FCN 2010 DJ Auditions Open!

That's right, Furry Connection North is accepting DJ auditions for 2010!

Demo mixes should be between 30 and 60 minutes. The mix should accurately reflect your personal mixing style and genre. Get picked and don't want to lug your gear? No problem! FCN has a pair of turntables (Stanton T60X w/ Shure M25C cartridges, though bringing your own cartridges is preferred), a pair of CDJs (Stanton S252), and a mixer (Audio Innovate AEM-100i) ready to use. Keep in mind, we prefer to have selected deejays bring their own gear. We'll provide the hookup to our sound system.

Selected deejays must have a valid registration to the convention. FCN cannot compensate deejays for their badges.

Anthrocon 2009 DJ Spotlight: TekFox

Anthrocon features some of the most talented DJs in the Furry Fandom, but who are they really? We'll be taking some time in the weeks running up to the convention to let you know, in their own words, what makes them tick and what you can expect from their sets.

Anthrocon is just days away, and with this final DJ Spotlight we turn our attention to one of the best DJs both inside and outside of Furry Fandom, TekFox!

Biography:

Tekfox has been dropping beats and making heads nod for as long as I can remember. I've been following him for the better part of 6 years, studying and learning everything about him. This elusive fox is difficult to pin down, moving from genre to genre over the course of his musical career he finally decided to settle into a cozy corner of the obscure, enjoying his glitchy rythems, and deep basslines. A true master behind the decks, measured at over 9000, his energy, technical ability and ego are rivaled only by his humility.

A true social creature by nature, Tekfox is known to be found wandering around conventions speaking of musical endavors, sharing the gospel of dubstep, and the love of his craft with anyone who will listen. His only natrual predators are other DJs, LFOs, gin & tonics, and trance music. When cornered and sensing danger Tekfox uses his intoxifying beats to draw DJs in and drop lightbulbs on their heads (true story!). Approach with cautious optimisim.

Like a lotus flower blooming, Tekfox will be making his yearly Anthrocon appearance. The heavy dnb beats from this fox are unmistakable, and unavoidable. Make sure you arrive early, drink plenty (of water), and wear head protection as lightbulbs have been known to rain down from above.

That's all! Anthrocon is this weekend, with dances on every night of the convention, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, until 2am each night. There's even a Dead Dog dance on Sunday! So I hope to see many of you there. I know I can't wait!!

Some of the artists playing will be Uplift (UK), Dupont, Viper, Milo, Impact (UK), and many more including MC Jumper (from Happy2BHardcore cds), MC High IQ, MC Casper (Next Generation, Blatant Beats Recordings), and MC Gazzy J! For those that think Hardcore music is dead, think again! With nothing but Hardcore on the /main/ stage all night, and a 2nd room of nothing but hardcore all night, this is sure to be a wake up call to those that think great hardcore parties are a thing of the past! In the 3rd room, we'll be having assorted genres like trance, house, breaks and drum & bass, and plenty of great dj's in the room too. Multi-colored laser shows, state of the art EAW sound, and a HUGE nightclub atmosphere make Exit the club you'll not soon forget. All are welcome over the age of 18 with proper ID, and please remember NO DRUGS. ROAR in full effect. See you all in NYC!

Many of Sc@r's productions can be heard on the underground hardcore label Raw Elements and Executive Records, both of which draw influences in from classic old skool sounds, to big euphoric trance riffs, mixing strong piano riffs, vocals, breakbeats, and everything in between. Since earning her first vinyl release in 2007 with Lift Off and Dreamtime on Raw Elements, it wasn't long before her name was featured on album compilations including the internationally respected Bonkers, 100 Hardcore Anthems, the Hardcore Underground series, and soon to be released in the upcoming months: Hardcore Addiction and Crush on Hardcore. When the rave scene first hit Toronto back in 1992, Ken, who was instantaneously attracted to the new sound of Hardcore Techno, made a new path in life and dove in head first. Spinning under the pseudonym Viper, on his five-hour radio program 'RUSH' on CHRY 105.5 FM in Toronto, Ken is credited with being the first DJ to spin Happy Hardcore over North American radio airwaves. In 1994, Ken introduced Toronto to world-class gatherings while providing the best international and local DJ talent. With crowds reaching over 4,000 in attendance, Viper was fast becoming much more than just a DJ. After countless performances all around the globe, 8 years later Viper finally made the leap and started producing his own tracks in 2000. After a blazing performance it was obvious they worked well together and the two came up with their new tag moniker, Pinky & The Brain. The driving force behind the Floorburnerz, for the last 7 years Dupont and Soundstream have spent countless hours perfecting their styles and rocking dance floor after dance floor. From Maine to Maryland, Baltimore to Boston, Philly to New York City, Pinky & The Brain has quickly become one of the East Coast's most popular tag team duos. It was 2005 before Joey, aka Starkiss, got his first taste of Happy Hardcore music. Attending an all age's rave in Philadelphia, Starkiss met, one of his now favorite DJs, Candy Kid. Shortly after that meeting, Joey started buying records and eventually bought his first set of turntables. Under the tutelage of DJ Candy Kid, Starkiss spent the next two years learning the art of DJing. Finally catching a break when Mickey, from Tru Skool Productions, gave him his first booking, Joey made his first public appearance in 2007. Without looking back, Starkiss has spent the last two years polishing his mixing while entertaining crowd after crowd, up and down the East Coast, with his unmatched track selection and seamless mixing. Making his first Candyball appearance, Starkiss is coming to show you why he has quickly become one of Philly's favorite Happy Hardcore DJs!

