Really? Sorry I didn't know. I have to rely on Zeta to be my sound check guy, since I can't monitor my own mic at all. One million apologies for the issue, I do try to be careful about that sort of thing.

I enjoyed Pokemon Blue/Red back in the day. I've been saying that I'd play a newer one for years now, but its never happened. I almost bought Sapphire, but now I'm seeing these DS version's screen shots...

I got the emerald one thinking I would "catch them all", as they say, before the DS one came out.

I was very into the series through Gold / Silver, I even had a legitimate Mew, but the fact that I couldn't transfer pokemon from gold / silver to ruby / sapphire turned me off the series.

Hearing that the DS one would be backwards compatable and the fact that they remade Red/Blue for advance got me back into it.

I even got pokemon coliseum, which isn't as bad as one would think. It even has a whole game where you walk around, unlike stadium which was more of an accesory.

I have even been eyeing "Pokemon Box" as it is a bitch and a half to move pokemon around otherwise. You can only trade, so to get all the pokemon on one cart, you have to have a pile of crap pokemon to trade off first. Plus you can only trade them one at a time in groups of six and it saves after every trade, so it takes forever.

Have you read of the WiFi aspects of the DS Pokemon? (Pearl/Diamond)

Washington, Washington. Six foot ten, fscking killing for fun.

I beat FFX in Japanese. It was a stupid amount of work to have better voice acting.

Xenogears>>> Was cake if you used EtherDoublers and Power Magics. However, the fight when you're all alone with Elly/Vierge was insane.

He's coming, he's coming, he's coming.

Gameworks Seattle is teh win, but I recall it being stupidly expensive. They had an R-360 when I was there many years ago.

I had Fighting Street on TG-16 CD. Fireball, Dragon Punch, and Hurricane Kick I believe all required just frame input for every step. They were impossible to do but did 40% damage per hit. Eagle, Adon, and Sagat were crazy hard. I could never beat Sagat legitimately, since two Tiger Shots would kill you.

Feature-rich!

He had two sets of testicles (so divine)!

Fact: I have beaten Fighting Street legitimately. W00t!

I actually did play all the way through Pokemon Red, but no other one since then. I even dabbled in the CCG a bit back before it even caught on with the kids. Then I went to Toy'R'Us sponsored Pokemon events and smashed little kids to get rare bonus cards. Nothing was more delicious than watching little Tommy's dreams die by the hand of my Charizard.

Hey guys - SpotAnime here. Another great podcast! It's refreshing to hear a podcast that isn't like the droves of others that just read the news. You guys are truly hardcore. Where else can you hear a couple of guys able to reference any move from any fighter, from almost every 2D fighting game made? GFR, baby! Dork up!

The Xbox demo disc to which you are referring is the Xbox Exhibition Demo Disc Vol. 2:

http://xbox.ign.com/objects/498/498720.html

It's basically the full Japanese version, correct. The only difference, other than not being able to save your profile, is that the full US version was online compatible - the demo, and Japanese version, is not. The best thing? The disc retailed for $8 when it was released, and you can probably pick it up on eBay for a couple bucks now.

And to second Zeta's review - Grand Prix is a great film. I too just picked it up on DVD. I haven't watched it yet, but I was able to finally throw away my old two-tape VHS retail LBX copy in favor of this much supervior version. The film was directed by John Frankenheimer, and he used some of the same filmmaking techniques in his 1998 film Ronin. If you haven't seen it, and love car chases, It is well worth the $15 bones for the newly-released two-disc SE that just came out a couple months back.

And just one more compliment - I started listening to you guys back in episode 7, I think, when Zeta gave his dissertation on the History of Transformers. I was instantly hooked. As I said before, you guys know your shit. Every episode is a history lesson in video games or anime, or a flashback to truly classic gaming. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to many many GFR episodes to come!

Jeremy

Wow...I'm speechless for once...

Thanks SpotAnime, it's comments like this that reward Zeta for his toil in audio production, and other efforts. Myself, I really just try to keep everyone entertained as possible. The props are much appreciated.

Also excellent job on tracking down that demo disc. I don't actually own the disc or anything else, I just copied it from someone (Tommunist perhaps?).

GFR isn't making us any money, it's all about the love.

I just recommended you guys on CheapAssGamer as an "alternative" to their CAGCast. Hopefully you'll get some new listeners because of it. I've always had you as a "SpotApproved Podcast" link from my site, but I don't get a lot of traffic. Only recently has traffic improved, ever since I was linked from CAG and then Joystiq for the Carnival of Gamers for my "The Lester Bangs of Video Games is Under Our Noses" article.

And Zeta - Grand Prix, after not appearing on DVD for so long, is getting an HD-DVD release in September. Damn, never fails! Might be one of the few I double-dip.

I get hints of where you guys live, I know Kaze is in Illinois (Bloomington? ISU?), and I think Zeta is in Ohio. I used to live in Chicago until I moved out to NYC and then now in Philly. Where are you guys exactly? Kaze, how are your relocation plans going?

