have said PS3 in a heartbeat, because I figured the 360 technology was going to be up for discussion soon and that they would already be planning a release for the next Microsoft console.  However, with E3's reveal of Project Natal, my opinion is now changing.  It seems to me that Project Natal will become the focus, but since it will still require a 360... there will not be a new console yet for at least a few more years.  For me, based on the comparison of already available titles to choose from... the online networking... and price difference... XBOX360 seems to be the best choice.  I am aware of a potential price drop from Sony before the end of summer, but I am inclined to think Microsoft will follow suit with the Elite.

I am curious to know what members here think of Project Natal... and if you believe that its launch will push back the need for a new Microsoft console.  I would just hate to shell out $600 for a new console and all the fixens, only to have it become a paperweight the following year.