Learning how to mix on a pair of old belt-drive decks, it was 1993 when Uplift first started buying records and perfecting his craft. During the Autumn of 2000, Uplift decided it was time to start pushing his name as a producer, as well as a DJ, and so he ventured into the studio and got to work. With Hardcore vinyl in short supply around that time, Uplift decided to start his own record label, Raw Elements, and has been producing smash hits ever since. A resident at Raindance, for the past 9 years straight, Uplift has played for the likes of HTID, Slammin' Vinyl, Hardcore Heaven, Uproar, United Dance, Hardcore Evolution plus countless others in every corner of the UK. Furthermore, with successful tours to Australia, Canada, U.S., and Europe, Uplift has become one of the most well respected DJ/Prodcuers in the UK Hardcore scene today. Darren Hotchkiss (UK) *** 1st US Appearance ***

Darren Hotchkiss, a young up & coming DJ/Producer from Glasgow, is what some call a prodigy. The son of a DJ, you all should know of his father The Doctor, Darren was introduced to music, and started spinning of course, at a very young age. After years of honing his skillz and perfecting his craft behind closed doors, in May of 2007 Darren stepped behind the decks and took his first public stage at the tender age of 16. Since then young Hotchkiss has been accepting bookings all over Scotland at some of their biggest events, including Coloursfest, Fantazia, Fantasylands, HTID and BTTF. After only a few years of producing, in 2008 Darren seemed to hit his stride and his improvements since then have not gone unnoticed. Signed to the massive Notorious Vinyl label, and currently collaborating on tracks with Marc Smith himself, Darren is well on his way to becoming one of UK Hardcores brightest stars.

Tranzit (Toronto) *** Candyball Resident ***

Toronto's anthem king is back baby, and this time he is taking no prisoners. Finding his love for Happy Hardcore back in 1998, Tranzit downloaded a fresh mix by DJ Frisky, over a dial-up connection, and like a lot of us, he was hooked immediately. It was not very long before Tranzit had records, turntables, and was making his own mix tapes. A year or two after his 16th birthday, Tranzit's mix tapes, and hype, began to spread throughout Toronto. His quick mixing, combined with his amazing taste in tracks, gave him a unique style all his own and Tranzit quickly moved up the ranks in Toronto. Playing all across Canada and the United States, Tranzit has spent the better part of the last decade mesmerizing crowds and promoters alike. The hard-driven pulse delivered from a pounding kick drum and solid bass line fuels PKat's fervor for music. Over the past 10 years, PKat has built a name for himself one gig at a time performing all across the United States. From New York City to California, New England to Miami, including two previous Candyball appearances, PKat has established himself as an enthusiastic Kat with a knack for laying it down proper. His fierce and independent style immerses listeners in waves of hard sound, and throws dance floors into a frantic frenzy. But after years of throwing down the sickest mixes of ecclectic choons to packed crowd after packed crowd, in 2004 PKat opened the gates toward production and re-emerged as a Producer/DJ. Perpetually evolving his signature sound his fame has grown exponentially. Now five years later, PKat continues to rock the decks, challenging audiences preconceived notions of "what is hardcore", exposing them to the most authentic sounds he can find/create and surpassing expectations with each new performance.

Matching great music to a great vibe, Holidaze does deliver. Expect a nonstop onslaught of sick, nasty, Bass n' Drums with elite, epic vocals from the future and beyond. While venturing into other mediums, Holidaze continues to remain a staple in the scene by ways of performance and production. Having played for nearly a decade at some of the most renowned EDM events the East Coast has to offer, it is safe to say that Holidaze knows how to make the room go boom. Currently spending most of his time working on his upcoming label "Sour Apple", Holidaze plans on unleashing vicious new remixes, which have yet to played for the dance floors of New York City, for the Candyball massive. As a Ravers Only sponsored DJ, Holidaze has been one of the East Coast's favorite Happy Hardcore DJs for

Just 3 months after turning 18, Genki scored his first residency in Virginia's largest nightclub, The Abyss. While at The Abyss, Genki played to thousands of people every Friday and Saturday night, quickly making a name for himself in the club circuit. Despite the club's normal format of top 40, Genki was determined to bring the UK Hardcore sound to the masses. In an area previously devoid of anything resembling Hardcore, Genki played at various clubs and underground events across the country. We're back again, this time to feature a DJ who's been back every year since his debut at Anthrocon, by heavy request, DJ Ironheart!

