Digtagrade legs, needing advice and red-lining [Mar. 12th, 2008|10:10 pm]

[music |Beach Boys - Barbara Ann]

Well folks: Here it is. I've been studying several artists that I admire; [info]chris_sawyer, [info]doc_moreau, [info]dark_natasha, [info]saribou, and [info]hbruton on how to draw digitagrade legs. I think I'm starting to get it now, but I wanted your opinion first.

These 3 pictures are my latest attempts:

Picture #1
Picture #2
Picture #3

So can you give me any advice, and red-lining? These are copies of various works of [info]chris_sawyer's but none are tracings.

My technique is the realistic, and plausible way that some (like the ones I mentioned above) use, to draw my anthros.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Most awesome pose reference site! [Dec. 11th, 2007|03:20 pm]

warsawkook
I ganked this link from [info]art_skill_trade the other day. You can pick from one of hundreds of poses, and then rotate around the model! Too cool! (And definitely a help for the poor folks like me who totally fudge up the anatomy when they try drawing different poses, heh -_- )

Magpie - sketchwork [Jul. 20th, 2007|01:09 am]
gothwings
Time taken: 1 hour 35 minutes
Canvas size: 11.75" x 16.5" (420 mm x 297mm)
Materials used: 2H pencil and Bristol Board.

http://www.stoneorchid.co.uk/artonline/images/sketchbook/magpie02.jpg

I discovered my direction with the previous sketch. To relax, I'm picking at this piece since I can't devote the time and concentration required to commissioned pieces and it's been a long while since I drew something purely for myself.

I found and am using a photograph from Deviant Art: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36712385/ as reference for this picture.

It is intended to be finished in acrylic paint.

Just thought I'd share this with the group. Be sure to check out the gallery the reference picture is in too, there's some pretty challenging poses in there.

Hosting for some animations for folks to comment on. [Jul. 12th, 2007|09:54 pm]

'Ello Again!

I'm searching for some advice, and I hope someone here will have some ideas.

OK, some time ago I started working on a project I called PGAMNB.. or PhantomGraphs Articulated Male Naughty Bits. Basically the project is to make a model of a males sexual anatomy so that folks can use it in Daz or poser. That's a pose-able model, and If your wondering the post is here => http://community.livejournal.com/furryanatomy101/1870.html

Long story short, I posted a few prototypes to the group here and I had some wounderfull responses, but I realized that wings 3D just can't cut it to make it look right, so I started learning Blender to 'do it right'. That was six months ago and I'm making progress and I have some more to show, but this time I've gotten to the point that I've animated the naughty bits, and now I need a place to host it and show you all so I can get some of your comments.

I have been using photobucket for my stills, but for about a month I've been unable to even log into it so I'm just giving up with that service, and to be frank, I would like something that is more 'furry' oriented. I have an account on Furtopia, which will host the files, but I've yet to receive a response from the admin staff there if I can simply embed the image from their server in a post somewhere else.

The files I create for web release are MP4, for anyone who wishes to know.

Feel free to send me a personal e-mail if you don't want to respond to the list.. phantomgraph@gmail.com

Thanks all! }:8>

Reference help [May. 27th, 2007|01:02 am]
gothwings
I'm working on a new small portfolio, and while this character http://www.furaffinity.net/view/567749/ isn't anthro, some of the others may be.

I need some help in the form of photographic reference. The picture shown is the rough sketch, quickly scribbled to get the idea from head to paper.

If you are, or know someone who is this or similar build, please could you provide me with a photograph in the same pose? It would help no end so I can get the muscles and lighting correct.

Thank you for looking and hopefully helping!

Poses [May. 15th, 2007|04:19 pm]
gothwings
STOP PRESS: I found this link to more pictures of/by this guy that anyone can view: http://www.photosight.ru/ownpage.php?authorid=123426 There's some amazing stuff in there.

I'm always looking for unusual and inspiring poses for artwork and then found this on Fur Affinity: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/russiantiger/

Some of the photos in this guy's gallery and the stuff he can do with his body is amazing. A fantastic source of reference for those difficult-to-imagine action pictures!

P.S. unfortunately, I think you have to be a user to view the gallery.

Things I am Learning [Apr. 29th, 2007|11:29 pm]

graveyardgreg
First, I love using reference materials. be it from other pieces of work, anatomy books, whatever it takes to get me a-learnin'!

Secondly, I hate drawing objects like barbells. Hate hate hate.

Thirdly, I'm learning I can draw cook expressions if I try.

There is no fourth, but there is a pic. It's safe for work.

Ciao!

Female reference stock [Apr. 15th, 2007|08:50 pm]

aelius24
For those looking for more reference photos for anatomy and/or poses, I happened to find this site a few years back. It's female only, but the pics are professional-quality and non-smutty. Even though the majority is through pay-only means, there are a number of free pics that are added frequently (the Daily Beauties section and the weekly newsletters always have new images for free, added at steady intervals). If you're looking for different poses and body types for female pics, it's great. NOTICE: they are all NUDE photos, so be careful when you click if you're at work.