Arlington Heights is pretty sweet. Close enough to Schaumburg, Deerfield, Skokie, etc. I used to work in Deerfield, there was a good boutique gamestore in Buffalo Grove, but that was five or six years ago and it's probably gone by now. There was also a pretty good arcade off of Dundee Rd on Sanders Rd near the I-294 ramp. I can't remember what it was called but I used to go there at lunch. It was a $3 cover and nickel plays during lunch, and they were one of the few places with a Virtual On cabinet. Lots of fighters from what I can remember, like Rival Schools and stuff.

I don't know if Gameworks is still at Streets of Schaumburg, but I used to go there quite a bit for Guitar Freaks and Pod Racer. And there used to be a pretty popular import game store on Golf Rd - popular because the owner was a jerk and overpriced everything - but they still had a good selection. This was in the days before the internet, so he's probably out of business by now.

A tip - there's a Toys R Us in Deerfield that's pretty tucked away, and they are famous for having some seriously awesome closeout deals. They always had stock in hard-to-find stuff. Back in 2000 I got my Saturn Netlink there for $10, and picked up a couple Saturn Arcade Sticks for cheap. There's also a Target on Skokie or Waukegan, one of those, that's just around the corner that also had some good clearance stuff back in the day. Happy pickings there.

I was going to recommend moving to the Chicago West Suburbs instead of out West - it's affordable (sort of), the weather is better, and you'll find your share of ethnicity as much as anywhere else. Like you said, Mitsuwa's and that whole neighborhood of Japanese families. See, Chicago has something most places on the East Coast don't. There is such a great diversity in the companies in that area - Motorola, 3Com (or whatever they are now), Tech, Finance, Insurance, Health Care, Retail, Food Services like McDonald's. There's pretty much everything right there, and that attracts a lot of talent. I think of that area as "the West Coast of the Midwest". It's as close as you are going to get to California without actually moving there. Oh, and here's an interesting fact - Konami of America actually was based in Buffalo Grove for a time, off Deerfield Pwy and Weiland by the train tracks. It was where Castlevania was being developed for the DC. It was a small office building, and I worked in the same complex (Discover Card had offices off-campus for a short time). They left the Konami flag flying for a while after Konami shut down the US offices, but my friends and I always fascinated about what they actually left behind. It'd be nice to get a hold of an abandoned Castlevania DC...but again, that was like five years ago. I'd doubt you would find the flag flying still.

I got my wife hooked on Stir Crazy during trips back home, and I'm jonesing for a good pizza out here like Edwardo's or Lou Malnati's. NYC pizza is good but nothing like deep dish. Happy eating out there!

Oh yeah, and my second guess for Zeta is Ann Arbor. ?

More later...

Wow thanks for all the mad Chi-town info.

I never wanted to live out east, as West Coast is the best coast.

I hate the weather in Illinois, so I'm looking forward to leaving in a few years.

Giordano's is the best pizza Chicago has to offer so far. I actually had a taste of Lou Malnati's and I wasn't very impressed. It's okay, but seriously no match for Old Chicago or Giordano's.

As for Zeta, well you're pretty close with that guess. He acutally toured me through Ann Arbor once, it was really awesome. Just too far north for me to want to live there.

So how did you and Kaze meet?

Giordano's isn't my favorite, but I can see why some people like it. The sauce is too spicy. Edwardo's is like Giordano's but the sauce is sweeter. I can't remember if the crusts are comparable, but Edwardo's buttery crusts are freakin' great. There's a place in downtown Naperville called Brick Oven Pizza (I think - it used to be called Leonardo's) that's just like Edwardo's. Really juicy, sweet tomato sauce that dominates the pizza. Lou's is completely different - it's not about the sauce at all, but the cheese. It has a mix of mozzarella and parmesan that makes it. Uno's is trash - it's all about the toppings. And Gino's has a really dry crust but the sausage patty pie is really good. Yeah, I'm a bit of a pizza connoisseur. I've had my share of NYC when I lived in Manhattan and it's good, but it's not a meal like Chicago pizza. The best place in NYC is Lombardi's, the oldest pizza restaurant in America.

That's very true. Tournies I choked in...

Soul Calibur 2 - twice!
Tekken 3
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
CVS2 - Midwest Championships
Tekken Tag - Peoria Championships

By choking Tom means that during "Freeplay" or whathaveyou, I'm basically running the gauntlet and racking up huge win streaks. Then I get into the tourney and lose to someone I had just wreaked havoc on minutes ago.

I've won Tekken Tag, Pocket Fighter, DDR Team FreeStyle (ya had to be there), DDR Single Freestyle, got 2nd in CVS2, 2nd in MVC2 (lost both to Tad if I remember correctly), Won a few SC2, and many SC3 tournies.

So yeah I'm just "good" at fighting games. Not great, just good.

This trend pretty much holds true for about everything I've ever done.