Fandom Name: Quell Ironheart
Stage Name: DJ Ironheart
Age: 26
Influences: Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Skinny Puppy, VNV Nation, and Combichrist...along with my own warped imagination.
Genres Played: Industrial, Darkwave, Aggrotech, IDM, Breakcore

Biography:

I've been working with electronic music in one way or another since high-school, but I got my start DJing under a few different names during a short-lived stint in college. When I came home I went through a period of personal troubles and put music on the back burner for several years. That ended after my first Anthrocon about a year after I first discovered the furry fandom. Experiencing the DJs my first night there reminded me why I loved working with audio and when I came home I set back to work. This will be my third time returning as a DJ for Anthrocon and that love is just as strong today if not stronger.

I tend to ride a bit on the experimantal side of things with my own musical projects, though I've bounced between genres several times over the years. Honestly, I don't care for being nailed to one particular pigeonhole. As of this writing I'm working on an EBM album, a follow-up to the experimental/dark ambient 1nferi0r project, and an ambitious and very dark industrial project with a close friend of mine.

All this aside, I'm always glad to return to standing behind the decks and even more delighted to return to the place that reminded me what my calling was in the first place. So...may the beats flow, the people move, and the music never stop.

I look forward to seeing you all at AC!

This time around we're going to look at one of our most talented DJs, hailing from the next generation of spindoctors, Draconum!

Biography:

Draconum has dabbled in music for many years, but officially started getting into the world of live DJ sets in the summer of 2007, when he played at Anthrocon 2007, his very first convention. Since that time, he's played many other conventions, including Midwest FurFest, Furry Weekend Atlanta, and Furry Connect North, as well as a number of anime conventions in the Midwest.

His current style of choice hovers somewhere in the space between progressive, electro, and tech house, with the occasional bit of breaks thrown in for good measure. His selections range from pulsing, techy bangers to sweeping progressive tracks, and of course, heavy electro anthems. Some favorite artists of his include Wolfgang Gartner, Olivier Giacomotto, Dinka and Uppermost.

Drac is also a producer, having been in the music production and composition field since roughly 2002. He has produced many tracks in that time, but his greatest production success thus far has been the release of his track, Rising Tide, on FeralCode Records in April of 2009. The track is available on most DJ-oriented download stores (including Beatport, Juno, and others). He also has a self-released single, Grounded, available on various music outlets.

We're back again! Some might say this post is late, but they just don't appreciate anticipation! This time around we'll be featuring that Big Blue Fox from across the pond!

Biography:

Music has always been my biggest passion, and it's still my only drug, the thing that keeps me going when nothing else works anymore. My early influences were international pop stars, and as I grew up, they quickly focussed on bands such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Depeche Mode, and later on upcoming, new styles such as House, Sampling, Acid House, Techno and even HipHop. Inspired by European DJ legends such as Toni Peret and Jose Maria Castells, a Spanish DJ duo, Dutch legend Ben Liebrand and others, I began playing with music and creating mixes in the late 1980s by the use of a tape recorder and cheap turntables, the only thing I could afford back then. The results are hidden in my archives, never to be seen again.

My first job bought me real turntables, the classic SL 1210 by Technics, and I learned spinning vinyl, scratching, and other fun stuff. I started to buy and collect 12"es which as of now have summed up to more than 7.000! I started playing music at birthdays and smaller parties and in the mid nineties, I entered the professional DJ scene more by accident as a club I used to go to was in need of light jockeys, and I used this as short cut to get to know DJs there who'd eventually let me spin. This turned into a brief but fun and successful DJ career, until I decided that doing this as a regular job conflicts with my normal job too much.

Nowadays, I'm spinning for up to 8 hours in one go at Eurofurence and MMC (a smaller German convention) as "resident DJ", and I'm a regular in many other conventions and events such as Confuzzled, Cologne Furdance, Further Confusion and several smaller furry events. My style is rather flexible, ranging from 1980s Pop and Wave to Fursuit Cheese, Eurodance, House, Techno, Jumpstyle, Bounce and Hardstyle. For longer dances, I try to create an interesting combination of all those styles, starting with slower, bouncy mainstream music and then eventually ending with harder styles such as Acid, Breakbeats, Classic Rave or Hardstyle. However, for short gigs such as the FC and AC dances, I usually go with a combination of Eurodance, Hands-Up and Trance, as these styles combine danceable rhythms with nice melodies.

DJ Idols: Z-Trip

Jeff Mills is awesome. Another one of my DJ idols is Z-Trip. This man can rock a crowd like no other, while keeping a sense of humor. Here's him doing a set with 45s. O.o

This kind of high speed mixing I really respect. It's taking snippets of a bunch of often familiar songs and building something new. And z-trip makes it feel like you're sitting in his basement shooting the shit with him and he's putting on various records at random, and awesomeness happens. He makes it seem so effortless.

Jeff Mills was one of the guys who basically invented Detroit techno in the late 80s and early 90s.

I am excited about seeing him perform in NYC on Saturday night!! He is awesome. Just check out this mixing and learn. Look at that light touch on the controls. Look how he drops in effects and light scratching and uses three decks at the same time to build new tracks. God he's awesome. It's like watching an expert pianist.