Progress is Good [Apr. 8th, 2007|02:28 pm]

When it comes to drawing heads, I'm always drawing them, refining them, and when I look back on my progress, all I can say is: Wow.

Meet Robey, version 1.0

Go on, look!

And now, after some time (and four versions), here's Robey, version 5.2

Go on! Look!

Practice makes perfect. I've still got many miles to go, though.

Howdy! [Mar. 23rd, 2007|08:11 pm]

[mood | amused]

Graveyard Greg here. I found this community from a friend. I just started learning the skill of drawing around two months ago, and I'm totally hooked on sketching. It's like phonics, only prettier after you practice a ton.

I've learned two major important things so far. One is practice does indeed make perfect. I'm sketching at work at least two hours minimum, drawing heads of characters, maybe upper bodies. And secondly after seeing all the books Christopher Hart has written, I realize he's a hack. I don't own a single book by him, nor do I intend to purchase any.

Anyway, hi!

first post and a sketch [Mar. 20th, 2007|10:57 pm]

rahnliki_corgi
Hello everyone, I'm new to the community and still pretty new to the furry fandom too. I've always enjoyed drawing and figured this would be a great place to improve on my skills.

It's a pleasure to meet you all. :)

So I found a little time to draw and wanted to draw a big beefy lion, so here he is:

Hunk O' Lion )

It's not finished of course and I doubt it ever will be due to lack of time, but I'd love some comments/critiques on structure and anatomy.

Thanks!

Over on Fur Affinity I noticed this journal entry and, having spoken to Jace, got permission to repost it here since Jace doesn't have - nor intends to obtain - a Live Journal account.

He put rather succinctly six points that we all should consider as we learn and strive to improve at our art.

Grid Guides [Feb. 14th, 2007|08:31 pm]

I did a picture recently using a technique I learned back at school in the 1990s, thought I'd share it with you. The artwork has artistic nudity, so NSFW.: http://www.stoneorchid.co.uk/artonline/drawing/gridguide.htm

I can't believe how long I've been raving about this fellow without thinking to link his gallery here.

http://justmeina.deviantart.com/

Check him out. It's page after page after page of fantastic male nude references. He's artistically incredibly beautiful, creative with his poses, and amazingly prolific. While he asks that you show him what you do with his work, he doesn't require credit. He does, however, ask that his references not be used for smut - which is fine by me, because I'm just trying to figure out how the hell to draw bipeds. In addition, he takes requests and fills them fairly quick! So if you're having trouble getting something down, feel free to ask him if he can do something for ya!

References for poses? [Jan. 31st, 2007|07:40 pm]

mewmew
[mood | curious]

Sorry if this isn't allowed, but I didn't see anything in the rules against questions. ^_^

Does anybody here know any good reference books/websites with LOTS of different poses by both male and female? Can be nude or not, doesn't matter. I looked through the website in the community's info, but it's almost nothing but people with really huge muscles, and that's just something I can't bring myself to look at much. Icky. If they're sketches and not photos, that might help me a bit better, but I won't get too picky on that one. ^_^

I need something to help me do more than the basic standing pose I tend to do, or at least do variations on it that don't involve a character's hands dissapearing completely behind their back. I wanted to do one with a new character, where her arms were behind her back, but you could see parts of her hands, palms up and fingers curled slightly to the sky. But, I had nothing to look at and couldn't get it right, so I just hid her hands behind her back like I do everyone else. :p

I can post links to some of my stuff to show what my basic pose looks like, or to show what my basic skill level is. Or, you can go scan around my fur affinity account here: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/mewmew/ Small warning, I do have one image that's an anatomically correct nude *so to speak*, so you may see that if you have an account there. But, I set it as a mature image.

Fabien revisited [Jan. 17th, 2007|05:48 am]
gothwings
Okay, you all saw the previous sketch of Fabien, gave me some pointers and I've had a go at making some refinements, mainly to his legs. I'm still not happy with the rear legs but can't see exactly where I'm going wrong. Have used some photos of draft horses as reference.

Moderately worksafe nude centaur (no naughty bits)

Figures in space [Jan. 14th, 2007|08:38 am]
chrissawyer
No, not outer space. But how your figures look in your composition.

This was a reply to a friend, and I wanted to share it, because it's a subtle thing that can easily be missed.

"what might help your anatomy is to show the muscles that are supporting the body as more taught than the ones at rest.

This is a subtle thing, but the eye picks up on it, and it will help.

Have your BF assume different poses, and note how the muscles that are stressed in certain poses, and try and show those muscles when you draw those poses.

It is a subtle, but very important thing. Otherwise, your poses might look too static."

So again, if you can show muscle tension for a given pose, you have a figure that looks like it has weight. And that is a big step towards realism.

Draft Horse Tutorial [Jan. 11th, 2007|05:22 pm]

This is really good, very useful.

I'm not a fan of Deviant Art but when this popped up on my Googling trip I had to share it with you all. Thank you to Fire-n-Ash for providing this resource to us all http://www.deviantart.com/view/20865011/ (worksafe).

That girl is so cute, and sexy. Awesome. :)

There's some great reference pics in this guy's gallery.
